Rafael: Roma Test Will Help Us

Rafael says the players' fitness during Tour 2014, presented by Aon, will be aided by playing in Denver when Manchester United take on AS Roma.
The 26 July fixture forms part of the International Champions Cup and will be played at Sports Authority Field which stands at 5,280 feet above sea level.

Rafael has played at a similar altitude before and says it's definitely a challenging experience.

Speaking to ManUtd.com before the end of the season, the Brazilian said: "It’s so, so hard! When people watch on TV they must think ‘ah it’s okay, it’s not difficult,’ but I tell you it’s hard. You can’t breathe properly.

"It will definitely really help us with our fitness. Just look at Antonio [Valencia]. From playing in Quito [Ecuador's capital], you can see how much energy he has on the pitch and all the running he does – that’s how it helps. So playing at high altitude in Denver will be good for us."

While Rafael unfortunately missed out on selection for the World Cup in his native Brazil, it means he can focus fully on being ready for the new era at Old Trafford, beginning with next month's trip to the United States. The first few fixtures under incoming manager Louis van Gaal will also include meetings with European Cup holders Real Madrid and the Champions League winners of 2010, Inter Milan.

"It will be fantastic to play against such historic teams during our tour. Everyone will want to play in those matches," added Rafael, who'll turn 24 shortly before the trip.

"Pre-season is so important. It means everything to your season – if it goes well and you have a good pre-season it can mean you are set up for the rest of the season with your fitness.

"It’s always good to have everyone together and to train hard and enjoy the trip as well. We always look forward to going to the States."
