Van Gaal Reflects On Busy Period

Louis van Gaal is satisfied with how Manchester United handled the busy festive period as the players now have a full week to prepare for the visit of Southampton to Old Trafford next Sunday.

The Reds may have been held at Tottenham and Stoke City but actually cut the gap at the top of the Barclays Premier League to nine points with Chelsea and Manchester City level at the summit.

"I'm happy we survived the festive period," van Gaal told reporters. "I had a small selection and couldn't change much. In spite of that, we have made up ground on Chelsea and have reached the fourth round of the FA Cup. What more can I ask for as a manager?"

The FA Cup is clearly a competition the boss wants to win and Ryan Giggs has told him that it is a trophy that has eluded the Reds since 2004. Ahead of the fourth-round draw on Monday at 19:35 GMT, van Gaal was keen to get his message across.

"We want to win a title," he asserted. "My fantastic assistant manager tells me United haven't won this cup in 11 years. However, the priority is the league, because nine points isn't so many, and eight is even less!"
