Carrick: Martial Made The Perfect Debut
Scoring against Liverpool was the perfect way for Anthony Martial to introduce himself to Manchester United supporters, according to the club's evergreen midfielder Michael Carrick.
The French deadline-day signing from Monaco was named on the bench against the Merseysiders at Old Trafford but was thrown into the fray midway through the second half, which led to him marking his first appearance with a mazy run and finish to score his first goal and wrap up the Reds' excellent 3-1 victory.
“It doesn't get any better than that does it? Coming in and coming on, scoring against Liverpool like that,” said Carrick. “He has done well to get in that position and I thought the finish was terrific, how he just slotted it home, he was so calm and composed. You can't ask for a better start.
“He is off the mark now,” Carrick continued. “He has announced himself and everyone has seen it on the big stage. It's a good start for him. I am sure his confidence will be sky high after that. It's a good way to settle him and if that has raised expectations then so be it, but that is part of the game.”
Carrick admits he didn’t know a great deal about Martial when the 19-year-old signed for United, but he has quickly caught up and believes the Reds' newest recruit has a bright future ahead. “I have to be totally honest, I didn't know an awful lot about him but I do now! To start like that, you can't really ask for more.”
Louis van Gaal’s men are now placed third in the Barclays Premier League with 10 points from a possible 15, a promising tally that frustratingly could have been better if the Reds hadn’t drawn at home against Newcastle United and lost at Swansea City before the recent international break.
Carrick says the players are content with a flourishing start to the season, although he knows there is room for improvement. “The two games in which we have dropped points, we were so disappointed with them. Beating Liverpool was big for a lot of reasons really, including coming off the back of the defeat at Swansea.
“You can look at it both ways - you can say it's a good start and you can say we have dropped points, which we have so we are disappointed with that really but I think Saturday has given everyone a lift again. Now we have another big one on Tuesday, against PSV Eindhoven.
“The aim is to get better. We have shown signs at the start of the season that we have improved. It's just about that consistency and winning games. That is the aim of the game. Hopefully this is a good start for us. It feels like the season has started now in many ways after the internationals."
