Rooney Seeks Ruthless Streak From United
Wayne Rooney says Manchester United must start converting chances after the Reds were held to a frustrating goalless draw by PSV Eindhoven at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
Louis van Gaal's side failed to score at home in the Champions League for the first time in nearly three years, as the visitors held on to claim a result which leaves United's hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages in the balance.
The Reds might have taken the lead after creating some decent openings in the match, particularly during the first half, leading the captain to lament a lack of cutting edge after the game.
Asked whether or not United are ruthless going forward, Rooney admitted to BT Sport: "No, we're not. I think we need to score more goals as a team. In the first half, if we get a goal it's a completely different game: we can control the game and they have to come out and attack, but it didn't happen. They then sit back and try and hit us on the break, which they've nearly done a few times. It's a learning curve for us but we can't stay on a learning curve; we have to start converting these games into victories.
"It's a game we knew we were capable of winning. I thought we played some good stuff in the first half and created some chances. I thought we were unlucky not to go into the break ahead, and in the second half we showed a lack of composure and put ourselves under pressure a few times. The second half wasn't great but in the first half we should have gone ahead, so overall a draw is a fair result. We're disappointed we didn't win this game."
United now face a trip to Wolfsburg - who sit top of Group B - at the start of next month, knowing a win would secure a spot in the next round of the competition. Rooney insists the players are still confident of progressing, despite the setback against PSV.
"It's tough - going out to Germany is always tough - but we have to believe in ourselves and have the confidence in ourselves that we can win," he added. "It's not the way we wanted it to be after tonight's game, but that's the way it is. We believe we're good enough to go out there and get the three points."
