Smalling: It's Still In Our Hands

Chris Smalling says Manchester United's game-plan for Tuesday night's Champions League clash with Wolfsburg is simple: win.

Louis van Gaal's men know victory at the Volkswagen Arena will guarantee a place in the last 16 of the competition, with a draw also good enough if PSV Eindhoven fail to beat CSKA Moscow in the other Group B game.

But Smalling has told MUTV that the Reds have no plans to rely on other results and are instead focused on winning at all costs.

"We'd like to have sown it up in the last home game but the fact is it's still in our hands and if we win the game we know we're through," he said.

"It makes it very simple for us in terms of our game-plan and how we approach the game. We're not a team that relies on someone else and luckily it's still in our hands. If we go out and do our job, we don't need to worry about what happens in the other game."

United secured a hard-fought 2-1 win over the German side at Old Trafford back in September - courtesy of Smalling's excellent winner - and the England international is expecting another closely-contested match with the side that currently sit top of Group B.

"The Bundesliga is up there as one of the three main leagues with England and Spain. Every week there are competitive games and it's going to be very difficult," insisted the 26-year-old.

"When the group first came out you looked at Wolfsburg and probably thought of them as the strongest team and away from home it was probably going to be our toughest game.

"They gave us a very good game at home. I think we started quite well but towards the end they put the pressure on and we were holding on for maybe the last 10 or 15 minutes. So we know they have a lot of quality and it'll be a very tactical and tough game."
