Should Rooney Leave Man, United?

Now that Wayne Rooney has broken Manchester United's goalscoring record, is it time for him to leave Old Trafford?

That was one of the topics debated on the Sunday Supplement as this week's panel of journalists celebrated a landmark moment in the career of England's captain.

Rooney's injury-time goal against Stoke on Saturday was his 250th in United colours, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton's record, but the Daily Mail's Football Editor, Ian Ladyman, believes the 31-year-old may seek to move on this summer after slipping down Jose Mourinho's pecking order.

He told the Sunday Supplement: "It's a slightly peculiar day to raise this, but it's interesting that he scored the goal - great goal, great landmark - as a Manchester United substitute.

"He's not just a substitute at this moment, in Mourinho's mind he is now one of his substitutes.

"Where will he be at the start of next season when Mourinho has invested more of Manchester United's money into more players?

"You can only presume he will still be on the bench at best and therefore, you begin to wonder whether it's time for Wayne to begin to have a look around again?"

Even if his future lies away from Manchester United, The Sun's Northern Football Correspondent, Neil Custis, believes the club should build a permanent monument to his achievements.

"They need to build a statue to him," he said.

"It's a 44-year-old record and if you look at his consistency of goalscoring down the years, it's incredible.

"You compare it to Sir Bobby's record and it's so much better in terms of games played. It's an incredible record and an incredible level of consistency which has only tailed off really in the last eight months.

"Unfortunately he is now being judged in a lot of quarters by what he has done recently."
