United Are Shutting Out The Top Scorers
Zlatan Ibrahmovic's point-saving penalty against Everton was his 27th goal of the season - 16 in the Premier League, one in the Emirates FA Cup, four in the EFL Cup, five in the Europa League and one in the Community Shield.
The spot-kick ensured the Manchester United striker had scored more goals in all competitions than any other Premier League player this season and was further evidence of his importance to the cause, after earlier having a header ruled out for a debatable offside decision.
However, a look at the list of the leading marksmen in the country also brings up an interesting fact. Romelu Lukaku may be the top scorer in the Premier League but he was again shut out by the Reds on Tuesday, as he was at Goodison Park in December.
And others who are hitting the net for fun this term have also failed to breach the United defence. Indeed, the next 10 forwards in the overall table (at the time of writing) have all drawn a blank against Jose Mourinho's men so far in 2016/17.
Sergio Aguero missed the league derby but featured in the EFL Cup defeat at Old Trafford, while Harry Kane has still to open his account against the Reds. Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott failed to find the net in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal, while Diego Costa's threat was snuffed out in the two matches at Stamford Bridge.
Spurs pair Dele Alli and Son Heung-min, like Kane, were on the losing side in December. Jermain Defoe, the Sunderland sharpshooter, was shut out at Old Trafford but he will, of course, be out to shatter this record in the next Premier League outing at the Stadium of Light on Sunday.
