Darmian Eyes Positive Old Trafford Send-off
Manchester United defender Matteo Darmian says the perfect send-off for Stockholm would be a victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Reds host the Eagles in the final Premier League game of the campaign ahead of Wednesday's Europa League final in the Swedish capital.
With the showpiece with Ajax at the forefront of his mind, Jose Mourinho has revealed he will give opportunities to a number of young United stars and rest some key men. Nevertheless, Darmian insists everyone is determined to end the season on a high and go into the final with some positive momentum.
"We want to win the last game of the Premier League in front of our fans because we want to make them proud and also prepare in the best way we can for the final," he told United Review. "We want to arrive there in the best condition we can and this is a good chance for us to do that.
"It will be a difficult game but Crystal Palace are now safe and they have nothing to lose so they will come here just to play and enjoy themselves. We have to be ready."
While the United players are fully preparing for Sunday's match, Darmian admits it's tough not to think about the final and the importance of it to next season's ambitions, with a Champions League place also up for grabs.
"When there is a possibility to win a trophy, it’s always a good thing. In this case, if we win then we will also get into the Champions League so, of course, it’s an extra motivation to do our best," he explained. "I also think we have to play for the injured players who cannot play.
"It would have been special for Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] to play in Stockholm, but there is not only Zlatan; also we play for Marcos Rojo, Ashley Young, Luke Shaw and all the other players who cannot play."
