Man Of The Match: Majestic Matic

Nemanja Matic was the convincing winner of our Man of the Match award on his Premier League debut for Manchester United.

The super Serb collected 74 per cent of the Twitter vote to finish well clear of his fellow MUTV nominees Romelu Lukaku (17%) and Paul Pogba (9%).

The Opta stats back up the belief that the midfielder was a worthy star man as West Ham United were swept aside 4-0 at Old Trafford. He made more passes (69) and covered more distance (11.41 km) than anybody else on the pitch. His figures for possession gained (9), duels (19) and touches (89) also outscored his team-mates.

"I thought he was a player with special qualities and, since I left, I always thought he could be a perfect player for us," said Jose Mourinho. "He is a player that our team needs with his kind of qualities. Nemanja and Michael Carrick who, in spite of his age has a role to play, I am happy with these players that I call stability players."

Two-goal Lukaku, who finished second in our poll, agreed with the outcome, telling MUTV: "Matic is a top-class player, we needed a player like him and the game that he played today was a Man-of-the-Match performance.

"Offensively and defensively, he was there, making us tick. He gave midfielders the licence to go forward and the licence for Micki [Henrikh Mkhitaryan] to go forward, which was really good for us offensive players to have those type of players playing close to you.

"Everybody’s delighted and next week is another challenge and we will have to be ready for that. He was the best player on the pitch, you have to be honest, and he will be really important for us in the future."
