Special recognition award for Carrick
Michael Carrick has collected a special recognition award at Manchester United's Player of the Year dinner.
The captain is set to retire at the end of the season after a distinguished playing career but he is remaining with the club after accepting a post on Jose Mourinho's coaching team.
The boss handed over some special gifts, including a whistle and headache tablets, in a touching moment.
"I didn't expect that tonight, to be honest, I'm not really an emotional person but for boss to say these kind of words and to reflect on the last years is beyond my wildest dreams when I first came here 12 years ago," said Carrick.
"It’s the sacrifices you make to try to be as good as you can. I’ve always tried to give my best. I've had an unbelievable time here but I'm looking forward to the future. Hopefully, I've got one more game to play but I'm thankful for everything. I'm quite happy with the ending. I'm calm about it.
"To the fans, I’ve turned into one of you now. I support this club home and away now. We’ve got a great spirit we need to get keep that and need to stick together."
The manager spoke passionately about the respect he has for the club captain.
"I have to admit that one of the most difficult things in my 18 years as a manager is, when a big player is leaving, it is always very sad," said Jose. "So this time we try to do it in a way where I am not sad. A big player is leaving but a big man is staying.
"There is a space for him and we will welcome him with open arms but, before that, we still want Michael to play and then the next day give his boots to his kids."
