Williams: We did our job at the back
Brandon Williams believes Manchester United’s defensive resilience helped us edge out Wolves to progress to the fourth round of the Emirates FA Cup.
The Reds won 1-0 to secure consecutive clean sheets for the first time since September and the 19-year-old believes the victory, courtesy of Juan Mata’s 67th-minute chip, was built from the back.
"“As long as we don't concede, we know we're going to score,”" Williams told MUTV after the final whistle.
"“If we do our job at the back and the full team puts the shift in, I'm sure we'll get the win like we did.”"
United finally managed to beat Nuno Espirito Santo’s side at the sixth attempt since their promotion in 2018, after three draws and two defeats in five previous meetings.
The youngster was complimentary when asked about the visitors but said he felt confident in defending against the threat of their dangerous wingers, Adama Traore and Pedro Neto.
"“They're a good, organised team,”" Williams added. "“They do well at what they do, but we managed to come through with a win and we're through to the next round."
"“Last game, [Traore] started on my side but I knew I was going to be playing against one of them. Neto came on my side and it's fine, I'll come up against whoever.”"
An away tie at Tranmere Rovers or Watford awaits in the fourth round, with that replay going ahead at Prenton Park next Thursday.
Williams is confident in our ability to progress no matter who we come up against, although attention will now turn immediately to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
"“It's a good competition to be in, we'll try to go as far as we can and I'm sure we can win the competition."
"“[It’s] another tricky fixture but we’ve got games coming up that are more important at the minute. When it comes up, we'll try to win that.”"
