GROUP CHAT: BRUNO IS OUR PLAYER OF THE MONTH!
A cast of former Reds believe that Bruno Fernandes deserves to win Manchester United's final Player-of-the-Month award for 2019/20.
The Portuguese playmaker is nominated along with Fred and Anthony Martial for the accolade, which is decided by a fan vote in our Official App.
At the time of writing, Fernandes leads Martial by a hair's breadth, but Wes Brown, David May, Ben Thornley and Danny Webber believe our January signing merits the prize.
“It's a toss up for me between Martial and Fernandes,” said Thornley, “but I think when you look at the two penalties that he scored, I think I'll go with him. Because they're all pressure penalties, and you're relying on him. I would probably just, just, pick Bruno Fernandes over Martial.”
Danny Webber agreed, again citing Bruno's key penalties against Copenhagen and Sevilla, which took Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side to the brink of a place in the UEFA Europa League final.
“You took the words out of my mouth. I was going to bring up the penalties as well. Cool head, big situations, stepped up when it mattered, so it's got to be Bruno for me.”
Treble winner David May said that he felt the choice between all three players was tough, but that Fernandes's general impact since arriving from Sporting Lisbon was a factor in his thinking.
“Three pressure penalties [including the one against Leicester], and I would just give it him because he is a top, top player, and because he's transformed our season,” assessed May. “So, yeah, finish him off with the Player-of-the-Month [award].”
Fernandes has won three of the four available Player-of-the-Month awards since he arrived (February, March and June), but lost out to Mason Greenwood in July.
Martial, meanwhile, finished second in last month's vote, but is yet to win the trophy during 2019/20, despite a stellar campaign in which he finished as the Reds' top scorer with a career-best 23 goals.
Two-time Champions League winner Wes Brown was keen to give praise to midfielder Fred – who won his first Player-of-the-Month gong in January – for his performance against Sevilla, but admitted he couldn't look past the Portuguese.
“I'm the same,” admitted Wes. “I thought Fred played excellently in that last game. He was perfect, broke up all the play, got stuck in, looked very sharp. But Bruno is the guy at the moment, and he's the guy that stands out for us.”
