Moyes: We Should Have Won

David Moyes believes Manchester United missed a chance to take all three points against Real Sociedad on Tuesday, but insists his side remain in a strong position to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages.

The Reds squandered several second-half chances to secure a win at the Anoeta Stadium – including a penalty from substitute Robin van Persie – and had to settle for a point in Spain.

The result means United remain one point clear of Bayer Leverkusen going into the final two Group A fixtures, but Moyes insists it should have been more.

He told ITV: "It was a game we should have won: the points were there for the taking, and we could have put ourselves in a really strong position. We haven’t done that, but we are capable of doing it in the other games. We’re top of the group, but we should have taken three points.

"We had enough chances to win it, especially in the second half. We controlled most of the game, apart from one or two moments, and I thought we were the team that was on top.

"Football will tell you that you need to take your chances and opportunities when they come along. We missed a big opportunity tonight, but we’re still in a strong position."

The Reds boss also felt the game suffered from "strange" refereeing decisions, after Marouane Fellaini received a second yellow card from referee Nicola Rizzoli late on.

"I think it [Fellaini’s dismissal] was a 'totting up', at the end of the day. It was harsh, because he played well," Moyes added.

"I thought there were a few strange decisions all night. Throughout the night, there were a few things that I found hard – the crowd whistled for a lot of things."
