Rooney Is Captain Material

Manchester United manager David Moyes believes Wayne Rooney could be a future captain of the club.

The striker has worn the armband on occasions over the years and skippered the team in consecutive fixtures this season against Liverpool in the Capital One Cup and West Brom in the Barclays Premier League.

Nemanja Vidic is the club captain with Patrice Evra his deputy but there are a number of big personalities at Old Trafford who are capable of leading by example. "I think Wayne has always had the ability to be a captain," explained Moyes. "He’s got that love of football as the biggest thing because he loves the game and loves the ball and kicking it around. He’s a natural and, in his own way, leads by example in what he tries to do. In future years, he could be the skipper here.

"I don’t see any reason to change it [the captaincy]. I’m happy as they work very well and I see Vida, Evra, Rio [Ferdinand] – all the experienced boys – are great behind the scenes. All, in their own right, are really good captains. Vida wears the armband but I use them all for their guidance and experience."

The boss was also asked if Rooney and Robin van Persie form the best strike partnership in the league with Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge currently proving a lethal combination for Liverpool.

"I think Wayne and Robin on their day will be a match for anything anywhere in the world," he responded. "Not just in this country. When they are firing, I think they are the best. I really do. They are both incredibly talented, natural goalscorers."
