United To Visit Accrington Or Yeovil In FA Cup
Manchester United will begin Louis van Gaal's opening FA Cup campaign with a third-round trip to either Accrington Stanley or Yeovil Town.
The identity of the Reds’ first opponents in this year’s competition will be confirmed when a second-round replay between League One’s Yeovil and League Two’s Accrington is concluded at Huish Park on Tuesday 16 December.
Amidst a busy winter period, United's bid to be crowned the winners of football’s oldest cup competition will begin on the weekend of 3/4 January 2015.
Meetings with Accrington stretch back to the Reds’ Newton Heath days, when two Division One matches in the 19th century, in the 1892/93 season, resulted in a pair of draws. United then subjected Stanley to a 7-0 rout in 1902, and a post-war 2-2 draw forced an FA Cup third-round replay for the sides, with the Reds eventually emerging victorious in a 5-1 success at Maine Road in 1946.
Matches against Yeovil come in even shorter supply, and United have cruised to comfortable wins on both occasions, which came in the FA Cup. The Reds eliminated the Glovers from the third round 3-0 in 1938, before sending the side back down south 11 years later with an 8-0 drubbing.
