Young: Draw With Arsenal Is Hard To Take
Ashley Young was disappointed following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal but insists the Reds’ performance was full of positives and says Manchester United will aim to win the Barclays Premier League next season.
"We should have taken all three points," Young told MUTV. "We were disappointed to let them back in the game but we played well.
“It was all us – they came into it in the last 25 minutes. But we’re disappointed we let them back into the game, especially when you consider how we controlled it.”
Young was arguably the Reds’ star performer against the Gunners, setting up Ander Herrera’s opening goal and causing all manner of problems for right-back Hector Bellerin.
“We wanted to put them under pressure and we did that from the word go,” Young said. “We were looking to get in behind them and create chances. We felt comfortable and we’re disappointed [they scored].”
Arsenal’s equaliser – an own goal – came late in the game and was aided by an unfortunate deflection off substitute Tyler Blackett.
“I think that’s the third deflection we’ve conceded from in the last three games if you include West Brom and Crystal Palace," reflected Young. "It [just] wasn’t meant to be [for us] today.”
Despite the late disappointment, Young was buoyed by the team’s performance and believes all the ingredients are in place for United to flourish next term. It looks likely the Reds will finish this campaign in fourth spot, unless Arsenal, who have two games still to play, lose both fixtures.
"As a club, we always want to finish as high as possible,” he said. “It looks like we'll finish fourth and we have to go into the last game and get the three points.
“Then we’ll dust ourselves down in the summer and come back again. We want to bring Champions League nights back to Old Trafford – they’re fantastic.
"We’ll come back stronger next year and we'll look to win the league.”
