Gary Neville Urges Manchester United To Resolve Striker And Goalkeeper Situation

Gary Neville has urged Manchester United to resolve problems at "both ends of the pitch" before the end of transfer deadline day.

Louis van Gaal's side squandered a lead to slip up 2-1 at Swansea on Super Sunday – the third time in succession they have suffered defeat to the south Wales side.

A Bafetimbi Gomis winner that squirmed under Sergio Romero – the future of No 1 David de Gea still unresolved – and the stuttering form of Wayne Rooney have raised further questioned about the shape of Van Gaal's squad with Tuesday's deadline approaching.

And while Neville predicted no knee-jerk reactions from the Old Trafford hierarchy, he insisted the defeat must sharpen their focus to strengthen between the goalposts and in attack.

"They won't just wake up and think, 'Oh, we've lost a game, we're going to panic and sign four players' – they've probably always wanted to bring in players – but watching them, they need players," Neville said from the Sky Sports studio at the Liberty Stadium.

"They need to sort the goalkeeping situation out. That is a big problem. If De Gea leaves and they don't get another goalkeeper in...

"Manchester United have had incredible experience over the last 25 years. They've had Van der Sar, Schmeichel and, when they've not been able to fix that position down, it's caused problems.

"Centre-forward, goalkeeper – both ends of the pitch.

"If [Javier] Hernandez leaves, they've got one striker. I'm not classing Fellaini as a striker. They've got one striker in Wayne Rooney.

"They've got the goalkeeper Romero and I said before the game the jury's out; I think today it's even more out.

"From Manchester United's point of view, they have to resolve the centre-forward and the goalkeeper [situation] in the next two days.

"Hopefully it means they keep De Gea and they sign a striker.

"I would have said, having let Jonny Evans go, a centre-back as well but to do three pieces of business in the next 48 hours I think will be nigh-on impossible.

"But I'd be absolutely staggered if there wasn't a striker brought in. It has to happen."
