Van Gaal's Left Side Concern

Louis van Gaal admits he has concerns over a lack of left-sided players in his Manchester United defence.

While winger Ashley Young filled in admirably at left-back – a position he occupied at times during last season – during the Reds’ 3-0 elimination of Ipswich Town in the Capital One Cup third round, the boss says the hamstring injury suffered by Marcos Rojo at Southampton has created an issue for him.

With Luke Shaw absent for the long term due to a double leg fracture and Tyler Blackett on loan at Celtic, Daley Blind is the only natural left-sided defender available to the boss.

“He is injured,” van Gaal reiterated when asked about Rojo after the Ipswich match.

“You saw I changed every player [in the team] except a left-footed player. Only Blind now has played all the minutes. Left-footed players, Rojo and Shaw, are injured so I have a problem.”
