Smalling: We Can Still Qualify

Chris Smalling insists Manchester United can still qualify from a tight Champions League group when the Reds head to Wolfsburg in a fortnight’s time.

The defender was speaking after Wednesday's 0-0 draw with PSV Eindhoven, the first such scoreline in the competition at Old Trafford for five years.

Although Smalling put in another assured performance alongside Daley Blind at the heart of the Reds’ defence, he could only look on as chances were disappointingly spurned at the other end of the pitch to set up a crunch match in Germany on 8 December.

When asked if United can win in Wolfsburg, Smalling told BT Sport: "I think we can. Ever since the first result against PSV, we’ve turned things round [in the group].

"We can go there with hope because we’ve beaten Wolfsburg already, here at Old Trafford. But coming into the Champions League games, we saw it as probably the toughest one so we’ve given ourselves a lot of hard work to do."

Reflecting on the frustrating draw with PSV, Smalling offered his verdict on what his team could have done better: "I think we needed to move the ball a little bit quicker and just take our chances really. If we’d have got the first goal it would have made things a lot easier, but we can only be disappointed in ourselves."
