Manchester United's Doubles Over Liverpool

Wayne Rooney may have only scored two goals for Manchester United at Anfield but both, in 2004/05 and 2015/16, have completed league doubles over Liverpool.

It is only the 13th time United have achieved the feat of winning both the home and away fixtures against the arch rivals from Merseyside in the same season, with eight of these perfect pairs coming in the Premier League era - all of which you can see in the video above.

Sir Alex Ferguson was responsible for six of those doubles but Louis van Gaal has already pulled off two in a row since taking over as United manager, after masterminding Sunday's 1-0 victory at Anfield to follow up the 3-1 triumph at Old Trafford and winning both meetings in his maiden campaign.

Van Gaal has, in fact, a 100 per cent record against Liverpool with four wins out of four games becoming five from five if you include the International Champions Cup final on his first pre-season tour.

It is all a far cry from a barren spell in the 1970s and 1980s when United were unable to gain maximum points in both fixtures throughout those decades. Going further back, George Wall was the club's hero in the only pre-war doubles over Liverpool - he scored in all four meetings across 1912/13 and 1913/14.
