United's 8 Cup Wins Over City

Ahead of Wednesday's EFL Cup encounter at Old Trafford, we're looking back at Manchester United's eight previous wins over Manchester City in knockout competitions...

FA Cup, 3 October 1891, North Road
Newton Heath 5 Ardwick 1 (Farman 2, Sneddon, Doughty, Edge; Pearson)
This month marked the 125th anniversary of what some claim to be the first ever Manchester derby. Back then the clubs were still a few years away from becoming United and City, but the opening shots of this local rivalry were fired at the Heathens’ home ground North Road in front of 11,000 fans.

FA Cup, 24 January 1970, Old Trafford
United 3 City 0 (Morgan, Kidd 2)
City won the next two Manchester derbies in the FA Cup following that 1891 meeting, in the 1926 semi-final and the 1955 fourth round, but the Reds exacted revenge in the first derby of the 1970s, as Willie Morgan converted a penalty on the stroke of half-time and local lad Brian Kidd added a quickfire double.

League Cup, 9 October 1974, Old Trafford
United 1 City 0 (Daly pen)
With the Reds dropping down to Division Two for one season, the Manchester derby was put on hold for one year… or so it seemed, until the clubs were matched in the third round of the League Cup in October 1974. And United's progress to the next round was sealed by a late Gerry Daly penalty.

FA Cup, 10 January 1987, Old Trafford
United 1 City 0 (Whiteside)
How apt that Alex Ferguson’s first FA Cup tie in charge of United would hand him his first taste of the Manchester derby in front of his new fans. And it was cup expert Norman Whiteside who landed the knockout punch, pouncing on a loose ball to smash home from the tightest of angles at the Stretford End.

FA Cup, 18 Feburary 1996, Old Trafford
United 2 City 1 (Cantona, Sharpe; Rosler)
The Reds ended the 1995/96 season as league champions and City were relegated to Division Two by goal difference on a catastrophic final day of the campaign. United had already rubbed salted into the Blues’ gaping wounds with a fifth-round win in the FA Cup, recovering from an early opener by Uwe Rosler to win 2-1 thanks to Eric Cantona and matchwinner Lee Sharpe, en route to a famous Double Double.

FA Cup, 14 February 2004, Old Trafford
United 4 City 2 (Scholes, van Nistelrooy 2, Ronaldo; Tarnat, Fowler)
This Valentine’s Day massacre had it all – six goals, a red card for Gary Neville after a skirmish with Steve
McManaman and, ultimately, another derby win on the way to the Reds lifting the FA Cup. Paul Scholes, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo put United in control, before a late flurry of goals saw the game end 4-2 in one of the most enjoyable derbies in recent years.

League Cup, 27 January 2010, Old Trafford
United 3 City 1 (Scholes, Carrick, Rooney; Tevez)
This semi-final clash was another belter. After freshly-defected Carlos Tevez had given City a 2-1 first-leg lead with a double at Eastlands, the Reds took control of the tie with goals from Scholes and Michael Carrick, but with 15 minutes remaining Tevez struck once more to even the score again. Extra time was approaching when Wayne Rooney joyously bagged the winner to spark injury-time scenes of bedlam.

FA Cup, 8 January 2012, Etihad Stadium
City 2 United 3 (Kolarov, Aguero; Rooney 2, Welbeck)
The name on everyone’s lips pre-match was Paul Scholes, the legend coming out of retirement to the surprise of absolutely everyone. United raced into a 3-0 lead in the first half of this breathless third-round tie, in no small part down to Vincent Kompany’s early dismissal. Aleksandar Kolarov pulled one back, prompting Sir Alex to hand Scholesy his second debut, 18 years after his first. Sergio Aguero made it 2-3 but Scholes’ calm head helped the Reds take control again and see out a remarkable victory.
