Van Persie Thanks 'Unbelievable' United Fans

Robin van Persie praised Manchester United’s ‘unbelievable’ travelling supporters for helping to make Monday night’s 2-1 win over Southampton even more memorable.

After registering his and the Reds’ second goal when volleying in from Wayne Rooney’s free-kick, van Persie celebrated close to the United fans who had backed the team throughout the match at St Mary’s. Once the tense encounter was concluded, the Dutchman rewarded one loyal supporter in that same section of the ground by handing them his match shirt.

With United now elevated to third place in front of a raucous away crowd, van Persie likened the current mood to that of 2012/13 when the Reds were charging towards a twentieth Premier League title.

“They (the supporters) were unbelievable,” van Persie told MUTV. “I just want to say that it felt like the old days – like two years ago. It was a really special day, and they were unbelievable.

“I want to thank them because I know they’ve been travelling from all over England, maybe some from abroad. It’s a long journey. Thanks everyone for coming – you are absolutely amazing.

“My first away game against Southampton for United two-and-a-half years ago was a special one, but I think today was a good one as well."
