Hull Table £7m Bid For Campbell

Hull chairman Paul Duffen has tabled a bid of £7m for Manchester United striker Frazier Campbell.

The 20-year-old spent seven months on loan at Hull last season and scored 15 league goals as they gained promotion to the Premier League.

Tigers boss Phil Brown has previously stated his desire to bring Campbell back to Hull permanently.

Campbell was in Manchester United's squad against Zenit St Petersburg in the Super Cup final on Friday.

Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, while fellow striker Louis Saha is poised to move to Everton.

While Saha's exit may open an opportunity for Campbell at United, Berbatov's potential arrival could further hinder Campbell's chances of becoming a first-team regular.

Duffen told BBC Humberside: "We've put a £7m bid on the table to Manchester United.

"The complexities of their situation are that it depends on them getting one in, that one might well be Bulgarian."

"As I said all the way through the summer we need to be respectful of that and there's nothing I can do to force the situation.

"If they do bring someone in I want to be at the front of the queue and I will do whatever it takes to bring him to the football club."

"They'll be a lot of people alluding to the fact we've got carried away with ourselves. But I can absolutely guarantee that I'm here for the long term building the football club.

"And we are going to have to get braver in some of the things we do but it will never be at the cost of threatening the security and financial ability of the club long term."

Carling Cup 3rd Round Draw: Man. United To Face Boro

United will host Middlesbrough at Old Trafford in the Third Round of the Carling Cup.

The last time the sides met in the competition was at the semi-final stage in 1992. The teams played out a 0-0 draw at Ayresome Park before United won the second leg 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Elsewhere, Portsmouth will host Chelsea, Crewe Alexandra face a trip to Liverpool and Swansea meet Cardiff in an all-Welsh tie.

Knee Trouble Sidelines Owen

Owen Hargreaves was missing from Friday's UEFA Super Cup defeat after a recurrence of his knee injury, Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed.

The United manager had pencilled in the midfielder for his first start of the season in Monte Carlo, but had to withdraw him after a flare up in Thursday evening's training session.

"He said he felt his knee and that he was not fit enough to play," Sir Alex confirmed. "There is nothing you can to do about it. If a player declares himself unfit you have to accept that."

Hargreaves was dogged by tendonitis throughout his first season at Old Trafford, and the Reds' boss admits he is keen for the combative star to get his Reds career back on track.

"We'd have liked to play him and get him back into the run of things and playing football again," he said. "To be honest, he has not played enough football in the last year. He'd like to get back and it is disappointing."

Zenit Overcome Man. United To Claim Super Cup

Manchester United's bid for European Super Cup glory ended in failure as Pavel Pogrebnyak and Danny goals earned Zenit St Petersburg a deserved win.

Fresher and more incisive throughout, Zenit took the lead when Pogrebnyak forced home a header from close range.

Playmaker Danny made it 2-0 with a fine solo goal on the hour, before Nemanja Vidic pulled one back from six yards.

It was too little too late, though, with Paul Scholes sent off late on in a lacklustre showing from United.

The midfielder saw red when he punched the ball into the net with only seconds left on the clock, earning himself a second booking and one-match European suspension that could see him sit out the Champions League group match against Villarreal.

It was a sorry end to the match for United, who had looked off the pace throughout.

With Zenit midway through the Russian season, the difference in sharpness between the sides was clearly evident, and Dick Advocaat's side showed they could well be a threat in this season's Champions League - even without Andrei Arshavin, who has been heavily linked with Spurs and who only played 45 minutes in Monaco.

The defeat, though, will not be too hard to take for United, who not only had Cristiano Ronaldo watching from the stands, but who will also be hoping to add a striker - most notably Dimitar Berbatov - to their ranks before the close of the transfer window on Monday.

United's strikers, however, are yet to find the net after three matches of the new season, with Darren Fletcher scoring their only goals in both of the opening two Premier League fixtures.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson said before the match that the traditional showpiece between the Champions League winners and the Uefa Cup champions was a game to be enjoyed, but there was little for the Scot to savour from the first 45 minutes.

Zenit impressed with an attractive counter-attacking style en route to Uefa Cup glory last season and the same style had United on the back foot throughout, particularly down the Russian side's right, where Patrice Evra had a torrid time in the opening half.

Konstantin Zyryanov and Aleksandr Anyukov were a constant threat and they forged the first clear openings of the match when twice they combined to get behind the United defence, only for Pogrebnyak to spoon over when well positioned on both occasions.

Rio Ferdinand then had to be alert to deflect a Danny cross narrowly past the post, while at the other end a weak Carlos Tevez shot on 19 minutes was the best United could muster.

Ferguson's side finally showed something like their best attacking play when Tevez forced an opening down the right wing, but Wayne Rooney dallied too long on his shot and the chance came and went.

And minutes after Ivica Krizanac had forced Edwin van der Sar into an instinctive save from close range, Zenit's pressure finally told when Pogrebnyak forced the ball over the line after Igor Denisov had flicked on Dominguez's corner seconds before half-time.

As if United were not struggling already, Arshavin was introduced at the break and his trickery immediately had the English champions on the back foot.

However, it was the diminutive Russian's potential replacement - Danny - who lit up the second half, the £25m signing from Dinamo Moscow dancing through the United defence and finishing with aplomb to make it 2-0 on the hour.

Tevez, a rare bright spark for United, continued to play the workhorse role up front, though, and moments after the Argentine's industry had almost set Rooney free in the box, he drilled a fine effort over.

It sparked a spell of pressure from United that had long been overdue, and with United's game finally clicking into gear, Zenit struggled to cope.

It was no surprise, therefore, when Vidic reduced the deficit from Tevez's pull-back after good work in the box by Rooney - and it preceded a last 20 minutes that saw United pile forward and Zenit attempt to pick holes in the Reds' defence on the break.

John O'Shea and Park Ji-Sung both had good opportunities blocked in the box, while Zenit keeper Vyacheslav Malafeev did well to deny Rooney with the minutes ticking down.

However, the best chance of the latter stages fell to Zenit's Danny, the Portuguese star latching onto Arshavin's pass only to fire over with just Van der Sar to beat.

And United's misery was complete a minute before time when Scholes was dismissed for an unnecessary handball.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson:
"I think we played our best football at 2-0, unfortunately. It was a warm night and so I think my players did OK under the circumstances.

"I thought Tevez was outstanding - probably the best player on the park - and I thought we had chances to do something in the game.

"But Zenit are a very good team and have exceptional movement. They'll be a force in the Champions League playing like that."

Manchester United: Van der Sar, Neville (Brown 76), Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Anderson (O'Shea 60), Nani, Scholes, Fletcher (Park 60), Rooney, Tevez.

Zenit St Petersburg: Malafeev, Anyukov, Krizanac (Radimov 71), Puygrenier (Shirokov 62), Sirl, Denisov, Tymoschuk, Zyrianov, Dominguez (Arshavin 46), Pogrebnyak, Danny.

Scholes Faces Ban
Paul Scholes will miss Villarreal’s visit to Old Trafford on Champions League Matchday 1 after being sent off in the UEFA Super Cup on Friday night.

The 33-year-old earned his marching orders in the 89th minute when he propelled Wes Brown’s cross into the Zenit St Petersburg net with his hand.

Referee Claus Bo Larsen showed Scholes a yellow card, just as he had earlier in the match for a reckless challenge in midfield.

Article 18.01 of the UEFA Super Cup regulations state:As a rule, a player who is sent off the field of play is suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition.

Before learning of Scholes’ impending ban, Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson sympathised with the midfielder, suggesting “it was maybe an instinctive thing, it’s a bit unfortunate”.

The manager also highlighted some of the over-zealous tackling that took place during the match.

Anderson and Carlos Tevez also picked up bookings in Monaco, although these cautions do not carry forward into the UEFA Champions League.

Ronaldo Named Europe's Best

Cristiano Ronaldo has added yet more personal accolades to his already bulging collection after being named the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year at an awards ceremony in Monaco.

The winger was also named Forward of the Year and received his prize from Portuguese legend Eusebio.

Ronaldo netted an incredible 42 goals last season, including the opener in the Champions League final in Moscow which ensured he finished as the tournament's top scorer.

The 23-year-old is the second United player to win the award after David Beckham in 1999 and he was understandably delighted with his latest personal triumphs.

"I feel very proud to have won these awards," he said. "Manchester (United) had a great season and I scored many goals.

"As a winger, to be named the best forward is fantastic. It is very good for me and gives me more ambition to become better. Thanks to my team-mates and those who voted for me."

The other categories were surprisingly dominated by Chelsea.

Petr Cech beat Edwin van der Sar, Manuel Almunia, Manuel Neuer and Pepe Reina to the goalkeeper prize, while skipper John Terry saw off competition from Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Carles Puyol and Jamie Carragher to win the best defender award.

Frank Lampard picked up the midfielder accolade ahead of Paul Scholes, Michael Essien, Cesc Fabregas and Steven Gerrard.

Saha Set For Everton Switch

United have agreed terms with Everton for the sale of striker Louis Saha, subject to a medical.

An announcement on Everton's official website confirmed the Frenchman has been offered a two-year deal - with the option for a third year - and is set to sign for an undisclosed fee.

Saha's proposed switch to Goodison Park will be completed subject to a medical.

The 30-year-old has fired 42 goals in 124 appearances for the Reds, despite enduring a torrid time with injuries since joining in January 2004.

Last season's double-winning campaign was a bitter sweet one for the Frenchman. He returned from a knee injury in September 2007 to fire the winner against Sunderland and a victory-sealing spot-kick against Chelsea (in the league), but was largely unavailable at the business end of the season.

Sir Alex Ferguson admitted on Thursday that he was "less optimistic" about bolstering his squad, most probably with a new striker. But Saha's expected departure may see the Reds step up their hunt for a new front man before the transfer window closes on Monday.

Champions League 2008/09 Groupings

United face Villarreal, Celtic and Aalborg in Group E of this season's Champions League.

The European champions were last paired with Celtic two years ago, both clubs winning one match apiece in the group stage. Sir Alex's team triumphed 3-2 at OT and lost 1-0 in Glasgow, a result which saw the Hoops join United in the last 16.

United met Villarreal for the first time in 2005/06. Neither game yielded a goal and the Reds ultimately bowed out of Europe, while the Spanish side went through as group leaders with Benfica in second.

Aalborg are the unknown quantity in Group E, having never faced United before. However, the Reds have played other sides from Denmark in recent times, including Brondby and FC Copenhagen in the group stages of 1998/99 and 2006/07 respectively.

Man. United Confirm Dong Exit

Dong Fangzhuo's United contract has been cancelled by mutual consent.

The 23-year-old striker became the first ever Chinese player at Old Trafford when he joined from hometown club Dalian Shide in January 2004. He initially spent two years on loan at Royal Antwerp until he was eligible to play in England, and scored 35 goals in 61 games during his time in Belgium.

Dong pulled on the red shirt for the first time in a friendly against Hong Kong XI in July 2005 and scored in the 2-0 win. The following summer he got the winning goal in a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs during the pre-season tour of South Africa.

He finally made his competitive debut for the first team against Chelsea in May 2007, but his struggle to break into Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad continued last season. He only made two senior appearances in 2007/08, in September's Carling Cup defeat to Coventry and as a substitute in the 1-1 Champions League draw in Rome.

Dong had more joy in the reserves, including four goals in a three-game purple patch in November 2007, before a knee injury ended his season early.

In this summer’s Olympics in his homeland, Dong scored a late equaliser for China against New Zealand but could not prevent his country exiting the tournament at the first stage.

Revealed: New Kit For 08/09

United's new third kit has been inspired by the success of 1968, when the Reds wore blue while becoming the first English team to lift the European Cup.

To celebrate 40 years since that momentous night, Nike has created a new kit worthy of that great team and their famous 4-1 win over Benfica at Wembley. The new blue shirt includes a number of details that commemorate the achievement including the embroidery of the words 'May 29th 1968' and '40th Year Anniversary' around the crest.

United captain Gary Neville said: "I think it’s fantastic, I like the traditional kits. I think we should wear kits that represent the history of the club and this one certainly does that.

"I think you will think about that night and that team when you wear this kit, particularly with the embroidery of the date around the badge. The fans will love it."

Rio Ferdinand said: "When you look at the final image you will associate it with the great team of 1968 with the likes of George Best and Bobby Charlton.

"Obviously they won the European Cup in blue so we hope we can walk in their shoes again with this kit. It's such a big part of the history of the club."

Wayne Rooney added: "It’s a nice kit. It’s been designed to celebrate 40 years since the European Cup win so it’s great to have a kit that remembers that team.

"When you come to a club like United, the history of the club is something that is important for new players to understand. It’s different to go out in blue but it’s all part of the club’s history and I think that’s important."

The kit will be on sale on 16 September.

Edwin In No Rush

Edwin van der Sar insists he is in no hurry to decide when he will bring down the curtain on his playing career.

The veteran goalkeeper has said he will review his position at the end of this year before deciding his future, but he insists this is not definitely his last season at United.

"You keep on going but, like I said, (I’ll look at the situation) in December," he said. "That’s what I’ve done for the last two years.

"I feel good with that and at the moment pre-season is almost over, so you can start playing the games week-in, week-out and I’m really looking forward to that. Then we’ll just see how long we keep going.

"I don’t want to put too much of a timeline on it or say too much about it. But as long as you’re fit and you enjoy it and the manager is happy and the players are happy that you’re there, that’s my main focus point."

The Dutchman ended his international career when Holland crashed out of Euro 2008, and he is hopeful that curtailing his Oranje association will prolong his playing days at United.

"Sometimes there’s a moment where you think it’s enough," he said. "I’ve quit the national team now because I gave everything I had for the national team and I can focus completely now on United. Hopefully that’s going to prolong my career this year or the year after."

New Kit Inspired By Greatness

United's new third kit has been inspired by the success of 1968, when the Reds wore blue while becoming the first English team to lift the European Cup.

To celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the momentous night, Nike has created a kit worthy of that great team and their famous 4-1 win over Benfica at Wembley. United will therefore wear blue as their third kit for the 2008/09 campaign and as the preferred kit for this season's Champions League away matches.

The new blue shirt includes a number of details that celebrate the anniversary including the embroidery of the words 'May 29th 1968' and '40th Year Anniversary' around the crest.

The kit uses Nike Fit fabric technology, first used by Nike in national team kits worn by Nike-sponsored teams in the 2006 World Cup. This technology is designed to enhance player performance by wicking sweat through the material and away from the skin. A full mesh back on the player's jerseys also aids ventilation.

United defender Rio Ferdinand said: "When you look at the final image you will associate it with the great team of 1968 with the likes of George Best and Bobby Charlton.

"Obviously they won the European Cup in blue so we hope we can walk in their shoes again with this kit. It's such a big part of the history of the club."

The new third kit will be unveiled this Thursday 28 August.

Anderson's Return Impresses Rio

Anderson may have lost some of his hair while he's been chasing a medal in China but unlike Samson he's lost none of his strength.

The midfielder missed the opening weeks of United's season while helping Brazil to achieve a bronze medal at the Olympic Games.

But after arriving back at five o'clock on Sunday, he was ready to play again at eight on Monday, much to the respect of his Reds' team-mates including captain Rio Ferdinand.

"Anderson did well... until he got to 60 minutes and started blowing!" laughed Rio on MUTV.

"No, we have a little joke with him about that kind of thing. But he's a fantastic footballer with great abilities and we've not seen the best of him yet, I'm sure."

However, the ever-fashion conscious Rio was not as impressed by Anderson's hairstyle.

"His barnet's shocking at the minute! His extensions have come out and he's been in China where he's had nobody with the capability to braid him up. Hopefully now he's back in Manchester he can get hold of the person who normally does it for him!"

Anderson wasn't the only midfielder to be mentioned in the skipper's speech after the victory at Portsmouth. He also had words of praise for Darren Fletcher, a man who's making the most of a mini injury-crisis to stake his claim for a regular place.

"I think it's great that players are posing problems for the manager because they're putting in performances that demand at least a place on the bench if not starting.

"Fletcher's been outstanding in pre season and he's carried that on at the start of the season, getting into the team to score.

"This win was vital because by the time we play next in the Premier League, we'll be a game or two behind teams and there could have been a big points difference between us if we'd not won. Mentally it would have been a bit of a downer.

"But we put in a good performance and got a good result. Our general play was very good, very fluid, we passed the ball from the back through to the front with a little bit of ease to be honest. Our midfielders were really good on the ball and we opened up Portsmouth a number of times."

Team-mate John O'Shea echoed Ferdinand's comments on Fletcher and Anderson, insisting both deserved great credit for their Fratton Park displays.

"We gave Anderson a bit of stick when we saw his hair!" joked O'Shea. "But he was amazing for us - a star performer. He gets the crowd going and the team - he's just all action. The sooner we have him flying again the better and I'm sure he'll play a vital part in the games we've got coming up.

"It's great to see Fletch doing so well," he added. "He said himself recently that he needs to try and get into the box a bit more and he's doing that with some great runs which are creating a lot of problems for defences. Great credit to him for getting the rewards his hard work fully deserves."

Man. United Win At Fratton Park

Darren Fletcher's deflected first-half strike was enough to give Manchester United victory over Portsmouth.

Pompey went close after only 12 seconds when Papa Bouba Diop's shot whistled past the post, before Wayne Rooney shot straight at David James from 12 yards.

United began to look dangerous down the flanks and from Patrice Evra's cross, Fletcher bundled in via Sol Campbell.

Pompey's best efforts came after the break but Jerome Thomas and Papa Bouba Diop saw their shots saved comfortably.

Portsmouth might have lacked any real cut and thrust but boss Harry Redknapp will take some consolation that their performance was better than the one that saw them thumped 4-0 by Chelsea in their opening game of the season last week.

Redknapp brought in on-loan left-back Armand Traore in a move designed to shore up the defence.

But with United restoring striker Carlos Tevez and Anderson to their line-up, Pompey were always likely to be stretched.

Yet it was the hosts who almost struck first when Bouba Diop rode a challenge before cracking a shot from 15 yards which zipped off the wet turf and was inches wide of the post.

Soon, though, United began to dictate the play, pulling Portsmouth - and particularly Bouba Diop - out of position.

Wayne Rooney made space in the box but hit his shot straight at David James, and shortly after the England keeper kept out a swerving Paul Scholes free-kick.

Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch were playing their first game together at Fratton Park and they almost combined to get Crouch in, but Evra nicked the ball of the former Liverpool man's toes when he about to shoot.

Back came United and when they worked the ball inside Diop, for the second time in a few minutes, Evra crossed from the left and Fletcher's effort went scrambled in off Campbell as Sylvain Distin failed to hook it off the line.

United might have led 2-0 at the break, but Rooney fired a shot just wide after he had superbly made space with an excellent first touch and turn on the edge of the box.

An hour of the game had been played before Portsmouth forced Edwin van der Sar into his first save, beating away substitute Thomas's vicious drive.

The slicker passing, more incisive movement and more dangerous play continued to come from United after the break, as it had in the opening 45 minutes.

However, the visitors seemed content to sit on their lead as the half wore on and as Pompey crept forward, Van der Sar had to be alert to keep out Bouba Diop's swirling shot.

But with the game compressed into he middle third, and Pompey short of ideas, chances were few and far between.

Despite playing within themselves United always seemed more likely to add to the scoring but Carlos Tevez shot wide from distance and then lofted a free-kick into the arm of James.

The result leaves Portsmouth rooted to the foot of the table, while United move up to fifth.

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp:
"I thought I was a very even game up until they scored. The way the first half went, I was well pleased.

"We have three or four players who haven't played for a while and missed a pre-season and I had to throw them in and take a chance on them.

"The work rate was much better today and you couldn't fault the effort. I thought we played okay."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson:
"We played some excellent football tonight. This is a difficult place to come, so it is a bonus to come here and win.

"We tried to play a system where the players would be comfortable. We wanted to have Anderson playing centrally, close to Carlos Tevez.

"We let Paul Scholes control the game, and used Darren Fetcher's energy."

Portsmouth: James, Kaboul, Campbell, Distin, Johnson, Diop, Davis (Utaka 66), Diarra, Armand Traore (Thomas 56), Crouch, Defoe.

Striker Search Concerns Sir Alex

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson says time is running out to sign a striker before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

United have been linked with a host of strikers in recent weeks, notably Tottenham forward Dimitar Berbatov.

"I am less optimistic than I was," said Ferguson, who had vowed to sign a striker for the start of the season.

"We have 11 days left before the transfer deadline and we are working at something, you never know in football."

The Premier League and European champions have also been linked with David Silva, Thierry Henry, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Roque Santa Cruz, who signed a new four-year contract with Blackburn on Friday.

Berbatov himself has spoken in recent weeks of his desire to join United, but has not been granted what he has described as his "dream" transfer.

United do have Fraizer Campbell and Danny Wellbeck who are young and inexperienced, while Louis Saha has been bedevilled by a succession of injuries.

Cristiano Ronaldo is recovering from ankle surgery leaving only Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez as viable options for Ferguson up front.

Rooney has often come under criticism for his all action displays and has been urged to spend less time defending and become more selfish.

"Wayne does too much around the pitch at the expense of what he does up front," said Ferguson.
"It is a waste of his energy to chase back to our own penalty area for instance.

"But it is not something to worry about too much. It is purely down to enthusiasm and natural energy. He just loves playing football."

"He needs to be more involved around the edge of the box - but it is only a small correction."

Meanwhile Ferguson has said that despite not being able to secure the services of a new striker he will not be tempted to rush back Ronaldo, who scored 42 goals for United last season.

United visibly lacked Ronaldo's cutting edge in front of gaol during their 1-1 draw with Newcastle at Old Trafford on Sunday.

"If a player is out for a certain period there is no point rushing it," said Ferguson. "You may as well wait the extra week or two to make sure they don't suffer any setbacks.

"Sometimes the age of a player helps with their recovery.

"Cristiano may get back quicker. But we are not putting him under any pressure.

"We have to let the physios do their job properly."

6 Red Devils Up For UEFA Awards

The Reds' sensational Double success of last season could lead to more honours this week at the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year awards.

United are the best-represented club with no fewer than six players shortlisted as the best performers in their positions for the 2007/08 campaign.

Edwin van der Sar is up for the best goalkeeper award while Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic are in contention for the defender gong.

Paul Scholes’ name is in the hat for the midfielder prize while front men Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo will be vying for the forward of the year honour. All six Reds could also win the overall Club Footballer of the Year award.

The shortlists reflect the Premier League’s dominance of the Champions League last season, with 17 of the 20 candidates for the awards plying their trade in England. Added to United's six are five from Chelsea (Peter Cech, John Terry, Michael Essien, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba), four from Liverpool (Pepe Reina, Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres) and two from Arsenal (Manuel Almunia, Cesc Fabregas).

The three nominees from outside the English game are Schalke 04 goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, Barcelona defender Carles Puyol and his team-mate, forward Lionel Messi.

Coaches of the 16 teams that reached the knockout phase of the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League were invited to cast their votes. The award winners will be announced at the draw for this season's group stage on Thursday 28 August – the day before United face UEFA Cup winners Zenit St Petersburg in the UEFA Super Cup final at Monaco's Stade Louis II.

Giggs: We Need To Be Hungry

Ryan Giggs admits United must match Chelsea for hunger in order to retain the Barclays Premier League trophy for a third straight season.

The Reds have pipped the Blues to the title in the last two seasons and, having endured barren years himself with United, Giggs is well aware of the galvanising effect such silverware starvation can have.

"They didn't win the Premier League last year," Ryan told Sky Sports News. "I've been in that position where you've not won it. You're hungry and determined, and you want to win it, simple as that.

"We've got to match their determination, their hunger and their desire. We've got players at the club who've tasted success over the last couple of years and want more."

Chelsea made a flying start to the new campaign by crushing Portsmouth at Stamford Bridge, while an injury-hit United side were held at home by Newcastle.

Giggs isn't too perturbed to be trailing Luiz Felipe Scolari's side so early on, however, and feels that the signing of a new striker would further enhance United's chances of completing a Premier League hat-trick.

"We're all disappointed we didn't win as every team wants to get off to a winning start, but we did okay," he said. "Obviously, Carlos was not there on Sunday, which was disappointing, and Wayne missed a bit of pre-season.

"He would have liked a few more games under his belt, while Fraizer is a young lad. Ideally you want four or five strikers, but we haven't got that.

"I think we're always getting linked with players, especially when you don't win the first game, and you've got a couple of strikers injured or missing."

Silvestre Completes Move To Gunners

Mikael Silvestre has completed a transfer to Arsenal for an undisclosed fee, bringing down the curtain on a nine-year Manchester United career.

The French defender, who joined from Internazionale in September 1999, made 361 appearances for the Reds, scoring 10 goals and winning 10 major honours.

Speaking after Silvestre had completed the formalities of his move, Sir Alex Ferguson told ManUtd.com: “Mikael was a great servant and a wonderful professional. We wish him all the best at his new club and thank him for his service.”

Silvestre performed in the centre or left side of defence for the Reds, but was hit by serious back-to-back injuries in his United career, suffering a dislocated shoulder and cruciate knee ligament damage in 2007.

With Patrice Evra established as United’s first-choice left back, and the central partnership of Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand seemingly set in stone, Mikael was unlikely to find regular first team football at Old Trafford this season.

Arsenal have swooped to add Silvestre’s international experience to their backline, and the popular Frenchman joins compatriots William Gallas, Gael Clichy, Bacary Sagna, Abou Diaby, Armand Traore and Samir Nasri at the Emirates Stadium.

Mikael has penned a two-year deal and will wear the number 18 shirt for the Gunners.

Mikael treasures United memories

Mikael Silvestre is relishing the 'new challenge' of life at Arsenal, but will always have fond memories of his epic United career.

The versatile French defender won 10 major trophies in almost a decade at Old Trafford, but completed a move to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday evening.

"I’ve spent a large part of my career at United, the last nine years, and I’ll remember that time fondly but feel I’m ready for a new challenge," he told the official Arsenal website.

"Arsenal is known for playing technical and skilful football, and has a young but experienced squad. I’m really excited about this next stage of my career, hopefully playing my part in helping the club to new successes."

Silvestre made 361 appearances for the Reds after arriving from Internazionale in 1999, but becomes the second defender to leave Old Trafford this summer, after Gerard Pique rejoined Barcelona.

New Saudi Deal For United

Manchester United have signed a five-year sponsorship deal with Middle East telecommunications giant Saudi Telecom.

The multi-million pound agreement gives Saudi Telecom exclusive rights to mobile phone content within Saudi Arabia, building on a close relationship with the Kingdom which was enhanced in January when Sir Alex Ferguson took his first-team squad there.

"Our match earlier this year in Riyadh demonstrated the passion our Saudi fans have for Manchester United," said Red Devils chief executive David Gill.

"We believe this groundbreaking partnership will bring the action of Manchester United direct to our many fans in Saudi Arabia."

In gaining access to Saudi Telecom's estimated 15 million subscribers, United hope to build on their own already large fan base in the region.

The ability to sign such a contract, which does not have anything to do with shirt sponsorship, emphasises what a global appeal United have.

It is thought the Red Devils will be heading to Asia again next summer but after recent trips to Saudi Arabia and Nigeria, India appears to be the next territory where United are keen to make inroads.

Owen's Best Yet To Come

Owen Hargreaves has a point to prove this season - a self-imposed target of showing his true abilities for the Reds.

The 27-year-old midfielder, who missed United's entire pre-season, is working on his fitness after a flare-up of the tendinitis problem that disrupted his debut season at Old Trafford.

The part he played in 2007/08's success should not be underplayed, but Hargreaves believes he never operated above half capacity.

"There is a lot more to come from me," he says confidently. "I don't think I played a game healthy last season. I was at about 50 or 60% at best. When I had a scan on the knee this summer it hadn't improved, so I came back early to try to fix it at the start of pre-season. Hopefully I'll be fit soon."

In the current climate of injuries, suspensions and absentees, Hargreaves's midfield bite is sorely missed but, despite his determination to return, no comeback date is set in stone.

"I'm not setting a timetable but I am close," he said. "I've not joined the lads yet, hopefully it will happen this week. Whether I'm fit for Portsmouth or the match after that, the most important thing is I'm healthy for the rest of the season."

Owen's Key Games

He may not feel like he was operating above "50 or 60 per cent" but Hargreaves more than played his part last term. Here are three key performances from 2007/08...

Liverpool 0 United 1
Anfield, 16.12.07
The smash and grab job at Anfield was a gleaming example of a controlled and accomplished defensive performance, and Hargreaves was vital in the Reds' midfield engine room. Anderson, Tevez and Rio may have grabbed the attention, but Hargreaves' part was crucial.

United 2 Arsenal 1
Old Trafford, 13.04.08
Managing to take the free-kick responsibilities off Ronaldo was a feat in itself. But his winning strike against the Gunners was a critical moment in the title race. The match proved that Hargreaves is a player for the big occasion.

United 1 Chelsea 1 (6-5 pens)
Luzhniki Stadium, 21.5.08
With Ronaldo switched to the left, Hargreaves started on the right. He pushed Ashley Cole deeper into defence and delivered some excellent crosses. When he moved into central midfield later in the game he was vital. Scored a cracking penalty in the shoot-out.

Campbell 'Sticking Around'

After making his first league start for the Reds against Newcastle, Fraizer Campbell says he is “sticking around” for more first-team opportunities, despite interest from other clubs.

For Campbell, the experience of playing alongside Wayne Rooney in front of 75,000 fans at Old Trafford is everything he has worked for in his fledgling career, and reported interested from former loan club Hull City won't lure him away.

“It’s difficult to put into words what it felt like,” he said. “It’s great. It’s what I’ve been working for ever since I joined this club so it was great to get out there. I hope to get more chances in the team, I’ll be sticking around for a bit.”

Playing against Newcastle was a bittersweet moment for the 20-year-old striker. Named in the starting line-up for the first time in the Premier League, Campbell turned in a real livewire display up front. Despite being held to a draw by Kevin Keegan’s side, the Huddersfield-born forward relished the experience.

“Obviously on your debut you wanted everything to go well, but I really enjoyed myself and I think we were unlucky not to get the result that we deserved,” he told MUTV.

Campbell was denied a goal to cap his impressive display by Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given, whose unorthodox save stopped a stunning first-half header.

“He (Given) was trying his best to upset me,” Campbell said. “It happened so quickly, I didn’t see how he saved it but a few people told me afterwards that it hit him in the face. That’s the way it goes sometimes.

“We responded brilliantly to their goal, coming back to score ourselves. We took over the game there and I think we should have come away with the three points after that.

“A draw isn't the end of the world. Not losing your first game of the season stands you in good stead for the rest of the campaign.

"Hopefully we can go on to repeat some of the things United achieved last season.”

Fletcher Rues Magpies Draw

Goalscorer Darren Fletcher was frustrated after United could only manage a 1-1 draw with Newcastle on the opening day of the season.

Obafemi Martins stunned Old Trafford with an excellent headed opener for the Magpies in the 22nd minute, only for Fletcher to stab home United’s leveller two minutes later.

And the Scot felt that the ideal timing of his goal should have propelled the Reds to go on and win the match against Kevin Keegan’s spirited side.

He told MUTV: “To draw the first game is disappointing. I felt we made enough chances to win the match – Shay Given pulled off some fantastic saves.

“Newcastle defended well and on the counter-attack they are dangerous because they have a lot of pace, so we had to be a bit cautious.

“It was a great leap and header from Martins, but fortunately we replied straight away, which really helps. We really thought we could push on and get the second goal, but unfortunately it never happened.”

Fletcher was nevertheless pleased with his strike, which came about after he forged into the area to get on the end of Ryan Giggs’ inviting cross.

“I’ve been making a conscious effort to get into the box because we’ve got players who can put great balls in there,” Fletcher continued.

“If you keep getting in there, the law of averages says you’re going to get a goal. I missed a few chances in pre-season so it was nice to score.”

Carlos Tevez did not play following a family bereavement and Fletcher admitted the Reds missed the in-form striker’s cut and thrust.

He said: “Carlos was frightening in pre-season – he looked so sharp. It was disappointing to lose him as he was onto something special and playing really well. But he’ll be back.

“We have a shortage of numbers up front and we’re missing a lot of players generally, but those players will return and we’ll have a formidable squad.”

United are already behind the pace at the top following wins for the rest of the so-called ‘Big Four’, but Fletcher knows it is far too early to panic, especially after the mediocre start the champions made to the 2007/08 campaign.

“We’re two points behind so we’ve given them a headstart, but hopefully we’ll catch them,” the 24-year-old added.

“We’ve been here before – we started poorly last season but it’s only day one, we play everybody twice and we’ll be raring to go for Portsmouth.”

Man. United Begin Defence Of League Title With 1-1 Stalemate Against Toon Army

Manchester United made an unconvincing start to the defence of their Premier League title as they were held at Old Trafford by an impressive Newcastle.

The hosts were denied a penalty when James Milner appeared to handle, but Newcastle took a first-half lead when Obafemi Martins powered home a header.

Manchester United levelled only two minutes later when Darren Fletcher converted Ryan Giggs' left-wing cross.

Nemanja Vidic headed against the bar, but Newcastle fully deserved a point.

Magpies boss Kevin Keegan will be delighted with their committed performance, while Sir Alex Ferguson will surely now increase his efforts to buy a striker.

His side's preparations were hit by the absence of striker Carlos Tevez, who flew home to Argentina following a family bereavement.

That led to Fraizer Campbell making his first Premier League start for the club, leading the line with Wayne Rooney who had recovered from a virus.

It was a frantic start to the game, proper end-to-end start-of-the-season stuff, with the two Uniteds taking it in turns to launch an attack.

The Red Devils thought they should have had a penalty when Giggs' free-kick struck Milner on the hand, while Shay Given remarkably saved Campbell's point-blank header with his own head.

Given made a magnificent double save too, from Rooney's low right-foot drive and then Paul Scholes' close-range follow-up.

But Newcastle, who were destroyed 6-0 in the corresponding fixture last season, were in no mood to lie down this time and they created a host of chances themselves.

Impressive new signing Jonas Gutierrez should have had a free-kick on the edge of the United box when he was bundled over by Vidic, before they took the lead.

Milner swung over a corner from the right and Martins rose unchallenged to power a header past Edwin van der Sar and into the net. But with defender Steven Taylor off the pitch receiving treatment, the home team almost immediately got themselves back on level terms.

Giggs found space down the left and sent over a low cross, Fletcher timing his run to perfection to divert the ball past Given and into the net.

It had been a breathless first 25 minutes and as the tempo of the game began to slow, so did the number of chances on offer.

Ferguson's team have been notoriously slow starters for many a year now and their usually precise, swift counter-attacking was a touch off-key on the opening day.

Martins continued to be a threat and shortly after the break he cut in from the left and forced Van der Sar to make a save.

At the other end Campbell was struggling to make an impression, though he did come to life with one run and shot that forced another brilliant low one-handed save from the ever reliable Given.

But they rarely looked like breaking Newcastle down and Vidic's downward header that looped up on to the bar apart, the visitors saw out the game in relative comfort.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson:
"We played well in the first half, and their goalkeeper made several good saves to keep them in the match.

"Our attacking play in the first half was good. But as soon as we lost Ryan Giggs to a hamstring injury and Michael Carrick with an ankle, which is swollen up badly - he'll be out for two to three weeks - we lost a bit of our experience in midfield.

"We had possession of the ball but didn't make it count at times - but in light of the people we had missing, it was a creditable result for us."

Newcastle manager Kevin Keegan:
"That was a good, good performance from us and we thoroughly deserved a point.

"Of course you are going to have to ride your luck when you come to a place like this and we did, but no-one can say we got more than we deserved.

"Newcastle fans will go away saying how they witnessed a team playing for the supporters, playing for the badge, playing for the club - and that's what they deserve.

"There were lots of good things for us to build on but we mustn't get carried away as there are a lot of tough games to come."

Carrick faces 3-week absence

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick could be out for up to three weeks because of the ankle injury he sustained against Newcastle on Sunday.

"Michael suffered a bad blow to his ankle," said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. "It was pretty swollen. He will be out for two or three weeks."

Carrick, 27, has already pulled out of the England squad for Wednesday's friendly against the Czech Republic.
He will also miss United's games with Portsmouth and Zenit St Petersburg.

United travel to Fratton Park in the Premier League on 25 August and take on the Russian side in Monaco in the European Super Cup on 29 August.

Carrick, who limped off after 25 minutes of United's 1-1 draw with the Magpies, has been replaced in the England squad by Tottenham's Jermaine Jenas.

United hope he will be fit to return against Liverpool on 13 September.

Ferguson's side, who also lost Ryan Giggs to a hamstring injury during Sunday's game, while young striker Fraizer Campbell also picked up a knock, were already without a long list of players.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Louis Saha, Park Ji-Sung and Owen Hargreaves are all injured, winger Nani is suspended, midfielder Anderson is on Olympic duty with Brazil and Carlos Tevez missed the game against Newcastle game after flying back to Argentina following a family bereavement.

Edwin Plans December Review

Edwin van der Sar says he will make a decision on his United future at the end of the year.

The 37-year-old stopper, United's shoot-out hero in last season's Champions League final, joined from Fulham in 2005, but is out of contract next summer.

Van der Sar recently retired from international football following Holland's quarter-final exit from Euro 2008 in a bid to prolong his club career.

The Dutchman has not ruled out playing beyond the new season, but believes waiting until December will allow him to properly assess all the factors involved.

"I do not know [if it is my final year]. I look at it from year to year," he told Voetbal International.

"If everyone is happy, okay. But if you are faced with injuries and you miss long periods, then you have a different outlook.

"I could play a very steady season and do well or the club might no longer be satisfied.

"In December I will look to see how things are - that's a good time to decide."

Berbatov To Be Man. United Latest Signing?

The latest gossip about Tottenham's Berbatov......

The soon-to-be ex Spurs player will be making the switch to Man. United within the next 48 hours, if it is rumoured to be accurate. The price of the transfer will be in the region of £25 to £28 million.

Sir Alex Ferguson has mentioned after his side win over Portsmouth in last Sunday Community Shield that a new striker will be arriving before the Red Devils defence of their Premiership title against Newcastle on 17th August.

Could Berbatov be the new signing that Fergie is talking about? It is also rumoured that Man. United have even delayed having their official team photo taken so they can include the Bulgarian.

So, will we expect Berbatov to ditch the white jersey for the red colour of Manchester? Please watch this space for the latest updates about the Bulgarian impending transfer......

Big Things Expected Of Nani

Sir Alex Ferguson believes United fans will witness increasingly mature performances from Nani this season once he has completed the remainder of his three-game domestic ban.

The Portuguese winger was dismissed for head-butting Lucas Neill in retaliation for a nasty challenge by the Australian in the penultimate league game of last season against West Ham.

Nani was forced to sit out the last-day trip to Wigan back in May and will miss United's next two league matches against Newcastle and Portsmouth.

However, when he does return to action, Sir Alex is expecting big things from the 21-year-old.

"Nani has gone through the same process as all the young players and you are looking for that jump up in performance level," explained the United boss.

“His maturity should be better as well, which is important. He is a very young 21. That immaturity showed itself against West Ham at the end of the season. That has cost us because he is missing for the first two games.

“But when he develops that he will be an outstanding talent. He has courage and speed, can play with both feet and does not melt in big atmospheres.”

Neville Praises Tevez

Gary Neville spoke about two sides of Carlos Tevez's game after the striker inspired United to glory in the 2008 Community Shield.

The Argentinian was a constant threat to Portsmouth and scored the Reds' first kick in the victorious penalty shoot-out. But Tevez's angry reaction after being outrageously rugby-tackled in the box by Hermann Hreidarsson could have resulted in a red card.

"I didn't see Carlos' reaction," admitted Neville, "but I imagine it would have been one of frustration.

"It looked (like it should have been) a penalty (to United) from where I was. If a player doesn't get the decision that he wants, then the emotion of the game and the importance of it means they are going to react.

"We can't take that human element out of football. It's just a case of keeping the reaction under control."

Tevez had no such trouble controlling the ball as he buzzed around the pitch in his first Wembley appearance for the Reds. Neville was delighted to witness it, especially at first-hand.

"He's probably been our most exciting player in pre-season," said Gary.

"He's been fantastic throughout all the games. He caused Portsmouth a lot of problems and could have had one or two goals. He was deservedly the (match sponsor's) man of the match.

"As for me, it was fantastic, just to get a competitive game under my belt. After being out for so long, I was just happy being out there with the lads and being part of it again. Hopefully this season I can contribute and earn my corn."

Neville now aims to lead out the team against Newcastle next Sunday, after reporting no adverse reaction to his first competitive start since March 2007.

"Touch wood, I didn't feel anything. Apart from picking up something in Nigeria, I've had a decent pre-season.

"I trained all last week. I just need more games really for my sharpness."

Man. United Claim Community Shield In Shoot-out Win Over Portsmouth

Manchester United needed a penalty shoot-out to capture the Community Shield despite producing a dominant display against Portsmouth at Wembley.

Pompey failed to score three of their four spot-kicks to hand victory to Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

United had completely controlled the game but wasted a series of chances.

Darren Fletcher somehow failed to turn in Nani's cross and had a lob turned on to the bar by David James, who also denied Carlos Tevez with a superb stop.

Ferguson has made signing a new striker his priority as his side prepare to open the defence of their Premier League title against Newcastle on 17 August and, on this evidence, it is clear why.

With last season's 42-goal top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo out injured for at least another month and Wayne Rooney doubtful to face the Magpies because of a virus, Ferguson is short of options up front.

Against Portsmouth, he chose Ryan Giggs as the man to partner Tevez in attack but the Welshman made only a limited impression.

And the number of chances that United wasted will reinforce Ferguson's belief he needs to make a goalscorer his first summer signing.

Portuguese winger Nani was behind most of United's best moments as they ripped through the Pompey defence, seemingly at will, but an end product was nowhere to be seen.

Nani's pace worried Harry Redknapp's side early on, with Sol Campbell and Glen Johnson in particular looking sluggish, and as the first half wore on, United looked increasingly threatening.

James did enough to put off Nemanja Vidic as he rose to meet a free-kick and the veteran goalkeeper also denied Giggs twice in quick succession.

Another glorious chance came and went when Nani stole possession from Johnson and crossed for Fletcher, who was unmarked in the middle but failed to connect with his shot and knocked the ball away from goal with his second touch.

By now Campbell was having a torrid time and he was embarrassed again when Nani cleverly chipped him and also clipped the ball over James before Sylvain Distin cleared the danger.

Pompey created next to nothing in the first half, with their £18.5m strike partnership of Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe barely having a sniff of the ball, let alone a meaningful chance.

And United stayed well on top in the second half with Ferguson's side continuing to pour forward.

Fletcher almost made amends for his earlier miss when he picked up James' punched clearance and lobbed the ball goalwards only to see the keeper somehow recover to turn the ball on to the crossbar.

Giggs was the next player to waste an opportunity when he scuffed his shot in front of goal, before James produced another wonder-stop to push Tevez's curling effort around the post.

Portsmouth were fortunate again soon after when Hermann Hreidarsson grabbed the Argentine's leg and hauled him down in the area but referee Peter Walton ignored the challenge and then missed Tevez's reaction - which saw him grab the defender by the neck.

It took 76 minutes for Redknapp's side to muster a shot on target - a looping effort by substitute John Utaka that presented an easy catch for Edwin van der Sar.

But United's inability to find the net meant Pompey took the game to a shoot-out, only to fluff their best chance of victory.

Lassana Diarra set the precedent when he blasted their first spot-kick high into the stands and, although Defoe converted his effort, Arnold Mvuemba saw his shot saved before Johnson missed to hand United victory.

Tevez, Giggs and Michael Carrick all made no mistake for United who pick up the first piece of silverware of the new season.

Man Utd: Van der Sar, Neville (Brown 66), Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Fletcher, O'Shea (Carrick 66), Scholes, Giggs, Nani (Campbell 79), Tevez.

Ronaldo: The Full Interview

Cristiano Ronaldo has spoken at length about his future and this summer's speculation in an interview with Publico, a newspaper in his native Portugal.

Here, with Publico's kind permission, is the full transcript:

Sir Alex Ferguson said this week it was "the end of the matter." Is this true?
"Yes. My coach was kind enough to come and see me in Lisbon a few days ago, which I think is common knowledge. It was a very honest conversation between two people that respect one other and that I'm sure share a mutual affection and friendship. What we said to each other will remain private. Sir Alex listened to me, I listened to him and we established that the best for both sides would be for me to continue at Old Trafford. So, I can confirm that I'll be playing for Manchester United next season. And before there are any rumours about me staying against my will, I want to make one thing clear: whoever says or writes anything to that effect is lying. I'll be playing at United with my heart and soul. I will fight and honour the shirt with the same desire and dedication as I always have.

"How do you think the people at Real Madrid will feel about this?
"I want to say that I was the one that was responsible for all this controversy. It wasn't their fault because it was me that said publicly that I wanted to move to Real Madrid. It was also me, although wholly unintentionally, that caused the friction between the two clubs."

Your statements this summer demonstrated your desire to leave United and move to Madrid. What did you actually want?
"I knew that Real Madrid were interested in signing me and that they had, allegedly, made a very substantial offer to United. For a while, I wanted Manchester to accept the offer and for me to move to Madrid. If I denied it I would be deceiving everyone, including myself. Anyone who knows me knows that it would have to be something very important for me to admit such a thing. If there's one thing I've never been - nor do I ever want to be - it is ungrateful. Manchester United - from the Glazer family, the directors, namely David Gill, to the coaches, team-mates and backroom staff - is a club that will always be dear to my heart. Whatever happens in the future, that will never change. I'm very aware of what this club has done for me and I'll be eternally grateful, come what may. But it was because of this, because I knew this club was different and extraordinarily human, that I hoped that my wishes and my reasons would be understood.

"What were the reasons that made you want to leave?
"After we'd won the Champions League, I felt that in five years I had helped win everything there was to win. We'd won the Premier League twice and I'd won a host of individual awards, including the best goalscorer in the Premier League, Champions League and in Europe. So I felt that maybe I needed a new challenge. I never hid the fact that I wanted to play in Spain, at Real Madrid in particular, and I thought this could be the right moment. United and Real are probably the two biggest clubs in the world and it would never be an easy decision to make. Apart from the challenge, everyone realises that Spanish and Portuguese culture and lifestyle are more similar. Those were the reasons that made me consider the change.

"Nothing else? The attraction of an even more generous wage that Real Madrid are said to be willing to pay, for example?
"I'm aware that, whatever the circumstances, there will always be speculation about me. I knew that there would always be someone who'd say that my main concern was making more money. Others would insist that my vanity couldn't resist being linked to the biggest transfer fee of all time at the age of 23. Of course I am proud to see my work recognised, but none of this had any major effect on what I wanted. In fact, if it was just a question of money, I would never leave United.

"Apart from the reasons I've just given, I also have to recognise that my family would welcome the change. The chance of being an hour's flight from my mother and the rest of my family was very attractive, even more so playing for a club like Real Madrid. I know I have to deal with these circumstances, even though it's difficult sometimes, but it's harder to ask the same of the people I love the most. The best proof of what I've just said is the fact that I've just made a major investment in a house in Manchester, even though I didn't have to. I did it not just for my own comfort but also for those closest to me. The people at United, particularly the manager, understood my reasons. But we all eventually concluded that I should continue to wear that number 7 shirt. It's no sacrifice for me, it's a great honour. I have important things to win in England. I will give everything I have to United. I want to defend the European Cup and help United become world champions, not forgetting the league and other cups.

"Are you afraid of the reception you'll get from the United fans?
"No, to be honest. It's possible but I hope it doesn't happen. I know I'm a good professional, I know that no one's harder on me than myself and that's never going to change, under any circumstances. The high point of my career was winning the Champions League. No one will ever erase that from my memory, in the same way that no one will ever erase the fact that I did it in a United shirt. What I said publicly, which was maybe a little naive, I take total responsibility for. People have to understand one thing: at the age of 18 I arrived at a dream club like United. It was a dream come true. But, even at that moment, I was thinking about playing in England for some years and then going to play in Spain. Even at that time I was thinking that way, and I always gave 100% everything. Why lie? I'm not going to be a hypocrite and say the opposite of what I think, like some others do. I said exactly what I thought: I have a dream of playing at Real and I thought it was time to move on. People can't be upset about me fulfilling a childhood dream.

"But would it be fair for United to lose you while you are still under contract?
"I'm very aware of what this club has done for me. I'll be forever grateful. United and its fans can be sure that I'll never forget them, no matter what happens. They're special and they'll always have a place here [puts hand on heart]. In fact, I confess that one of the reasons I had the courage to say what I did was the fact that United would be fairly compensated. The figure mentioned, which would be a world record, would serve as some compensation for the debt of gratitude that I owe the club, as least in material terms. I'm going to say something here that I've never told anybody: if we hadn't been European champions I probably wouldn't have even thought about going to Madrid. And there is something else that should be mentioned: I never wanted to leave against United's will. When they turned down the offer, the people at United made it very clear how much they wanted me. I didn't fully understand it at the time, but now I can really appreciate it."

But you agreed with Sepp Blatter when the president of Fifa said that long-term contracts between players and clubs were a form of "modern slavery"?
"That makes no sense, nor do I believe that's what he meant, as he himself has already stated. My comment was about something else. I was saying that players should be where they feel happy. Nothing more."

Sir Alex was always intransigent and denied any possibility of a transfer...
"Believe me, it makes me proud to know how much he thinks of me. And he knows I feel exactly the same way about him. He has been one of the most important people in my playing career. Not only because of what I've learnt and continue to learn from him in sporting terms but also in human ones as well. I love the passion he has for football. If it were humanly possible I would like to have him always by my side. Of course it's not possible but it shows how much affection, admiration and respect I have for him. He has always been like a second father to me at United. I'll never forget it was him that explained the significance of the number 7 United shirt, which will always be my shirt. When I was at Sporting I had a number of offers, some of them very lucrative. One of them offered eight million Euros just as a signing on fee and meant that I would play for Sporting for one more year and then leave as a free agent. But money isn't everything. Real, Barcelona, Inter, Milan, Juventus, Valencia and practically all the big clubs were also interested.

"At the time, Jorge Mendes explained that United also wanted me and that Sir Alex Ferguson had told him that he would be very careful with my playing career. So I would play at least 50% of the games in the first season, which is what happened. This shows that I also chose United and that money wasn't the deciding factor. Alongside my agent [Mendes], Sir Alex Ferguson has been the most important person I've ever known in my career. Because of this, because of the special relationship that exists between us, I know that he'll understand that there are times when a father has to worry only about what's best for his child."

The Spanish press continues to say that your future is at Real Madrid...
"There's no point in making predictions. It's not worth speculating because nothing is set in stone and things change all the time in football. Today there are opportunities that no one knows if they will come round again in the future. There are only two certainties: I'll be playing at United, a club I'm proud to represent; Real Madrid will continue to be a great club without me and I will continue to admire them, as I have done since I was a boy. I'm saying what I think and I hope that all the speculation will stop. The press has written some terrible things about me and about this whole thing. They've invented a thousand and one things and that's one of the reasons why I decided to talk about this now. You can be sure of one thing: everything I've said comes from the bottom of my heart and is the only truth."

Which means you don't exclude the possibility the dream of playing for Madrid?
"I'm 100% professional and I've always given my heart and soul to this club. I even played a major part of the season injured, which was verified by my operation. I played in excruciating pain while taking anti-inflammatory medication every day. And I'd do it again if necessary. This club deserves it because the United staff and the fans are fantastic, not forgetting the affection and respect I have for Sir Alex Ferguson. If one day I leave the club, I want to do it knowing that I did everything I could to help the club win as much as possible. If that happens, I'll leave with the feeling of having done my duty to the maximum."
