TV Drama Series Review -- A Liter of Tears

Imagine this scenario:

You have been struck with an incurable disease that will possibly cause you to become bedridden. How will you react upon hearing this piece of bad news? Will you accept your fate or live life to the fullest?

Based on a true inspirational story:

This story is about a girl named Aya who suffered from an incurable disease, but lived life to the fullest until her death at 25. The original story is based on the diary Aya kept writing until she could no longer hold a pen. The book that later followed entitled "One Liter of Tears" has sold over 1.1 million copies.

Aya's only wish was "to live." By carefully depicting Aya's earnest desire to live, and the love of her family, friends, and lover, the drama, "One Liter of Tears" wishes to deliver her simple but strong message: "Just being alive is such a lovely and wonderful thing."

The Story:

The drama starts right before Aya (Erika SAWAJIRI) is hit with the tragic illness, called Spinocerebellar Degeneration, in which the nerve cells of areas necessary for the human body to move and balance - including the cerebellum, brain stem, and spinal cord - transforms and eventually disappears.15-year old Aya Ikeuchi is the eldest daughter of a typical Japanese family. She lives with her cheerful and reliable mother, Shioka (Hiroko YAKUSHIMARU), father Mizuo (Takanori JINNAI), owner of a tofu shop, younger sisters Ako (Riko NARUMI) and Rika (Ai MIYOSHI), and younger brother Hiroki (Yuuma SANADA).On the day of her high school entrance exam, Aya is full of energy as she leaves the house. But she falls asleep on the bus and misses her stop. She gets off the bus and starts running in the rain, slips and falls, injuring her knee. That's when she meets Haruto Aso (Ryo NISHIKIDO), who was planning to skip the exam. He gives her a ride on his bicycle to school where the exam will be given. Aya is allowed to take the exam in the school nurse's office, and manages to pass. When the new semester begins, Aya is elected class rep. and joins the basketball team. On the boys team is someone she has eyes for, which adds to the things she has to look forward to.Amidst her happy days at school, Aya begins to experience physical difficulties. She often drops food from her chopsticks while eating, can't pour water into a cup without spilling it, and occasionally wobbles while she walks. Aya's mother Shioka, a former nurse, is the only person that realizes these changes. One day, Aya is about to leave home as usual. When she starts to run, she trips over her own feet and falls. She couldn't protect herself with her arms while falling, causing her to land on her face - making her bleed heavily. This injury soon reveals the existence of Aya's fateful disease.......

Erika Sawajiri plays the character Aya in the show, A liter of tears.

Aya is struck with an incurable disease known as Spinocerebellar Degeneration.

In spite of this setback, Aya chooses to live life to the fullest until her death at age 25.

A liter of tears is currently showing on Starhub cable television channel 56, Mondays and Tuesdays at 11pm.

Rating: 4.5 stars out of 5

This is an absolutely good show. It has all the ingredients of a successful drama serial: heartwarming story, strong acting by the cast and is very inspirational. This is the show to watch with your family, friends or with your loved ones.

"The most important thing about life is enjoying every moment of life itself...."

The Pigeon......

A picture paints a thousand words, depending on how you view it......

Look at the pigeon in this picture. What do you see?

This picture was taken on a rainy saturday afternoon, when a pigeon decided to take shelter from the rain. It was aware of my presence and did not flew away even though I took a picture of it very closely.

What a clever pigeon! It waited for half an hour for the rain to stop before flying away and for that period of time, it was looking blankly into space, as if wondering about something. What could it be thinking about?

Could the pigeon be thinking about its family? How about when the rain will end? Or is it something else that is bothering it?

In my own opinion, the pigeon must be quite anxious for the rain to stop, so that it can fly away from the shelter in order to explore the world and to look for its fellow pigeons to interact with. In addition, the pigeon does feel kind of lonely in this picture... .

I think I must be quite like this lonely pigeon, in need of friends or some company. I am very keen to explore the world around me and to learn something. Shall I venture out from my comfort zone or to remain inside for the pursuit of my happiness?

The definition of happiness varies from person to person. Some people are easily contended, whereas some have rather high expectations.

I have this feeling of emptyness in my life, as if lacking something..... . Friendships come and go easily, trust is easily broken and commitment is not always fulfilled. In this hectic world, who will really spend some time treating people with utmost sincerity, honesty, patience and total commitment?

Relationships are hard to build in the first place, but is definitely easy to end. Commitment and trust has to be one of the key factors in sustaining any form of relationship in order for it to be everlasting. Communication is also an important ingredient too.

Have I found the person who shares the same thoughts / opinions on relationships? I am not sure, but I think there are some people who will actually take some time off from this frantic world in order to experience the richness of true friendship or other form of relationship.

I admit I am quite a lone ranger, without any friends for company. Sometimes the feeling of loneliness strikes me suddenly, and left me to wonder about the void I am having right now. Will the void be filled, or will it just be a void that forever stays with me?

I have to be like the pigeon, waiting for the opportunity to venture out when given the chance to do so...... . In the pursuit of true relationship, I will keep on searching for the right person.

Music Album Review -- Show Luo Zhi Xiang (SPESHOW)

The long awaited album from Show Luo Zhi Xiang is out!!

This latest offering is titled SPESHOW and it is his 4th album so far. It consists of 11 tracks that are worth listening to.

In SPESHOW album, Show has worked together with Japanese singer Kumi Koda and Simon Webbe in track 6 and 9 respectively. Show even has a composition of his own, in track 10, titled Self Infatuation.

Twinkle is an english song in which Show and Kumi Koda have a duet with. It is a fast paced song in which Show tried his hand at singing in english. Although it is a rather decent attempt from him due to his sometimes unclear pronounciation, full marks must be given to his courage and effort.

Track 9 is titled The King's Game. Simon Webbe has contributed to this song by rapping.

This latest album is also a collaboration of top notch composers like Malaysian singer/composer Gary Cao (track 2). This track is a combination of retro and easy listening dance number. Also watch out for track 7, where this song is specially tailored for Show by Queen of J-Pop, Ayumi Hamasaki's specially assigned composer. Reowned composer Lim has also contributed to this album in track 3 titled Perfect Man. Perfect Man has a R and B type of feel in which Show has executed very well in his previous albums.

The most catchy song of this album should be track 1, titled Jing Wu Men. Watch out for this music video (if you have the chance to catch it) for the reason why the media has given him the title as Taiwanese representation of Rain. Show is reowned for his superb dancing skills and stage presence. He has truly earned the nickname as 'Wu Tai Xiao Ba Wang'.

Show is an extremely hardworking entertainer who never fails to give 100% in whatever he does, whether in singing, hosting and acting. He has been in the entertainment scene since young and has never looked back since.

Keep a lookout for this potential king of Chinese Pop. His level of star power has been raising higher and higher...... .

Something to highlight.......

It was reported recently in the papers that another young man has died in his sleep last friday.

Doctor Toh, 32 years old, was pronounced dead at 8.56am at Tan Tock Seng Hospital after his wife failed to wake him up from his sleep. He is the fourth young man in less than a month to die suddenly during his sleep.

What exactly causes a person to die suddenly during his sleep? Doctors still do not have any clue to this issue.

On 24th October, Danil Shagimardanov ( 16 years old student) died in his sleep of cardio-respiratory failure. 3 days later, Dr Christopher Lim, 35 years old, died suddenly due to a seizure in the early morning hours.

On 13th November, Soh Chee Yong, 25 years old, failed to wake up to meet a friend. Aside from nursing a cold, Mr Soh had no known ailments and exercised regularly.

Regarding about death of Dr Toh, his wife commented that her husband was an avid sportsman and exercised regularly. He was also quite fit and was not known to be suffering from any medical conditions.

His wife also added that her husband worked long hours, averaging 13 to 14 hours a day for six days a week, and will occasionally play a game of tennis and basketball with his friends if he has the time to do so.

When asked by the media to comment on the recent deaths, a spokesman from The Ministry of Health state that it is not in a position to do so.

My Opinion:

I think stress does play some part in these recent deaths. Due to our hectic lifestyles, we tend to take things way too seriously and will push ourselves without taking a breather.

In addition, the lack of regular exercise and an unbalanced diet will only worsen the condition of our health without us noticing it. Its like a time bomb waiting to explode....... .

I think the best thing for us to prevent this kind of unfortunate incident is to have a healthy diet, regular exercise, adequate rest and a positive mindset. We must also achieve a balance in our lifestyle, for example, finding something which you like to do so as to spend the time destressing, instead of worrying.

Lastly, I would like to say: learn to take things in your stride, and don't ever push yourself over the limit.

Take care and god bless.

Enough said.

Suzuki LC's view from the side....
Suzuki LC's view from the front

I have managed to download two pictures taken from my new purchased digital camera, so I would like to share this rather unique and retro looking car.

This car is called the LC. It is a tiny two seater concept model designed to resemble the company's first-ever car, the Suzulight.

The LC has a 660cc unit driving the front wheels through a four-speed automatic gearbox.

There are some decidedly retro touches in the cabin, ranging from semi-circular speedometer to plaid patterned seats. Even the chrome gearchange paddles on the steering wheel are designed to look like horn ring on old cars.

Suzuki currently has no plans to mass produce this rather unique car, so the only thing which you can do is to ogle to your heart's content at the Singapore Motorshow 2006 held at Suntec Singapore until Nov 19.

Besides the LC, there are also variety of cars, motorcycles and vehicle accessories being displayed at the motorshow.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $4 for children.

My Most Expensive Possession

After months of saving, scrimping for every cent and
controlling my spending budget, I would like to introduce to you my latest possession -- digital camera.

I have always wanted to buy a digital camera for a long time, but is unable to. First of all, the price is expensive. Secondly, I could not bear to part with my hard earned money by giving it away to the cashier in just a matter of seconds. Lastly, I have always classified having a digital camera as a luxury item.

How times have changed since. As a person who loves taking nice pictures when given the opportunity to do so, I normally find myself buying a disposable film camera.

Taking note of the advantages / disadvantages of a digital camera compared to a disposable fim one, I will rather go for the former.

Digital camera is much more affordable in the long run, as the quality is a lot of times better. You can also immediately review the pictures which you have taken on the spot, do some modifications like photo editing, direct transferring of pictures into your computer, sending picture e-mail attachments and much more!

Film camera does not have any of these functions. Moreover, picture quality is very bad. The only advantage is the price, which is a lot of times cheaper than having a digital camera. One point to take note: Image of the pictures developed on film cameras will fade over time. Why subject yourself to all this trouble where precious moments captured are lost?

After months of saving, considering the pros and cons, I have decided to get myself a Canon Digital Ixus 65 digital camera (see picture at top right corner). I like the big screen, user friendly functions and the clarity of the images being taken. Although this latest gadget of mine costs me $500 plus , I think it will be worth it in the long run. I can also download nice pictures into my blog and to share with people from all over the world.

However, please wait for me to learn how to upload the images into my computer. Well, that is another story...

Wish me luck!

An Unexpected Windfall......

Found myself $60 richer by the time I reached home yesterday, thanks to an e-mail (probably a hoax) from a lottery organisation. The e-mail states that I have won around 750,000 euros for a lottery draw that is conducted in Switzerland recently.

When I received this e-mail, I thought of deleting it straightaway as it was one of those junk mails in my inbox. I normally receive plenty of mails requesting me to claim / transfer millions of dollars from someone or some organisation, and I am getting really sick of it. What I did later was something quite unexpected.....

I click on the subject heading of the e-mail in order to read the contents. While scrolling down the mail, I saw some numbers, 7 to be exact. I thought to myself:" Since today(Monday) is Toto draw, why not I buy that set of numbers?" I jotted down the numbers on a piece of paper and rushed down to the betting outlet to place my bet.

Toto is a lottery draw held every Monday and Thursday. 7 numbers (additional number included) will be chosen in a pot of 45 numbers. This lottery game is a favourite among people as it can make them instant millionaires depending on the prize money. There will be a special annual $10 million plus draw held during the period of Chinese New Year.

When I reached home from work, I have almost forgotten about the lottery ticket which I have earlier purchased. It was near bedtime when I suddenly realised about it and started to check the result. To my amazement, I have won $60 (3 numbers + 1 additional number).

If you are curious about that set of numbers which have won me $60, here it is:

5, 7, 10, 14, 17, 18, 43

The result of the draw:

1, 7, 15, 18, 28, 43 (Additional number: 14)

Well, its an unexpected windfall from an unwelcome source.....

Trial and Error

Been spending most of my time trying to improve the appearance of my blog by adding something to it. I am not sure whether you readers have taken notice, but I think I am rather pleased by my effort so far.

As a technologically challenged person, I have some problems modifying the overall appearance of this blog. I have to add some extra programming codes for the Links Section for it to appear correctly and to my expectations.

I have always been very lousy at IT stuff. I know how to deal with the basics, like switching on / off the computer, checking, composing and replying to e-mails, surfing the internet and typing word documents. For more advanced stuff like troubleshooting, I am absolutely clueless and would urgently sound for help if the computer does not want to cooperate with me.

I think I have some issues with computer programming. I have learnt it briefly during my polytechnic days, but nothing really registered in my brain. My perception of programming is that they are strange characters trying to irritate the hell out of me... .

Well, I have to admit that through numerous trial and error, valuable time wasted and sacrificing my brain cells, I have finally managed to include the Links section in my blog (thank god!). I think that I almost mess up the whole layout of the programming codes that were being done up nicely for me in the first place.

Can you see this nice picture at the top of this posting? Yes, this picture suits the title of my blog and I have decided to use it as a symbol for it. I really like the design very much and the meaning it is trying to put across -- Powerful.

Uploading this picture is definitely easier than modifying the programming codes, and I am glad that everything has turned out fine and nothing drastic has happened so far so as to prevent me from contributing my postings.

In conclusion, I shall take this as a learning experience and to keep on improving on my so called "computer skills" so as to further enhance the apperance of my blog.

Watch this space..... for changes.

Movie Review: Texas Chainsaw Massacre (The Beginning)

Watched a rather gory movie last friday about a sadistic killer whose habit is to kill people by using a chainsaw. The title of this movie is called Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

The plot is simple: to kill as many people as possible. There is a free flow of blood in this movie and is definitely not for the faint hearted. I would like to suggest that you watched this movie with an empty stomach as the violent scenes are really very disgusting!

Be prepared for scenes of limbs being dismembered, throats being slit, bodies being battered to a bloody pulp, bloody scenes of killing, extreme violence and etc. Its a crimson mess of blood throughout the whole show.

The movie is 95 minutes long, maybe a tad too long for me to sit through a movie of this type... . I have to admit that after watching this movie, I don't seem to have anything special to discuss about in this posting, except that this show is one that will not be worth watching for in the first place.... .

* Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning is currently showing in cinemas and is rated R21 for its violence.

Details of the plot:

It's 1969. The conflict in Viet Nam has exploded to immeasurable proportions, and 18-year-old Dean Hill's number is up. Dean's brother Eric, who has already seen his share of combat, plans to take Dean to enlist in his beloved Marine Corps in hopes of keeping an eye on him rather than letting him take his chances at the local induction center. But Dean plans to confront Eric about dodging the draft after the boys and their respective girlfriends, Bailey and Chrissie, head across Texas for a final fling of serious fun.

Still from the movie: Matthew Bomer and Taylor Handley in a torture scene from the movie Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning

Rating: 2 stars out of 5 (We have had enough of movies that really seem to glorify violence: Examples like Saw, Hostel, See no evil.....)

Note: for fans that love to watch scenes of violence, blood and more blood being spilled.. .

My time is up.....

I think that when people are reaching some point in their life whereby it is of marriageable age, their parents will somehow feel that they have to do something to assist their kids. So, how do they do it? Some may indirectly drop hints, and some may take action in their own hands by arranging matchmaking sessions.

I think you will have some idea what this posting is about. Yes, I am reaching a stage in my life whereby my parents would love to see me settling down, have kids and to reach another point of my life where I have to undertake many responsibilities.... .

I am 26 years old, still single and have not been involved in any relationship in my life. Can I be categorised as the last living dinosaur on earth, or be put on display beside them in a museum? Well, I don't really think so. =) I think that there are some people out there who is in the same boat as me.

What really happen that trigger me to write this posting? Let me explain....

I was surfing the net and replying to e-mails just like some other normal day when my mum happened to steal a look at the title of my e-mail message that read "Greetings from Japan". Here is a conversation between two of us:

Mum: "You have Japanese friends?"
Me; "No, I have friends from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Usa, Russia and a lot more."
Mum: "How about Singapore?"
Me: "No."
Mum: "Why?"
Me: "I don't know."
Mum: "You have a picture of your Japanese friend?"
Me: "Here."
Mum: "Wow! So beautiful! How old is she?"
Me: "22."
Mum: "You know Japanese?"
Me: "I can understand a little."
Mum: "How do you write to them?"
Me: "In English."
Mum: "That's good, but why no Singapore friend?"
Me: "I don't know."
Mum: "You should make friends from Singapore, slowly ask them out for a meal or to the movies." "If they are suitable for you, then can consider to be your girlfriend."
Me: (Deadpan) "Ok."
Mum: "People your age are getting married already." "Some even have kids."
Me: "........." (Stunned)

My parents have been recently reminding me that my time is up. (Not my life, but my life as being single). I do not know what they will do in the future, but I think that its going to be quite drastic, maybe matchmaking session?

If you ask me whether will I be frightened at the prospect of me being a bachelor all my life, I have to admit that alarm bells are ringing in my head already.

I am a rather shy person and have little friends, therefore its hard for me to get in contact with girls. I can count with one hand the number of times I have been on a one to one "date" with a girl. The "date" will somehow be the first and last time that we have ever met.

What can I really do now? Shall I do something, or let nature takes its course? Where exactly is cupid anyway? Is he lazing around somewhere?

Lastly, I think that the best thing is to remain positive, make as many friends as possible, pray hard and continue praying hard. You just can't force this kind of marriage thing right?

Wilson

Music Album Review -- Genie Zhou Wen Xuan (Xi Guan)

Went to HMV at the Heeren yesterday to browse for Chinese music albums. Came across a sweet looking girl on the cover of the album. The name is Genie Zhou Wen Xuan.

I remember coming across this name in a Chinese variety programme (100% entertainment) that was being shown on channel U recently. This girl was taking part in a singing contest, her sweet voice and steady performance made me stood up and listen attentively.

Okay, back to the HMV episode. Without any moment of hesitation, I bought the album and listened to it straightaway. I have absolutely no regrets about parting with my twenty something dollars since it is a very nice piece of work from her.

I would like to recommend this album to you readers out there.

The mind is restless, spirit slowly weakening and the body is just too tired............

Is it a tad too early to categorise this blog as being a negative influence?

Well, I don't think so. I do not plan to let my blog to go into this direction. I want it to be energetic, full of enthusiasm and for my readers to be able to feel the positive energy surrounding them.

As you may have realised by now, the title of my blog is called Will Power. Why this name and not something else?
Well, let me explain by flipping the dictionary.....

Meaning of Will: Determination to do something and to fight or make an effort if someone or something tries to stop you.

Meaning of Power: Particular physical ability, skill, or opportunity to do something.
See the relationship between them? Yes, these two words are certainly related to the word "Positive".

Back to my current state of mind. As the title of this posting suggests, it is not good. I do not know the reason, but I have been feeling rather tired recently. I seem to lack the spring in my footstep, the drive to carry about the usual routines in life and the determination to start on whatever things which I am planning to do. Everything seems to be going through the motions for me right now..... .

Just what exactly is happening to me? Am I burnt out? Am I reaching a stage whereby everything seems to have little or no effect on me?

I am tired for most of the time and I think I can fall asleep within a minute once I closed my eyes. I can only experience some surge of enthusiasm at some time and everything will be back to its dull state after. I think I should be switching to some brand of batteries that starts with the letter 'E'. =)

I think the reason for my sluggishness is due to my work environment. Entering the office is like entering a warzone. Besides dealing with the immense workload, I have to deal with a rowdy circus of my work colleagues... . This group of people never fail to make my life seem bored. I wonder if you have such colleagues in your workplace?

Let me describe some of my so called "fantastic colleagues". There is one who is really a two headed snake. He will try to sow discord between people with his rather caustic tongue. He will spin stories that probably will interest Steven Spielberg. Why do he have to do this? For fun?

There is one who really looks like some malnourished kid. He thinks that he is really that good, and will impose his views on people. He has only 1 mission, and that is to make people conform to his way of thinking. If he does not succeed, he will turn against that particular person.

There is another one who laughs out loud without any indication of happiness. This is called laughing for the sake of laughing. She just wants someone to know that she still has a sense of humour. In addition to that, she is a person that can be considered as extremely petty. Please don't cross her path, or you will be in her list of condemned personnel. She will then summon whatever manpower she has to make your life a living hell.

Lastly, this person is known as the typical backstabber. He / she will appear as an angel in front of you, dishing out valuable advice. Please be careful, as that person will be collating comments from other colleagues about you. After which, he /she will be secretly releasing what is known as knives that target mainly at your back.

That is what I am experiencing in my office right now. People who appear as some angels in front of you, but are actually devils when your back is turned against them. They will think of ways to get you out... .

What can't people be truthful to each other? Where is the so called trust between people? Whatever happened to this phrase, He's ain't heavy, he's my brother?

How do I deal with these devils? I minimise contact with them unless necessary, do my own work and not to get involved in any form of politics. Why put extra burden on yourself by getting involved in all those stupid things?

Well, I think that is all. You just have to be on your highest alert to catch any form of knives that is destined on your back. I have a suggestion, and that is to wear a full body metal armour like those knights in the olden times to prevent any more injuries to your already fragile back.

Ouch! I have been stabbed in the back again! Just kidding actually! Hope to post some rather positive news in the future.

PS: To those potential backstabbers / crazy office clowns out there, please be reminded of this word "Retribution".

Watch This Space......

Hello Fellow Readers:

Thanks for visiting my blog. I hope that you will have a nice time here.

I think I need to give an introduction about myself:

I am Wilson from Singapore. I am a 26 years old chinese male currently working in the Insurance Industry. My hobbies include reading, running, watching movies, making friends and soccer.

I have been a Manchester United fan since 1993. I like the Red Devils because of their excellent attacking play on the pitch, their endless energy, strong determination and a never say die attitude. The best moment of me as an United fan is when they defied all odds to win the treble in year 1999.

The 1999 European Champions League final match between Manchester United and Bayern Munich rates as one that will remain in my mind forever. Just when it seems that the Red Devils treble dream is over, something extraordinary happened during the final moments of the match. Teddy Sheringham equalised for United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer scoring the dramatic winner by sticking his leg out and making contact with the ball from a David Beckham's corner kick, much to the dismay of the Bayern Munich players.

Besides soccer, I am currently making friends through penpals. I have penpals from Japan, China, Russia, United States, Korea, Canada and etc. I hope to make friends from all over the world, to acquire more knowledge about their countries lifestyles and cultures. I believe that life is a journey of learning and exploring, and we should constantly upgrade ourselves when we have the opportunities to do so. For interested parties to become my penpals, please feel free to e-mail me.

I am a complete newbie in this world of blogging. I hope that you readers will give me some valuable comments / opinions in order to improve on my blog. I appreciate all feedbacks being given to me.

Lastly, I hope that this blog will be a place where people can:
1) communicate freely
2) express their opinions
3) learn more about the happenings all over the world
4) know more about me as a person

Please watch this space for exciting times ahead..... . Thank you once again.

Wilson
