Nani Wants Move?

Nani's inability to fill the void left by Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United has led to the Portugal international exploring the possibilities of a move to Spain or Italy in the January transfer window.

After an encouraging start to the season Nani's form has become such a concern for the United manager Sir Alex Ferguson that the former Sporting Lisbon player has been offered as bait in a possible cash-plus-player exchange with Benfica for the Argentina international Angel Di Maria.

Benfica informed the Premier League champions they did not want to lose their best player midway through the season unless one of his many suitors, Manchester City included, met a release clause of around £30m in his contract.

Nani is also reluctant to move back to Portugal but his agent, Jorges Mendes, has sounded out possible buyers in Spain and Italy.

Berba Hails Strike Partner

Rather than bask in the glory of firing United's third goal at Hull, Dimitar Berbatov was the first to acknowledge the brilliant assist from strike partner Wayne Rooney, who inspired the Reds to a 3-1 triumph at the KC Stadium.

Rooney had put the visitors in front with a close-range finish seconds before the break, but inadvertedly handed the Tigers a route back into the match with a poor back pass to Tomasz Kuszczak which eventually led to a Hull penalty.

Rooney set about rectifying his error straight away and laid on both of United's second half goals. Berbatov had nothing but praise for the England international, who he described as "unstoppable."

"Wayne did fantastic for us - we were joking in the dressing room that he had three assists to his name!" Berbatov told MUTV. "He bounced back after their goal and made both the second and third ones which was great.

"If he can keep playing the way we know he can then I don't think anyone can stop him. He's still young and the future is ahead of him."

The victory helped United reduce Chelsea's lead at the league summit to two points and Berbatov is convinced the Reds will finish the season in top spot.

"I think we are in a great position. There are still a lot of games to go and it will be difficult, but in the end I think we'll end on top," he insisted. "We've had a difficult time with injuries, but we still have a great squad and players are starting to come back and we will go on a winning run now.

"The boss knows what to do in terms of changing things when he needs to and I'm sure we'll finish on top at the end of the season."

Wes Salutes Stand-ins

Wes Brown was swift to salute the work of United's defensive stand-ins after making a triumphant return to the Reds' backline at Hull.

A dizzying defensive merry-go-round has seen countless players deputise out of position in recent weeks. Although the Reds slipped up against Aston Villa and Fulham, three wins out of five marked a respectable return for a patched-up United side.

On Sunday, the Reds' platform for victory at the KC Stadium was an outstanding dual display from Brown and Nemanja Vidic at the heart of the defence, but Brown paid tribute for the players who made way to accommodate the more natural defenders.

"They've been telling us to hurry up and get fit," he told MUTV. "But they've done well. I can't remember (a spate of injuries) like it. We've handled it pretty well, we've got a good squad.

"Like the gaffer has said, though, if you do it so many times then you'll get caught out eventually, so it was good that me and Vida were back today. Hopefully soon we'll have Jonny (Evans), Gaz (Neville) and Rio (Ferdinand) back too and we'll be back to a full strength squad."

With several players still sidelined, the Reds were made to sweat for three vital points at the KC Stadium, and Brown felt that the champions earned their victory.

"Hull made it tough for us with a good performance, but we did well in the end," he said. "It was difficult. They pressured us and made it very hard. Then they got back to 1-1 and it was up or down really.

"They had a good little spell, but we managed to nick another one and from then on I thought we were comfortable. In the first half they had some good shots, Tom made some good saves but all in all I thought it was a good game and we played well. We had to perform to win the game."

A Step In The Right Direction

Sir Alex Ferguson feels the Reds' victory at Hull represents a big step forward.

Goals from Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov, either side of an Andy Dawson own goal, secured a much-needed three points for United and cut Chelsea's lead at the Barclays Premier League summit to just two points. The boss was delighted with the Reds' battling win at the KC Stadium and highlighted the return of Wes Brown and Nemanja Vidic as another big plus point to the day.

"Today is a step forward for us," Sir Alex told MUTV. "We've got the win which is very important as we're entering a crucial stage, and we've got two of our centre-backs back which will make a big difference to us. And they were absolutely magnificent.

"We have to give credit to Hull because they got really stuck into us and put tackles in everywhere. They gave a lot of fouls away which that had an affect on our momentum, but you know that games like this away from home will be tough."

It was an eventful afternoon for Wayne Rooney who was involved in all four goals. Having put the Reds in front on the stroke of half-time, it was his poor back pass which led to Hull's equaliser from the penalty spot. Rooney was to have the last word, however, as he created both United's second and third goals.

"He was a threat all day," declared Sir Alex. "He's a natural winner and his desire is inborn. Yes, he made a mistake, but aside from that one bad moment, he was exceptionally good. He would have been more sick than anyone by his mistake, but he's rectified it in a nice way."

Rooney Relieved By Redemption

Wayne Rooney admitted that he was relieved and delighted in equal measure after United's hard-fought victory at Hull City.

Having given the Reds the lead, the striker then found Hull's Craig Fagan with an ill-advised back-pass; the first link in a chain of events which drew the hosts level on the hour mark.

Rooney channelled his ire positively, though, and teed up Andy Dawson's own goal and Dimitar Berbatov's late clincher, and he admitted post-match that he was delighted to have secured such quick redemption.

"Obviously when they got the equaliser it was a mistake by myself, but thankfully we got the win," he told Sky Sports. "I don't think the manager would've been too pleased if we hadn't at the end.

"It's the first time it's ever happened to me. It wasn't a nice feeling. I didn't want to let the lads down and at the time it looked like that. it was more what the manager would say, probably!"

Rooney conceded that victory was imperative for the champions after recent setbacks against Aston Villa and Fulham, and he was happy with the way Hull were picked off as the game swung from end to end at the KC Stadium.

"We knew it was a big game for us today," he admitted. "It was quite open. Hull committed a lot of men forward and it did leave us spaces to counter-attack when we got the opportunity. We counter-attacked with some good breaks and thankfully got two goals. As I said, I'm thankful we got the win in the end."

Red Devils Hold Off Battling Tigers

Manchester United edged an error-strewn encounter with Hull to close to within two points of leaders Chelsea in the race for the Premier League title.

Wayne Rooney drew first blood for United on the stroke of half-time, but later made a calamitous back-pass which paved the way for a Hull penalty.

Craig Fagan levelled from the spot, but Rooney made amends when his low cross led to an Andy Dawson own goal.

Dimitar Berbatov then sealed the win after a pin-point pass from Rooney.

At a stage of the season when champions United traditionally begin to hit their stride, the victory closed the gap on Chelsea after they were held to a goalless draw at Birmingham on Saturday.

But for all Rooney's influence, Sir Alex Ferguson's men - who arrived on Humberside in wounded-animal mode after suffering two defeats in their previous three Premier League outings - were rarely at their best.

In fairness that had much to do with Hull, whose industry and commitment proved formidable obstacles despite some hairy moments for goalkeeper Boaz Myhill, most notably when he miscued a first-half clearance.

Having seen his team charged by the Football Association after last weekend's mass confrontation at Arsenal, Phil Brown had looked to foster a siege mentality among his players in the build-up.

And his players clearly bought into the billing of unfairly-punished underdogs as they absorbed United's strong start and were unlucky to be denied an early penalty.

Fagan found Richard Garcia with a precise through-ball, but as the Australia international raced into the area he was upended by a sliding tackle from Nemanja Vidic that prompted furious protests from Hull.

It was Alan Wiley, the referee whose fitness was questioned by Ferguson after United's 2-2 draw against Sunderland earlier this season, who came to the visitors' rescue.

Wiley saw nothing wrong with the challenge, but no sooner had he waved away the complaints than Hull were at United again, Seyi Olofinjana forcing a fine reflex save from Tomasz Kuszczak.

Another opportunity to open the scoring went begging when Olofinjana put Stephen Hunt through only for the Republic of Ireland midfielder to shoot wide.

As the misses mounted for Hull, the feeling grew that there would be a price to pay against a United side desperate to bounce back following last weekend's 3-0 defeat at Fulham.

The return of a trio of defenders in Rafael da Silva, Vidic and Wes Brown provided a platform for United to go forward with greater confidence, and although their attacking fluency was never at its best, they nonetheless offered plenty of threat.

Giggs twice went close early on, volleying on to the roof of the net before rippling the side-netting with a free-kick, while Rooney and Rafael both forced acrobatic saves from Myhill.

The danger was clear and, sure enough, with the interval beckoning Darren Fletcher swung in a near-post cross from the right flank, Giggs deflected it to Rooney, and the lurking England man prodded home from close-range.

With the hour mark approaching, however, Rooney gifted Hull a reprieve, directing a woeful back-pass to Kuszczak which was intercepted by Fagan.

Da Silva bundled over Jozy Altidore from the resulting cross, and Fagan shot unerringly past Kuszczak to ensure that there would be no repeat of Geovanni's missed spot kick against Arsenal last week.

Sensing the possibility of a win that would lift them clear of the relegation zone, Hull poured forward in search of a winner, but their enterprise was to prove their undoing.

With 17 minutes remaining, Giggs led a United counter-attack, slotting the ball through for Rooney to direct a low cross towards substitute Ji-Sung Park which the sliding Dawson could only direct into his own net.

And Rooney was once again at the heart of the action as United put the polish on their win with eight minutes remaining, directing a slide-rule pass through the legs of Anthony Gardner that enabled Berbatov to score with a tap-in.

Benfica Reject Di Maria Bid

Benfica have rejected a bid for prized asset Angel Di Maria from Manchester United, according to reports in Portugal.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a host of Europe's top clubs this season following some stand-out displays in Benfica's midfield.

The bid from United was said to be in the region of €10million, with out-of-favour winger Nani also offered in exchange.

However, Portuguese radio station TSF have revealed that Benfica president Luis Filipe Vieira has dismissed the bid with the club holding out for considerably more money.

The midfielder is said to have a €40million release fee clause in his current contract, but many believe Benfica will do business once they receive a bid in the region of €30million.

However, the Portuguese giants are reluctant to sell in January with the club aware that a successful World Cup with Argentina next summer could see Di Maria's valuation rocket.

Reds Defenders Honoured

Two United players have been rewarded for their form with a place in the FIFPro World XI for 2009.

Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra have both been selected, following a poll of professional players around the globe.

The pair performed to the highest of standards during the last year, with both making key contributions to the Reds' record-breaking run of clean sheets that continued until March.

This latest accolade rounds off a successful year for Vidic in particular; the Serbian was voted United’s Player of the Year in May for his solid defensive work as well as some important goals at the other end of the pitch.

Former Reds winger Cristiano Ronaldo is also in the team, largely due to his displays while still at United in a third consecutive title-winning season.

The only club with more inclusions in the FIFProXI were Champions League victors Barcelona, with four players named in the side.

The full team was as follows:
Iker Casillas (Real Madrid); Daniel Alves (Barcelona), John Terry (Chelsea), Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United), Patrice Evra (Manchester United); Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Xavi and Andres Iniesta (both Barcelona); Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Fernando Torres (Liverpool).

Neville: Race Is Hotting Up

Gary Neville believes the 2009/10 Premier League title race could be the most competitive in years.

The veteran defender has helped Manchester United to take the crown in each of the last three seasons, but the Red Devils' grip on the trophy could be slipping.

Chelsea lead the way heading into Christmas, with Arsenal, Aston Villa and Tottenham still well in the hunt.

Neville feels the increased competition in the English top flight is a positive sign and is adamant that United and Chelsea will not be allowed to pull clear of the chasing pack.

"I've been saying all along that it's not a two-horse race - it can change so quickly," said the experienced full-back.

"We've dropped points, Chelsea have dropped points, and it can close up at the top very quickly."

He added: "I think the Premier League is getting stronger, with teams like Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Villa spending a lot of money.

"But it's always been the case that all teams can beat one another in England."

Defenders Key To Title Bid

Sir Alex admits life at United could be tough until the club’s defensive injury crisis eases.

The Reds slumped to a 3-0 defeat against Fulham on Saturday, with Sir Alex again forced to play midfielders in the heart of United’s backline.

Seven defenders were unavailable for selection at Craven Cottage – Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans, Gary Neville, Wes Brown, John O’Shea and Rafael are all sidelined – so Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher reprised their central defensive roles. Alongside them was young Belgian defender Ritchie De Laet, making just his sixth appearance at senior level.

And although United’s makeshift defences have largely coped well in recent weeks, Saturday’s reshuffled backline struggled and United suffered a fifth league defeat of the season.

“I hope that loss doesn’t prove too damaging,” Sir Alex told MUTV afterwards. “In other words, I hope it doesn’t cost us the league.

“There was a fragility at the back today, but we couldn’t do anything about that. I have sympathy for my players because it’s difficult for midfielders to play as centre-backs and Ritchie De Laet’s only 20 years of age so he’s not yet got the experience you need for these type of matches.

“The players are feeling a little bit sorry for themselves at the moment because of the situation they find themselves in. But I think it’s obvious that if we get our defenders back we’ll be okay. We need to them back to give us a proper chance of challenging for the league.”

Sir Alex went on to reveal United’s physios and medical staff are “working over-time” to get players off the treatment table and back on the pitch. Some defenders – Jonny Evans and John O'Shea – aren't expected to return until the end of January but others should be back in action before the New Year.

On Friday morning the manager told reporters that Gary Neville and Rafael could return for the Reds’ trip to Hull City on 27 December, while Wes Brown may be fit for the home game against Wigan Athletic two days later.

Difficult Day For Depleted Reds

Sir Alex Ferguson rued "a soft goal" and "a killer" strike in the aftermath of defeat at Fulham.

While the manager acknowledged the impact of United's ongoing injury crisis, he also felt aggrieved at the way the Reds gifted a breakthrough to the home side. Paul Scholes' uncharacteristic error enabled Danny Murphy to step forward and despatch a shot past Tomasz Kuszczak, who slipped in the process of trying to save it.

"We lost a terribly soft goal for the first one and that gave them a platform to build on," admitted Sir Alex on MUTV.

"It was important for them and it was a bad one for us. It was an uphill fight after that, and then the second goal right after half-time (scored by Bobby Zamora) killed the game. That was a killer for us. We didn't anticipate that."

Coming just seconds after the restart, Zamora's strike made it difficult to assess what Sir Alex might have said to his team at half-time in tactical terms. With United now trailing by two goals, the boss felt compelled to change his personnel - sending on Dimitar Berbatov and Fabio for midfielder Darron Gibson and the inexperienced Ritchie De Laet.

"When we went further behind, we had to change and go to a back four - with young Fabio at right-back, and Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick at centre-backs - because we had to chase the game," Sir Alex reflected.

"The referee made a poor decision for the third goal (it came from a free-kick) but by then I think it was very difficult for us. We couldn’t get behind Fulham at all, they defended very well, they were organised.... it was a difficult day for us really."

Cottagers Thrash Sorry Red Devils

Bobby Zamora's golden spell of form continued as Fulham cruised past a desperately disappointing Manchester United at Craven Cottage.

Zamora - touted for an England call-up in some quarters - scored his 10th goal of a prolific season and was Fulham's spearhead as they gave an injury-hit United side a harrowing afternoon.

Danny Murphy, a scourge of United when at Liverpool and now again with Fulham, put the skids under United with a low finish after 22 minutes and the champions, with Michael Owen anonymous up front, never looked like mounting a recovery.

Zamora was on the scoresheet seconds after the interval when he provided a comprehensive finish from Clint Dempsey's header, and Damien Duff's powerful drive completed a hugely-deserved victory for Roy Hodgson's side after 75 minutes.

But it was Zamora who took the honours as he terrorised a makeshift United rearguard, with Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick pressed into service in unaccustomed roles.

The striker has had a chequered relationship with Fulham's fans, but there was no doubting he has won over his critics and he was greeted with a well-earned standing ovation when he was substituted in injury time.

United, under-strength or not, were awful and fell woefully short of taking advantage of an opportunity to put pressure on Chelsea and Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

Sir Alex Ferguson was without Nemanja Vidic, sidelined by a calf injury, and Ryan Giggs was also out with a hamstring problem. How the champions missed them.

Tomasz Kuszczak rescued United after 17 minutes with an instinctive one-handed save from Zoltan Gera after Zamora chested the ball into his path 12 yards out.

But the goalkeeper should have done better when Fulham took the lead five minutes later.

Paul Scholes was guilty of conceding possession 25 yards out and Murphy - scorer of Fulham's opener in their 2-0 home victory over United last season - sent a low shot past Kuszczak, who reacted late to the danger.

Scholes was then guilty of more carelessness on the ball that almost saw Fulham double their lead 14 minutes before half-time. Gera was able to find space on the right flank, but Zamora could only direct a header wide under close attention from Fletcher.

Ferguson's hopes of a fast start to the second half were in shreds within seconds of the restart as Fulham swept forward instantly to double their lead. Duff's cross was met by Dempsey at the far post, and he set up Zamora to hammer past Kuszczak.

United made a double change after 57 minutes, with Ritchie de Laet and Darron Gibson making way for Fabio da Silva and Dimitar Berbatov.

Owen had suffered a miserable afternoon, starved of any meaningful service and unable to make the slightest impact on events, and it was no surprise when he was replaced by Danny Welbeck.

If the move was designed to revive United, it failed and Fulham extended their lead after 75 minutes when Duff cashed in on Zamora's excellent lay-off to strike a crisp finish low past Kuszczak.

There was still time for the keeper to deny a rampant Zamora one more time before referee Howard Webb put United out of their misery.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson:
"It gives us an awful lot of pleasure. We were fortunate in that we played against a very wounded United but we couldn't do more than try to take advantage of that.

"The reward is a result of the hard work we put in week after week in training and matches - it's not just because we hyped ourselves up for one superhuman effort.

"Before Bobby gets seriously considered for and England call-up he has a lot of work to do. But if Fabio Capello wants to look at him he know where he is.

"I will never push a player in the direction of a national team coach but If he needs any information on Bobby I'm happy to help out."

Evra Greets Draw

Patrice Evra gives us his view on the last 16 draw with Milan, and the prospect of playing against ex-Red David Beckham...

I think when we play against Milan they will be amazing and exciting games.

It’s not an easy draw because Milan have a lot of experience in the competition. We just need to remember what happened three years ago and make sure we use that experience to win the two games. I think we are ready to play against AC Milan.

I remember it was a very frustrating tie. We won 3-2 at home but we didn’t play very well. In the second game I was suspended and watched it on TV. It was very difficult to see my team lose 3-0 in that way. After that game we had more experience and we won the year after. We want to do the same again by using our experience. Now we are ready for that type of game.

I am happy for Beckham because he did a lot for Manchester United and I know he wanted to play again at Old Trafford. I will say welcome home to him but I will make sure he doesn’t have an easy game! I like him because I have met him and he is a good person, a real gentleman. He’s a professional and that is why Milan wanted him. I like that type of player and he has one of the best right feet in the world. However, I will make sure he has a bad game!

I’m sure all his old team-mates who are still here are looking forward to welcoming him back, but I’m looking forward more to playing against Milan rather than just David Beckham, because Milan are more than just one man. When we played Barcelona everyone was talking to me about Messi, but I was just thinking about their whole team. I’m happy for him but I will concentrate on winning the game.

We are confident that we can reach our third final in a row. Our aim is to win it every year. I remember my target was to win the Champions League at least three times in my career. I’ve already won it once but I’ve also lost two finals. I’m still upset at losing those finals, especially last year. I will try to use my anger to make sure we get there again, but this time go one better and come back with the trophy.

Patrice was talking to ManUtd.com, BBC Radio, PA Sport and Key 103.

Champions League Round of 16: Man. United To Meet AC Milan

United will meet Milan in the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.

The Reds will travel to San Siro on Tuesday 16 February to face a side likely to include former Old Trafford star David Beckham. The second leg will be played in Manchester on Wednesday 10 March.

The sides have met eight times in European competition, most recently at the semi-final stage in the 2006/07 competition when the Italians triumphed 5-3 on aggregate.

Sir Alex said: "We've come up against AC Milan many times in the quarter and semi-finals so it'll be a fantastic setting for two great clubs and we're very much looking forward to it."

Elsewhere, defending champions Barcelona meet Stuttgart, while Jose Mourinho will return to Chelsea with Internazionale. Arsenal were paired with FC Porto.

Full draw:
Stuttgart v Barcelona
Olympiakos v Bordeaux
Internazionale v Chelsea
Bayern Munich v Fiorentina
CSKA Moscow v Sevilla
Olympique Lyonnais v Real Madrid
FC Porto v Arsenal
AC Milan v United

Giggs Agrees New Contract

Ryan Giggs has agreed a new contract which will tie him to United until at least June 2011.

The 36-year-old, a veteran of over 800 games for the Reds, has been in scintillating form this season and, according to Sir Alex Ferguson, fully merits the reward of his new deal.

“Ryan deserves a new contract and I am sure he will play for another two years," said the manager. "His form is fantastic at the moment and he is playing some of his best football.”

Giggs himself is very pleased, and is typically looking to the future.

“I am delighted that I have agreed one more year," said the winger.

"I am enjoying my football more than ever and I am looking forward to hopefully winning more trophies with United."

The new deal will extend Ryan's career beyond the 20th anniversary of his United debut.

Anderson Hitting Top Form

Anderson has hit a rich vein of form in recent weeks and Sir Alex Ferguson says the Brazilian midfielder can now kick on and become a top player.

The Brazilian had a relatively slow start to his third season at Old Trafford, but he's come into form of late with some commanding midfield performances.

"Midfield is the hardest area for our young players to progress because we have some excellent players operating there," said Sir Alex, in his column for United Review.

"But Anderson has certainly cranked up the contest for places after hitting great form. He took his time - he's only 21, remember! - but he has settled and matured."

Sir Alex has a difficult enough task as it is selecting his midfield when everyone is fully fit, and it's even harder to try and contain Anderson's enthusiasm.

"The competition has not dimmed his self-belief, which is important," added the boss. "He has a Brazilian belief in his own ability and he is going to become a top player.

"He is flying at the moment and he certainly wants to play. In fact, he has a face on him like a bag of tripe when I don't play him."

Reds Set To Swoop For Serbian Starlet

Manchester United are targeting young Serbian central defender Uros Cosic - seen by his club CSKA Moscow as potentially a bigger talent than Nemanja Vidic.

The 17-year-old may move to Old Trafford next year, despite CSKA’s desire to keep him, admitted club president Yevgeni Giner.

So highly is he rated that the Moscow outfit has enlisted the help of Kremlin president Dmitry Medvedev in a bid to grant him Russian citizenship.

“I must stress that we would like to keep Cosic”, said Giner. "We even offered him Russian citizenship. It now depends upon the Presdent Medvedev whether it is granted or not. I have not seen such a great central defender before, not to mention that he is only 17. But Manchester United would also love to have him. They have already made several attempts to approach me about him, asking if I was ready to negotiate. They can see - the boy is going to grow into a bigger star than Vidic.”

Obertan: I Was Made For England

Gabriel Obertan has hit the ground running since making his long-awaited United debut in late October. The Frenchman is now hoping to make further progress, following his first Barclays Premier League start against Wolves...

So Gabriel, were you pleased with your first league start?
In the first half I was much better because I slowed down a bit. It was my first league start and I'm quite happy but I know I have to improve.

Were you nervous?
Not really, because Pat [Evra] was behind me and everyone was encouraging me to play well. I just wanted to play my game and show my qualities and hopefully I did that.

How much does it help to play on the same side as your friend Pat?
He knows how I play so it's easier for me. He can place me when we're defending, it's very helpful for me.

Is English football what you expected?
Yes. It’s quick – there’s a lot of space behind defenders. And every team wants to win the game when they play. In France, sometimes the first thing the team wants to do is not lose. But here, they all want to win. That makes the game more open and you have more chances. Every game is difficult. Even in the [4-1] win against Portsmouth it was difficult. Every game is different, and each one is like a combat, it’s a fight.

Have you had to adapt your game?
Maybe a bit, but I think my qualities were made for this type of football. So it was quite easy to fit in here. I was built for English football.

Are there any players you’ve modelled your game on?
When I was younger I liked Thierry Henry… then I liked Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo.

What's your favourite bit of trickery?
I learned to play football in the street with my friends. And when you play street football, the things you want to do are all the tricks like nutmegs. My favourite is probably the stepover. So I like doing tricks - but only if they are effective. There's no point doing it if there's nothing at the end of it.

United have a tradition of wingers – are you an out-and-out winger?
I think for now I am a true winger. But maybe in the future I could play forward or striker. I like one-v-one – I’m quick and I like to run in behind defenders and create opportunities.

When teams put a lot of people behind the ball, does that make the winger’s job even more important?
Yes. I think wingers are very important in modern football. In the game against Besiktas [at OT in late November] it was quite difficult because all the players were like defenders. I think the winger’s role is important in that type of game.

You've already built up a good rapport with the fans...
I’m very pleased by the way they have supported me. When I hear them singing my name, the only thing I want to do is give them something back. It’s like a big boost behind you, like someone pushing you on to make that pass or score that goal. It’s inspiring.

You usually switch wings during the game. Is that something you’ve been told to do, or does it come naturally?
I just do it. If I have an opportunity to be efficient or help someone, I’ll do it.

V's For Victory

Antonio Valencia's improvement and Nemanja Vidic's power at setpieces were heralded after the pair put United in the comfort zone against Wolves.

The visitors worked hard to choke the champions, even after Wayne Rooney punished Ronald Zubar's handball by drilling home his 13th goal of the season from the penalty spot.

"We got a break with the penalty kick," admitted Sir Alex Ferguson on MUTV. "I think Wolves made it difficult for us with a good team effort. They tackled everywhere, they pressed the ball, and made it hard for us to get our continuity.

"It was comfortable in the end though. Vidic's goal settled us. He's probably our best threat at setpieces because he'll attack the ball bravely and his header was very good.

"There were one or two nice bits of football in the second half, including a marvellous third goal from Valencia. It was a terrific finish. Antonio's now got six goals and he can still improve on that because he's a very good finisher as we often see in training.

Elaborating on his Ecuadorian, Sir Alex added: "Antonio's improvement is tremendous. He's expansive in his game and he's expressing himself really well. We like to see young players coming here to develop. He's improving all the time and we're very pleased."

Valencia's strike was set up brilliantly by Dimitar Berbatov, who hooked the ball over his shoulder into the winger's path. Although the Bulgarian had a largely frustrating night, this flash of genius did not go unnoticed on the United bench.

"Only a player like Berbatov, with the imagination and skill he's got, could produce something like that," praised Sir Alex.

Stopper Salutes Stand-ins

Tomasz Kuszczak was full of praise for his makeshift defence as the Reds kept a valuable clean sheet en route to victory over Wolves.

The Polish international goalkeeper was resolutely protected by his back four of Ritchie De Laet, Michael Carrick, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, plus substitute Darren Fletcher, with Wolves reduced to just one shot on target all evening. Despite the merry-go-round of personnel before him, Tomasz was impressed by their work.

"It's confusing of course, we don't always have enough time to find composure, but we played well today," Kuszczak told MUTV. "Michael Carrick, Fletch and Ritchie did really well. Of course it's difficult for them, but we didn't concede and that's most important.

"It's a new position for Michael (at centre-back) but he did well and we have to be happy that even with so many injuries we still have players who can do the job properly."

Tuesday's victory moved the Reds level on points with league leaders Chelsea, who visit rock-bottom Portsmouth on Wednesday evening. Although Carlo Ancelotti's side are overwhelming favourites to take all three points, Kuszczak insists that the Premier League can throw up shocks at any time.

"Every single game is difficult," he said. "Aston Villa showed that on Saturday. Today we played better, we made more chances and scored goals. Chelsea know they must win and in the Premier League, the first team can be beaten by the last team. There's still a lot of games to play and I'm sure things will change."

Man. United Cruise Past Wolves To Go Level At Top

Mick McCarthy's vastly-changed Wolves survived for half an hour before losing out to a lacklustre Manchester United.

With 10 new faces from the team that beat Tottenham, Wolves fell behind to a Wayne Rooney penalty after Ronald Zubar handled Darron Gibson's corner.

Defender Nemanja Vidic soon made up for a wild volley by nodding in United's second from another Gibson corner.

An uninventive Wolves rarely threatened and Antonio Valencia fired in the third after clever work by Dimitar Berbatov.

After their shock defeat by Aston Villa, United boss Sir Alex Ferguson will be pleased with the three points which draw them level on points with leaders Chelsea, but the flat performance might give him a few concerns.

The talking point before kick-off could have been Ferguson's previous 899 league games in charge, but instead it was the visitors' surprising line-up that caught the attention.

After Saturday's 1-0 win at Tottenham, the Wolves team sheet revealed 10 changes by manager McCarthy with goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann the only survivor from their White Hart Lane heroics.

Premier League rules state that clubs should "field a full strength team", although the governing body told BBC Radio 5 live it was unlikely they would launch any investigation into the Old Trafford match.

These are worrying times for Wolves with this defeat pushing them back into the bottom three after Bolton saw off West Ham on Tuesday night.

Despite regulars Stephen Ward, Jody Craddock, Richard Stearman and Nenad Milijas all being absent from the squad, McCarthy's team of unfamiliar faces justified their selection at the start as they shut out United's strike partnership of Rooney and the recalled Berbatov.

After firing a one-on-one at Hahnemann's legs and then seeing a deflected shot dribble just wide of the post, Rooney finally got the all-important opener with a penalty on the half-hour to settle the early jitters.

Gibson's corner looped into the box and, as Zubar leaped with the towering Vidic, the Wolves defender flapped with his arm and referee Steve Bennett pointed to the spot.

The diving Hahnemann could do nothing to prevent the England striker hammering in his 12th league goal of the season and his 20th in the Premier League in 2009.

Just before the interval, the league champions doubled the lead after Vidic made up for an earlier high-and-wide volley that sailed over the bar.

It was another Gibson corner that created further havoc in the defence as the Serbian defender nodded the ball down and saw it squirm through the American keeper's hands.

The tepid exchanges continued in the second half and it was the visitors who almost pulled one back with a rare attack, but George Friend could only blaze over.

It was time for a change in personnel and McCarthy stoked up his attacking options by replacing the hard-working but largely ineffective Stefan Maierhofer with Chris Iwelumo.

Wolves soon conceded a third though, thanks to some trickery from Berbatov.

The Bulgarian picked up the ball on the right after a raking pass from Paul Scholes and hooked the ball over his head to Valencia, who hammered in a half-volley.

United's victory was a canter in the end, and after the Wolves fans chanted "we want our money back" it will be interesting to see which 11 they will be watching when they come up against fellow-strugglers Burnley at the weekend.

Giggs - I'll Go Before Fergie

Ryan Giggs has revealed he expects to retire before Sir Alex Ferguson and the Manchester United legend has reiterated he will not play for another club.

The Welshman, who turned 36 last month, is the club's record appearance holder and is likely to be offered the chance to spend 20 years in the United first team.

Ferguson confirmed last week that he will be offering Giggs a new contract through to 2011 and the midfielder is open to extending his playing career.

"It is a case of seeing how I feel at the end of each season," Giggs told The Times.

"I'll have to ask myself if I am still enjoying it and motivated to come in to training each day.
"When I finish with United, that's it. I won't play for another club."

However, even if Giggs does agree to prolong his playing career at Old Trafford for a further season, he does not expect to outlast his manager.

"I think it will be me," replied Giggs when asked who he thought would retire first.

"The manager is as good as ever and will go on for a long time. I can still see him as manager of United in five years' time, easily, because as long as he is healthy he will have the desire to carry on.

"He has a great team around him, he has his passions away from the game and can get away with his horse racing. When he comes back to football he is refreshed, and I know he still has that desire."

Having spent his entire playing career under Ferguson's guidance, Giggs believes the United boss has mellowed in recent years.

He added: "Our relationship has never been better. It has evolved.

"He speaks to me like a friend and asks for my advice, which gives me tremendous confidence.

"We still argue, which is normal, we are all winners.

"The younger players still fear him, but not like when I was their age. He has mellowed, he isn't near as frightening as 20 years ago."

Park Wants Pivotal Role

Ji-sung Park is determined to put his early-season injuries behind him and help United push for an unprecedented fourth consecutive English league title...

You must be delighted to be back from injury and playing again…
It’s a pleasure and it was a special moment when the fans sang my song when I came back. I was really proud to hear that. It has been difficult being injured because you feel you’re not doing anything to help the team. When you play you feel more a part of the side. This season I’ve missed five or six weeks because of my knee injury, but the team is still competing for four trophies, which is the main thing. Now, it feels like the start of the season all over again, and what matters is what happens from now.

New signings have increased the competition for places - are you enjoying the challenge?
It’s good for the players and the team. Competition makes the players improve because everyone wants to play and keep their own place, so they work hard. This keeps the team strong and constantly improving.

What are your aims for the rest of 2009/10?
I want to play as many games as possible and help the team win as much as possible, starting with the title. It would be amazing to win four in a row – a record. To make three Champions League finals in a row would also be amazing for the club. The FA Cup is the one I haven’t won yet, so I want that, but all four would be great!

What is the side focusing on at the moment - pushing Chelsea all the way in the New Year?
Yes of course. We have a lot of games until the end of the season and December and January are particularly busy. It’s going to be hard, but we have done well at this stage in the last few seasons, so we have to do that again. We can’t worry about other teams' form, we just have to concentrate and do our best in every game.

And of course there’s the small matter of the derby - and Carlos Tevez again - in the Carling Cup semi-final…
The derby is always special for the players and the fans, and the fact that it’s a semi-final adds to that. The media will be hyping it up and we’ll be looking forward to it. I still speak to Carlos and I still see him, together with Pat [Patrice Evra], but I couldn’t text him about the draw because he still doesn’t speak English and I can’t speak Spanish!

Giggs Wins BBC Personality Award

Ryan Giggs has added yet another accolade to his already bulging collection after being crowned the 2009 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The Reds' record appearance-maker beat off competition from a host of top sportsmen and women, including F1 champion Jenson Button and world heptathlon champion Jessica Ennis who came second and third respectively. He is the footballer to win the coveted prize since former team-mate David Beckham in 2001.

Giggs was presented with his award by Olympic cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy and England cricket star Freddie Flintoff at a star-studded ceremony on Sunday night at Sheffield Arena. Ryan was visibly shocked during the presentation, but absolutely delighted by the honour.

"This is a big shock," admitted Ryan. "I'd like to thank the BBC for putting on a brilliant night and to thank everyone who voted for me.

"Honestly, this feels unbelievable. I've been lucky enough to win a lot of things in my career, playing with great players, playing for the greatest manager that's ever lived, and playing for the greatest club.

"I grew up watching the Sports Personality programme and to join the greats who have won it is unbelievable. A huge thank you again to everyone."

Boss Excited By Diouf

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed the club will be applying for a work permit for budding striker Mame Biram Diouf in January.

The 21-year-old, who has made one appearance for the senior Senegal national side, has impressed in training since signing in the summer from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s former club Molde, whom he has been playing for on loan.

With an ever-inflating transfer market, the United boss believes the Reds have pulled off a real coup in snapping up a hot prospect for the future.

Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference, Sir Alex said: “If you’re talking about value then you can look at our young boy Diouf."He’s been training with us and is looking very exciting. We’re going to apply for a work permit in January.

“That’s the kind of situation we’re good at – finding young players who can develop at the club and at 21 years of age he’s looking very good.”

Two other players that Sir Alex hopes to have available sooner rather than later are Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves.

The boss hinted that Rio could be fit again sometime in January, while Hargreaves is edging ever closer to competitive action.

“Rio is making some progress now, he’s much better. I think in maybe three weeks he should be available again," declared Sir Alex.

“Owen is doing most things [in training]. He’s doing work with the physios and possession training with us. It’s the confidence part to mark the big step forward in the competitive part of the training that needs to come now.”

Duo To Get New Contracts

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that United stalwarts Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes will be offered contract extensions as a reward for their excellent form.

Despite being 36 and 35 respectively, Giggs and Scholes are still vital cogs in the United machine and continue to turn in performances of the highest standard.

The Welshman, in particular, has caught the eye of the national media. Despite having been seen as more of a central midfielder nowadays, he has turned back the years with a number of dazzling displays on the wing, terrorising full-backs and leaving them with twisted blood just like years gone by.

The United boss paid tribute to both players, and tipped Giggs to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, with the ceremony taking place this Sunday.

Speaking at Friday’s pre-match press conference, Sir Alex said: “Ryan is an example to young people. He’s never changed and I think he’s producing his best form now.

“He’s retained that amazing quality in his game and enthusiasm to play. Longevity should be rewarded, and we reward it. He will be offered a new contract next season, and that’s an indication of what we think of him at 36, going on 37 next year.

“Consistency and longevity isn’t always rewarded, but sometimes a young sportsman can come on the scene and shine. That’s the competition Ryan’s had to face all his life but he has shown a consistency that has brought him to this level. And we hope Ryan gets the reward he deserves on Sunday.”

Of Scholes, the United boss insisted the midfielder has no intention of hanging up his boots any time soon, despite reports in the media over the last week or so.

“I don’t think he actually said that,” insisted the manager. “When I read it and spoke to him he said he never actually said that. When you get into your thirties everyone starts to wonder what the next year holds for them. But we’re sure about him and his qualities and we’ll offer him a contract.

“When you see his performances at West Ham and Wolfsburg, there’s no reason to think he can’t do it again next year."

Boss: One Of Those Days

Sir Alex Ferguson bemoaned United's luck in front of goal following the 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa, but he was quick to praise the heroic efforts of the visitors' defence.

Gabriel Agbonlahor's first half header secured a first win for Villa at Old Trafford for 26 years. After a fairly even opening period, United bossed proceedings after the break but were unable to make their domination count.

"We were camped in their box for a lot of the second half and had some really good chances. We only needed to take one to get us back in the game and it might have changed from then on; it was just one of those days when it wouldn't go in," Sir Alex told MUTV.

"I think we deserved something from our second half showing. There wasn't much in it in the first half and there were chances at both ends. They probably just shaded it and deserved the goal. But we pummelled them after half-time and had a lot of good opportunities but didn't take any.

"Their defenders worked their socks off and they deserve full credit for that," he added. "They were closing down players, blocking shots... doing everything they could. It was a big strong effort by them."

The defeat was United's fourth of the campaign and a particularly frustrating one after the Reds had seen Chelsea drop two points earlier in the day at home to Everton.

"It's not an easy league. Teams will drop points - that's a fact of life," admitted the boss. "As I say time and time again though, if we're within touching distance of the leaders come January then we're in with a great chance.

"Hopefully we can put the Villa game behind us and get the result we need on Tuesday against Wolves."

Vidic Irked By Villa Loss

Nemanja Vidic expressed his disappointment after United’s fourth league defeat of the season to Aston Villa meant they failed to capitalise on Chelsea’s slip-up earlier in the day.

The league leaders could only manage a draw at home to Everton, leaving them just three points in front of the Reds, but Gabby Agbonlahor’s first half header earned Villa a famous win at Old Trafford.

Vidic admits the champions missed a great opportunity to draw level at the top, and put United’s shortcomings down to a failure to take their chances.

“We are very disappointed. We had a game at home and the chance to share the first position with Chelsea but we didn’t take it," Vidic told MUTV.

“I think we did the best we could physically. We tried but I don't think we had the patience in the final third and we didn’t take our chances; that’s why we lost the game.”

The Serbian admitted the main difference between the two sides was Villa’s ruthlessness in taking the main opportunity that fell their way.

“I’m disappointed to concede because they didn’t have many chances but they took the best one they had. That’s what football is all about, scoring the goals that win games. They did their job and I’m disappointed we didn’t take the three points," he added.

"After they scored they tried to defend and use the pace of Agbonlahor and Young on the counter-attack. They are a hard team to play against - they close you down and fight for every ball. They also have pace up front and in the end they go home happy."

Thankfully, the Reds only have to wait until Tuesday to play again and have a chance to put the defeat behind them with a victory against Wolves.

"This is our best chance to play well, score goals and bring the confidence back," insisted Vidic. "It’s important when you lose a game to have the next one quickly, so you can play better and fix what you did in the last match."

Villa Earn Momentous Win Over Man. United

Aston Villa ended a 26-year wait to beat Manchester United in the league at Old Trafford as they moved up to third place in the Premier League.

Gabriel Agbonlahor scored the winner, heading in from Ashley Young's cross.

Wayne Rooney's shot smashed against the underside of the bar as United hit back, while Ryan Giggs also went close.

Nemanja Vidic had a header cleared off the line and Brad Friedel superbly denied Dimitar Berbatov as Villa clung on to claim an historic win.

The last time Villa beat United was in 1999, in a league cup match, and it is the first time that Villa have claimed all three points against Sir Alex Ferguson's men at Old Trafford, in a run stretching back to 1983.

Not only will United be bitterly disappointed by the loss, their fourth of the season and first at home, it also came after leaders Chelsea had surprisingly dropped points at home to Everton earlier in the day.

Instead of United drawing level with Chelsea at the top of the table, it is Martin O'Neill's side who are this week's significant movers, leapfrogging Tottenham and Arsenal.

And Villa secured their 100th Premier League win away from home in style by blending pace and power, and a resolute backline.

Right from the start, Villa looked absolutely determined to end their dismal record against United.

Two successive corners in the opening seconds signalled Villa's attacking intent and they continued that approach throughout, and not for one second were they overawed.

They also might have felt they had a point to prove, as talk has been largely of Manchester City and Tottenham breaking into the top four.

Yet Villa are fast maturing into a team that is capable of challenging the status quo, with the likes of Young and Agbonlahor a real menace up front.

The pair combined superbly to set up what proved to be Villa's winner, when Agbonlahor played the ball out wide to Young, whose return cross was headed in by the striker who had continued his run into the box.

If the goal may have been in part down to Darren Fletcher's unfamiliarity with the right-back position, Agbonlahor is a familiar sight on the scoresheet against United, having notched against them in the last four season.

Before that United had threatened, with Rooney involved in their best moves and most of the attacking coming down the left flank.

Rooney's deft header played in Antonio Valencia but the winger lacked the incisiveness to get a shot away, while Michael Carrick's shot from 20 yards brought a decent save from Friedel.

At the other end, Fletcher was dispossessed by Agbonlahor but his cross for Heskey was pushed away brilliantly by Tomasz Kuszack to prevent a certain goal.

Rooney, who moments before was booked for a clear dive in the area, went close to an equaliser when his excellent first touch gave him a shooting chance and he cracked his shot against the bar from six yards.

United brought on Michael Owen for Ryan Giggs at the start of the second half, a bid to address the problem of Rooney's isolation up front.

Half-chances fell to Carrick and Rooney, who had a goal-bound shot blocked as Villa defended doggedly.

Rooney then tried to pay in Berbatov, who was called off the bench as United employed a three-man forward line, but the pass went astray.

Berbatov should have done much better when Owen picked him out with an accurate cross but the Bulgarian fluffed his volley.

Villa, pinned back in their own half, seemed to have ridden out the storm and looked comfortable for a while.

But then they needed a goal-line clearance from Downing to keep out Vidic's header and shortly after Freidel pulled off a magnificent save to deny Berbatov, whose low shot had been headed for the corner.

United's last chance to salvage something fell to Carrick, but it was not to be as he fired his effort wide.

Welbeck Agrees New Deal

Manchester United is pleased to announce that it has agreed a new contract with Danny Welbeck which will see him at the club until at least June 2013.

Sir Alex Ferguson said:
“We are delighted. We see Danny as one of the great young players who has emerged from the academy. He will have a terrific career and we are glad that he has placed his trust in us with his future.”

Danny Welbeck said:
“I am really happy, there was never a doubt that this is where I want to be. I am enjoying every minute and learning so much from all the great players that are here. I would like to thank Sir Alex, the club and the fans for all their support.”

Fergie Rules Out Move For Campbell

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson says he will not be signing former England defender Sol Campbell.

The 35-year-old centre-half revealed he would be keen on an Old Trafford move having been released from his Notts County contract last week.

Ferguson said: "Campbell was a great player. But he is not a player we are thinking about bringing to United."

Campbell, capped 73 times by his country, is a free agent and available in the January transfer window having been released from his five-year contract with the League Two side last week.

Earlier in the week, the former Tottenham star told ESPN he would "love to play for Manchester United", but without any official contact, added he was "not counting any chickens and just waiting to see what happens".

United had 15 players missing - including eight defenders - for Tuesday's 3-1 Champions League win at Wolfsburg and Campbell could have been viewed as an attractive option.

Michael Carrick and Darren Fletcher were part of a makeshift three-man defence in Germany and Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic are the only regular defenders who are fit.

However, the injury crisis shows some sign of receding with the news that Jonny Evans (calf) could be back in 10 days, while John O'Shea (thigh) may return after Christmas.

Ferguson added: "We are having a hard time with centre-backs at this moment in time but I am sure by January most of them will be back."

It has been suggested the club are experiencing financial difficulties with Ferguson's lack of transfer activity following the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for £80m in the summer.

However, the Scottish boss said: "It has been said I do not have the money, but the money is there if I wanted to use it.

"I didn't see any value in the summer and I don't see any value at the moment either. I am happy with the players I already have at the club."

Campbell only settled his contract dispute with Notts County last Wednesday after the club initially refused to release his registration.

He linked up with director of football Sven-Goran Eriksson at Meadow Lane in August but departed less than a month into the deal having played just one game after reportedly becoming disillusioned with the club's rate of progression.

Sol Keen On Old Trafford Move

Sol Campbell has invited Manchester United to make a move for him after he was linked with a shock switch to Old Trafford.

Widespread reports on Wednesday suggested United were lining up a surprise deal for Campbell to bolster their injury-hit defence.

The former England international is free to find a new club after finally securing his release from Notts County after an ill-fated spell at the League Two club.

The 35-year-old, who will have to wait until January to join a new club, is currently training with former side Arsenal as he looks to maintain his fitness.

Reports have claimed United are ready to invite the veteran for training as they weigh up a short-term deal for the central defender.

Campbell has revealed he has not heard from anyone at United, but that he would interested in a move to the reigning Premier League champions.

"I have heard nothing officially from Manchester United, but there have been suggestions and of course, it would be a great move for me, if it happens," Campbell told ESPN.

"I shall just have to wait and see if a call comes through the right channels.

"Of course I would love to play for Manchester United, but I am not counting any chickens, just waiting to see what happens.

"I am training as usual at Arsenal, and would go to train at Manchester United if I was asked."

Boss Thanks Trusted Troops

Sir Alex Ferguson paid tribute to his players after his makeshift line-up won impressively in Wolfsburg.

The United boss opted for a back three of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Patrice Evra, with the latter being the only recognised defender in the starting eleven. Apart from conceding an equaliser to the hosts early in the second half, that trio - and the team at large - held firm to give Michael Owen the platform for a match-winning hat-trick.

The 3-1 win sealed top spot in Champions League Group B for the Reds and vindicated Sir Alex's faith in a new formation. “It was an experimental system, but the good thing is there was (still) enough quality there," the United manager said.

"You have to trust that the players are good at their job. They are, and they’ve proved it again tonight. I thought our control in the first half was very good. It was the same in the second half. Our threat towards the end and our speed in the counter attack were great.”

Sir Alex admitted to having concerns before the match, with so many senior members of his squad - especially defenders - unavailable through injury. The versatility of several players was therefore key to United winning in difficult circumstances.

“The players applied themselves and that’s important in a game like this," said Sir Alex. "Darren Fletcher, for example, plays all over the place. If you’ve got players like that who can adapt into a different system then it’s never a big problem."

The United boss also paid tribute to Owen's predatory instincts, following his clinical triple.

“It was a fantastic hat-trick," said Sir Alex. "You know how good he is in that penalty box. He’s on the shoulder, he makes runs across defenders, and his timing with his runs is fantastic. I’m really pleased for him.

"His performance tonight, as he’s proved many times, shows that he is one of the best strikers in the last third of the field in terms of his positioning, movement and his clinical finishing. The evidence is always on the football field, and Michael has given plenty of evidence of what he can do tonight.

"I think I made the point some weeks ago that his training performances have improved steadily and I would never have a problem with him starting any game.

"We've recently chosen to play one central striker – normally Wayne Rooney – with three central midfield players. Tonight, we had a different system with Danny Welbeck and Michael. He’s proved his worth and we’re delighted with his contribution."

Owen Hails Team Effort

Hat-trick hero Michael Owen saluted his team-mates following United's fine victory over Wolfsburg.

The deadly striker put the Reds in front just before the interval, and then grabbed two more in the final ten minutes to secure top spot in Champions League Group B for the thrice European champions.

It was Owen's second three-goal haul in Germany, having fired England to a 5-1 win in Munich back in 2001. But while he was clearly delighted with this individual feat, the Reds' number seven was keen to share the plaudits with his colleagues.

Owen said: “Obviously I’ve scored a few hat-tricks in my time but it’s nice to get one that caps off a great team display. Me getting the three goals will probably grab the headlines but I thought it was an excellent team performance tonight.

"I was playing a bit deeper than normal because with us having so many players out we had to protect our back three," he added, explaining how the reshuffling of the side affected him.

"Me and Danny (Welbeck) were dropping in and trying to pick up their central midfielders where possible, while hopefully getting into the Wolfsburg box when there were chances to do so.

“European football is a different type of football to the domestic game. If you get one chance you’ve got to stick it away and thankfully we nicked a goal just before half-time.”

Owen and United are now looking forward to further European adventures in the New Year, following the draw for the knock-out rounds on December 18.

“It’s great being top of the league so we play at home second (in the next round)," said Owen.

"I’m not going to lie, you want as weak a side as possible (in the draw). I don’t know the other results tonight, and there are more to come tomorrow, but you want to avoid the big boys.”

Finally, after earning the match ball, Owen assured us that it was in safe hands.

“I’ve given it to the masseur, I get a bit shy when I’m holding it as it draws attention to me! Hopefully he’ll get it signed by the lads and then pop it in my bag when we get back to Manchester.”

Man. United Top Champions League Group With Owen's Hat-trick

Michael Owen's hat-trick helped injury-hit Manchester United see off Wolfsburg and secure top spot in group B.

Michael Carrick was lucky not to give away a penalty and Wolfsburg wasted two headers, but Owen nodded in the opener before the break after Nani's cross.

Wolfsburg hit back and Edin Dzeko headed a well-deserved equaliser after Marcel Schafer's cross from the left.

Gabriel Obertan beat three defenders to set up Owen to take the lead and the striker chipped in a late third.

Having already made the knockout stages, United's mission in Germany was draw to finish top in their group, but their cause was not helped with 15 players missing.

It was another makeshift defence consisting of midfielders Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick playing alongside regular left-back Patrice Evra.

Fresh from his hour's spell at centre-half against West Ham on Saturday, Carrick struggled with Dzeko's 6ft 4in frame at the start and was lucky not to concede a penalty for a mis-timed tackle on Makoto Hasebe.

More wobbles followed with Andrea Barzagli and Zvjezdan Misimovic both heading wastefully over the bar from good positions.

It was hard work for the visitors on a heavy pitch, but there was a glimmer of hope on the half hour when Danny Welbeck slotted in smartly only to see the offside flag raised.

One minute before half-time the United faithful were jumping up and down celebrating a very well-worked opening goal.

Paul Scholes swept the ball to Nani on the left and the Portuguese star looped his cross to the back post for Owen to nod in for his second goal of the Champions League campaign.

With third-placed CSKA Moscow leading at half-time it was crucial the Germans got back into the game and 10 minutes into the second-half that is exactly what they did.

Lively midfielder Schafer burst down the left to cross in for the unmarked Dzeko to power a header past Tomasz Kuszczak.

A more conservative United invited Wolfsburg to push forward and their innovation was almost rewarded with a stinging shot from Brazilian striker Grafite palmed away by Kuszczak.

Manager Sir Alex Ferguson brought on Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan to shore up the tiring midfield and with eight minutes remaining United shocked the hosts to take the lead.

Obertan had been on the pitch for eight minutes and he danced his way through the defence to pass the ball across the six-yard line for Owen to poke home.

Following a goalmouth scramble at the other end, there was still time for the red shirts to break away and it was Owen again - still pushing hard for an England recall - who chipped calmly over the keeper.

Job done for the Old Trafford side and Ferguson's selection headache will at least subside for a few days before their Premier League commitments kick into action again at the weekend against Aston Villa.

Ryan Giggs Wins BBC Wales Sports Personality 2009

Wales and Manchester United football legend Ryan Giggs, 36, has been named the BBC Cymru Wales Sports Personality of the Year 2009.

Giggs was presented with the award by manager Sir Alex Ferguson, the mentor who signed the player as a teenager.

The award was announced by Wales' First Minister Rhodri Morgan following a public telephone vote.

Due to Giggs' commitment to a Manchester United Champions League game in Germany on Tuesday, he was handed the award on Sunday by Ferguson at Manchester United's Carrington training ground.

This is the second time Giggs has won the award, having last been awarded the trophy in 1996, and the evergreen Cardiff-born star has had another outstanding year.

Manchester United won the Barclays Premier League, the Carling Cup and were Uefa Champion League finalists, while Giggs himself won the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year Award and was nominated for European footballer of the year.

The Player of the Year award came amid stiff opposition from team-mates Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Edwin van der Sar as well as Liverpool's Steven Gerrard.

The award had previously eluded the player, who went on to maintain his remarkable record of scoring in every one of the 19 Premier League seasons, including a fine hat-trick against Tottenham Hotspur in September to help him top 150 goals for his club.

Giggs remains a threat to defences and manager Sir Alex Ferguson has advised aspiring players to follow his protege's example of maintaining physical fitness and mental toughness.

Now in his 19th season with the club, he has won more team honours than any of his predecessors.

Among his many records and accolades, Giggs is the only Red Devil to have played in their 11 Premier League wins and the only player in the game to have won that number of titles.

Giggs' award was announced on BBC Wales Today with the awards evening held later at Cardiff City Stadium.

The ex-Welsh international continues to defy his years as he remains hugely influential for Manchester United.

Cardiff-born Giggs has outstripped Old Trafford legend Bobby Charlton's club appearance record of 758 and has now played more than 800 games for the club since making his debut as a 17-year-old in 1991.

One of the few signs of Giggs' age is that in the last season he has switched from winger to central midfield, but he has yet to find himself usurped by a younger player.

The former Welsh international's standing among his fellow professionals is also a huge mark of respect for his evergreen talents.
