Preview: May 2013/14

Fixtures (TBC): 3 May Sunderland H | 11 May Southampton A

First thoughts: Two winnable games at the business end of the season.

Toughest test: On paper, Southampton shouldn't pose too many problems but both United's fixtures against the Saints last term were tricky. It took a last-minute Robin van Persie header at St Mary's to nick three points. and they were unlucky not to win at Old Trafford. Beware.

Subplot: These games may have consequences at both ends of the table. United could well need the points to retain the Barclays Premier League trophy, while Sunderland and Southampton finished in 17th and 14th spots respectively last season.

Miles to travel: 450 miles

Last May: P3 W1 D1 L1 (United 0-1 Chelsea, United 2-1 Swansea, West Brom 5-5 United)

Rival watch: Man City: Everton A, West Ham H; Chelsea: Norwich H, Cardiff A; Arsenal: West Brom H, Norwich A.

Carrick Relishes Return To Action

Michael Carrick sat down with ManUtd.com ahead of the pre-season Tour 2013 presented by Aon...

What's the one thing you enjoy most about tours?
The fans, the cities you visited, spending time together as a squad, just being back training… In some ways I think it’s good for us to get out of our bubble and our routine in Manchester and visit different places like the Far East and Australia. They’re not places you get to see very often and you get to see what the club means to the fans by the fantastic reception we’re given everywhere we go.

What are you expecting from the facilities in Australia?
I’m sure they’ll be similar to those in the United States as they’re also a sporting nation that has been very successful in all sports. I’m sure the facilities will be of a high standard as they take sport really seriously in Australia. I’m really looking forward to the visit there.

You’ve been to Asia before with United. What are your memories of the support United enjoys in that part of the world?
I still remember the first time I went there with United and how were mobbed as soon as we arrived at the airport. It was something I’d never really experienced and it made me realise how big this club really is.

Few clubs have the impact that United at home and abroad do they?
No, it’s crazy. One of the reasons I enjoy going there is just to see the reaction of the fans. It can take you back a little bit sometimes – even though they live a long way from Manchester the reaction the people give us over is amazing.

You’ve experienced visiting Asia with Ji-sung Park, what kind of reception are you expecting Shinji to receive in Japan?
I’d expect it to be something similar to what we saw with Ji. Shinji is the man over there and I’m sure he’ll get plenty of attention.

We’ll be playing at the International Stadium Yokohama where we won the Club World Cup in 2008 – what are your memories of the stadium and your stay in Yokohama and how proud were you to win the tournament?
It doesn’t really get spoken about much but, for me, it was massive. Chelsea missed out on winning it at the end of last year and you could see how devastated the players were. To get to that stage anyway, you’ve got to win the Champions League and not many people do that. It’s the second step after that to win it and it meant an awful lot, as much as everything else, if not more. I have special memories of going there and achieving what we did.

From a player’s perspective, what are the aims of a pre-season tour? What do you hope to get out of it?
A good pre-season gives you that base you need to keep going throughout the season. If you miss pre-season, you have to play catch-up. Every player is different - some can come back [from the summer break] and get straight back into it but others take a bit more time. I think it’s a vital part of the year – it’s important to get through pre-season and steer clear of injuries and be ready for the games at the start of the campaign.

Preview: April 2013/14

Fixtures (TBC): 5 April Newcastle A | 12 April Hull City H | 19 April Everton A | 26 April Norwich City H

First thoughts: Moyes' Goodison return

Toughest test: The United manager's former club and Newcastle will pose tricky tests on their own patches. The Reds have endured a difficult time at Goodison in recent years, and while it will no doubt be a poignant occasion for Moyes, he'll be determined to get one over his old team.

Subplot: April could turn out to be very busy for the Reds with the potential of nine games on the calendar. And they're not just your run-of-the-mill matches – a Champions League quarter-final and semi-final book-end the month, with an FA Cup semi thrown in midway for good measure.

Miles to travel: 372 miles.

Last April: P5 W2 D2 L1 (United 1-2 City, Stoke 0-2 United, West Ham 2-2 United, United 3-0 Villa, Arsenal 1-1 United)

Rival watch: Man City: Southampton H, Liverpool A, West Brom H, Crystal Palace A; Chelsea: Stoke H, Swansea A, Chelsea H, Liverpool A; Arsenal: Everton A, West Ham H, Hull A, Newcastle H.

Preview 2013/14: March

Fixtures: 1 Man City H | 8 West Brom A | 15 Liverpool H | 22 West Ham A | 29 Villa H

First thought: United must capitalise on home advantage against City and Liverpool.

Toughest test: The Manchester derby at Old Trafford could be key to the title race. City have won the last two on the Reds' turf so David Moyes will be desperate to ensure fans leave the ground after his first home derby with smiles on their faces.

Subplot: Moyes' managerial record against Manchester City is astonishingly good. He's won seven and drawn one of his 10 meetings with the Blues since Sheikh Mansour's takeover in early 2008/09. The last of these, 2-0 on 16 March 2013, helped United go 15 points clear in the title race as the Reds defeated Reading 1-0 later that day.

Miles to travel: 581.

Dublin's Advice For Zaha

Dion Dublin believes Wilfried Zaha will seamlessly acclimatise to life at Manchester United - as long as the new recruit adopts the right mentality and attitude to training.

44-year-old Dublin knows exactly how hard it is join the Reds from a lower league club, having moved to Old Trafford from Cambridge United in 1992 after manager Sir Alex Ferguson plucked the towering striker from the depths of English football on the advice of U’s boss John Beck.

Today, Zaha is following a similar path by swapping the Championship for the Barclays Premier League following his recent transfer from Crystal Palace. And when asked what it’s like to move up a division, or four in his case, Dublin was typically insightful in his response.

“It is pretty scary, I won’t deny that,” he told MUTV. “It took me about three or four months to realise that I had moved from Cambridge United, who were in the fourth division, to Manchester United, who were the biggest club in the world.

“Sir Alex was the person who wanted me to sign. He had never seen me play live at all. John Beck sent him a video, he looked at it and said ‘he scores with his left foot, his right foot, let’s have him’. He decided to have a go and that belief in me shone through after two or three training sessions.

“I started to relax and the more relaxed I became, the more my game came out and I started to get more results on the field of play. Players like Paul Ince, Gary Pallister, Paul Parker and Sparky were really kind to me and got me involved. They brought me into their life, which was amazing.

“What Zaha will have to do is find his feet. He can’t go in all guns blazing because you can fall flat on your face against some of the best players in the world. Go in, respect what you are around, listen to the people who will teach you to become a better player, take it on board and he will do amazingly.”

Despite being one of the most exciting prospects in the game, having won the Championship Player of the Year award after helping the Eagles secure promotion to the top-flight last term, Dublin insists the protégée has a lot of work to do but is confident the youngster will flourish at United.

“It is not easy to settle in,” Dion stated. “You do have to go in with the right attitude in order to be accepted and to settle in quickly. You do get sussed out in the game of football very quickly if you go in with a chip on your shoulder and if you are bouncing about like you are the new boy on the block. You will get hammered in the dressing room and rightly so, especially when you come to a football club like this.

"I don’t know Zaha personally, but I have seen him play several times and I think he is an unbelievable talent and one that needs coaching. He needs to know when to do things, where to do things, how to do it, who to listen to, what to contribute to his team, but I‘m sure the manager, Mr Moyes, will do that amazingly and pull him aside. It is not easy to settle in but it can be made easier if you go in with the right attitude.”

Giggs Open On Future

Ryan Giggs says he is yet to map out the path that will follow his eventual retirement from football, but the Manchester United legend admits he is excited about the next chapter in his career.

Giggs is currently attending the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Turkey as part of the UEFA Pro Licence course and has been widely tipped for success in either management or coaching following an illustrious playing career that has yielded 25 major honours and more than 1,000 matches for club and country.

Of course, the iconic Welshman is far from finished yet and is about to embark on an unprecedented 24th season at Old Trafford – his first without mentor Sir Alex Ferguson. But he is self-aware enough to know the end is near and is already planning for whatever might come next.

“It’s quite tough. I am sort of an intense person so when I am still playing I'm concentrating on that,” Giggs explained during an interview with The Football Association's official website. “But also, I have got to start thinking that it is near the end. I have to start thinking about what I am going to do afterwards.

“I am in the process of doing that and obviously coming on this course has helped me – speaking to other people, listening to what the coaches or tutors say, and just trying to get little bits that can help you. Everyone has their own style and everyone picks up different things.

“Obviously, I'd be stupid not to pick up on the stuff I've learnt from Sir Alex. I don’t know whether I am going to be a coach or a manager, if I decide to go into coaching, but it is obviously exciting for me. I have been playing for 20-odd years and it is a new chapter in my life.

“I want to do well and I want to make a success of it like I did as a player. It will be like starting all over again, like being an apprentice again. It will be learning new things and making mistakes as you go along, just trying to better yourself as much as you can.”

After finishing the UEFA Pro Licence course in Turkey, Giggs will then report back to United and new boss David Moyes, who officially takes charge on 1 July to begin one of the most anticipated managerial reigns in history. Ryan says he's raring to go.

“I think it is a challenge and as a player you always want challenges. First and foremost, there are great players there and we have just won the league, so everything is in place for it to carry it on.”

Dickov Expects Powell Fight

Doncaster Rovers manager Paul Dickov has confirmed Manchester United teenager Nick Powell is the 'quality of player' he is looking to sign.

Powell has been linked with a loan move to the Championship side after making just six appearances for United last season following his transfer from Crewe Alexandra.

Dickov has not discussed a potential deal with his United counterpart David Moyes and would expect plenty of competition for the 19-year-old.

"I've not spoken to David Moyes since he took the job at Old Trafford," Dickov said in the Doncaster Free Press.

"If Nick Powell is a player we would like here, I'm sure there are 10 Premier League clubs and another 20 Championship clubs that would want him as well.

"But, without naming names, that's the quality of player we're looking to sign."

United Baines Bid Turned Down

Manchester United have had a £12m bid to reunite new manager David Moyes with England defender Leighton Baines rejected by Everton.

Moyes has made Baines, 28, one of his top transfer priorities as he prepares to take charge officially at United after his move from Goodison Park.

He is almost certain to return with an improved offer to persuade Everton to part with one of their prize assets.
However, Everton's stance on Baines has been a firm "not for sale".

New Toffees manager Roberto Martinez made it clear he would like the left-back, who was named in the PFA's 2012-13 Premier League team of the year, to sign a new contract.

Moyes' move casts doubt on the long-term future of 32-year-old Patrice Evra as Baines, one of Everton's outstanding performers last season, will want regular first-team football with the World Cup to be staged in Brazil next summer.

And Baines has recently spoken about how much he is relishing working with Martinez, who has replaced Moyes at Everton following his decision to end his 11-year tenure at Goodison Park and succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Baines said: "We've chatted on the phone. It was just about speaking about the start of the season and looking forward to working with each other. Anyone you speak to only says great things about him."

Rene Departure Confirmed

Manchester United today confirmed the departure of first-team coach Rene Meulensteen.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward said: "I'd like to thank Rene for his contribution to the club, particularly since he returned to Old Trafford in 2007.

"He has been first-team coach for five years and in that time has given great assistance to Sir Alex Ferguson and Mick Phelan in keeping the team at the top of the game not only in this country but in Europe as well.

"On behalf of everyone at United, I wish him well for the future."

Rene Meulensteen said: "I would like to thank Sir Alex Ferguson, the owners, all colleagues, players and fans who made my time at Manchester United very special and one I will never forget. I wish everyone at this great football club all the best."

Preview 2013/14: February

Fixtures: 1 Feb Stoke A | 8 Feb Fulham H | 11 Feb Arsenal A | 22 Feb Crystal Palace A

First thoughts: A month on the road for the Reds.

Toughest test: Stoke is never an easy away trip but many people expect Arsenal – the only top four side not to change manager - to be genuine title contenders in 2013/14. Robin van Persie has scored two goals in two games against the Gunners since swapping the Emirates for Old Trafford and he'd love to add to the tally on his North London return.

Subplot: Could Wilfried Zaha make his first return to Selhurst Park in a United shirt? He played a huge part in getting Palace promoted to the top-flight and would love to show what he can do on familiar turf. That said, visits to Selhurst Park have always been pretty tough for United, and get ready for re-runs of Eric Cantona's kung-fu kick there in 1995.

Preview 2013/14: January

Fixtures: 1 Jan, Tottenham (H) | 11 Jan, Swansea (H) | 18 Jan, Chelsea (A) | 28 Jan, Cardiff (H)

First thoughts: New Years’ resolution? Win at all costs.

Toughest test: Having lost to Spurs at home last season the Reds must be wary, but January's trip to Stamford Bridge casts a shadow over the other fixtures. The Blues are likely to be challengers to United's title, especially with Jose Mourinho back at the helm. This tie will challenge both teams' title credentials.

Subplot: The self-proclaimed ‘Special One’ had an excellent record against Sir Alex Ferguson, and unfortunately, he is unbeaten in eight outings against David Moyes whilst he was in charge of Everton. However, the Scot always put up a brave fight and with better resources, could turn the tables around.

Preview 2013/14: December

Fixtures: 3 Dec Everton H | 7 Dec Newcastle United H | 14 Dec Aston Villa A | 21 Dec West Ham United H | 26 Dec Hull City A | 28 Dec Norwich City A

First thoughts: Once the Champions League is put to bed, there's a real chance to focus on domestic matters and enjoy a productive festive period.

Toughest test: Last term, arguably the Reds' worst performance was reserved for a bleak November defeat at Carrow Road, and making the arduous trek to Norfolk after a hectic Christmas schedule will again test United's mettle.

Subplot: David Moyes will cross paths with his former club, Everton, for the first time since his move to Old Trafford. His replacement, Roberto Martinez, has time to impart his own playing style on the Toffees before heading over to Manchester.

United's 3 Amigos

Inside United sat down with team-mates and good friends Antonio Valencia, David De Gea and Javier Hernandez to get their views on an epic season...

Hello guys. So, let’s start with Antonio, how do you think he did this season?
DDG: I think he started the season well but then was injured – you got injured, didn’t you, (to Antonio) – and so he was out for a while. Then he started out once again trying to regain form and fitness and now he’s back to his best.

JH: It was no accident last season that he was named Player of the Year, because he is fundamental to us and has made the difference in various games. He hasn’t been in such incredible form this year but as David here mentioned, he’s unfortunately been out with that injury, which affects the form of any player and can make it pretty hard to fully recover your fitness. But we all know just what a quality player Antonio is and he’s been an important player for us again, just like everyone else has really. That’s the nicest thing about this team, everyone has a place here and an important role to play. I think that Antonio is now showing that in the four years he’s been at United he has earned and consolidated his place here as a result of hard work and a lot of effort, which is now paying dividend.

JH: David, it’s your turn!

DDG: Say the right things!

JH: In an interview recently I said that, like Luis Antonio, David had to be up there with the best players in the world right now. For me he’s the best goalkeeper in the world because we all talk about development and having to go down a certain career path and, of course, at his age many people would have been scared to give him the place he’s earned for himself. But I think that this season he’s really benefitted from being given the opportunity to play on a regular basis. He was first choice between the sticks and I think that any player in the world shows his true ability when he gets the chance to have a decent run of games in the side, and David has really shown his quality. He was voted the best keeper in the Premier League, so I’d say he’s doing very nicely thank you.

AV: He’s been perfect in everything he’s done. It’s incredible what he’s achieved. He’s shown once again just what an important keeper he is for Manchester United. He’s not far off breaking into the full Spanish national side. All his team mates here really hope that in two or three years he can be shot-stopping for Spain for the whole 90 minutes. He is proving here at United that he is one of the best goalkeepers around and I think that all of his team-mates are really happy and pleased to have David in such top form and we hope to be able to enjoy that for a long time to come.

And what about Javier?
AV: You can’t say any more about Javier! He’s been here now for three seasons and if you were to try and work out how many times he’s made the difference, it’s just incredible. What is it this year, 15 goals in 25 appearances? That’s something I think is really amazing. I’m really happy to have him as a team-mate and enjoy working with him every day.

DDG: As ‘Señor’ Antonio has already said, Chicha is very important both on and off the field for his bright and positive attitude.

You only have to look at how he goes about his work and how upbeat he always is. It inspires you to train and play hard and it’s a real pleasure to play alongside him and have him as a team-mate. In terms of goals scored per minutes on the field, I think he’s the best in the league, and that’s what it’s all about. He hasn’t had many good runs of games but whenever he has featured, he’s always scored and as a result picked up plenty of vital points for us.

JH: As Antonio was saying, it’s a real pleasure to have these two as team-mates as we can hang out together and speak to each other in our own Spanish language, which is nice and very important too. Of course, we get on well with our other team-mates too, as the three of us are doing OK with our English so we can communicate without any problem. These two lads are also important in the whole dressing room; they are real characters, you can learn a lot from them and we have a lot of fun.

RVP: My First Year At United

In an Inside United interview, Robin van Persie selected his 20 favourite moments from an epic debut 2012/13 season with United. Click the image to launch a gallery...

1. OT arrival “I remember I was very excited on this day. I was buzzing about this new challenge. I was living off the adrenaline!”

2. First training session “Training started late while I finished a few medical tests before I could officially train. I couldn’t wait to get out on the pitch, though.”

3. First game (Everton 1 United 0) “I came on with a tough 20 minutes to go at Everton. Even though we lost it was still a great day. I was proud to make my debut.”

4. OT debut (United 3 Fulham 2) “It was a dream start, scoring after 10 minutes of my home debut. What a day. I played 90 minutes but I admit I struggled after an hour!”

5. Hat-trick hero (S'ton 2 United 3) “A crazy game but we never gave up. I apologised in the dressing room for missing the penalty. It was a great win, it felt significant.”

6. Anfield winner (Liverpool 1 United 2) “This time, I made sure of my penalty. It was great to score the winner. I didn’t have my best game but it felt good to beat Liverpool.”

7. Euro double (Cluj 1 United 2) “It was a fantastic Wazza pass for my second at Cluj. The keeper came towards me and I just guided it past him. It spun into the net beautifully.”

8. Take it to the Bridge (Chelsea 2 United 2) “I love playing against Chelsea and I’ve scored all my goals against them at Stamford Bridge. It’s a great place to play, and win.”

9. Gunner get you (United 2 Arsenal 1) “A weird day. I should’ve scored two. I’d never played against a former team so scoring was strange. But you have a job to do.”

10. Derby day (City 2 United 3) “Wayne and I discussed what to do at the free-kick. Shoot or cross? My shot deflected off the wall past Hart. You can’t get luckier than that!”

11. Hammer blow (West Ham 2 United 2) “A late goal. Giggsy’s pass was unbelievable. I didn’t break stride. I had a good first touch and decent finish to earn a replay.”

12. Earn your Spurs (Spurs 1 United 1) “It was snowing, cold and they nicked a draw. I scored from Cleverley’s great cross, but it’s the result I remember more.”

13. Toffees broken (United 2 Everton 0) “My goal was a bit lucky to make it 2-0. It went in and we were relieved because we’d of what happened in the 4-4 draw the year before.”

14. Real deal (Real Madrid 1 United 1) “One of football’s most iconic stadiums; my first time there. We had chances to win (including me) and we needed to win really.”

15. Hard to take (United 1 Real 2) “A harsh red card for Nani. It was a blow, everything up to that moment was right. Everyone got behind us and the atmosphere was electric.”

16. Stoked to score (Stoke 0 United 2) “The lads gave me stick for my celebration but I wanted to share the moment. Sir Alex has been a joy to work with.”

17. Cheering on Spurs “I cheered for Spurs against City. Can you believe it? An ex-Arsenal player wanted Spurs to win! We knew the title was one game away.”

18. That goal (United 3 Villa 0) “It was instinct. I looked up and thought: ‘This ball is so nice. It’s too beautiful to take a touch’. Everything was exactly as I wanted it to be.”

19. Trophy time “This is for the fans, players and staff. What I really like is it’s made so many people happy. Kids, babies, women, men – they’re all so happy.”

20. Awards night “Winning [Player of the Year] is fantastic. Being involved with the guys has made such an impact on me. They’re a pleasure to work with.”

Kagawa Vows To Improve

Despite winning the Barclays Premier League, Shinji Kagawa was not happy with his 2012/13 campaign and the Japanese starlet has promised to improve this coming season.

After winning consecutive Bundesliga titles with Borussia Dortmund, the 24-year-old arrived at Old Trafford with a noteworthy reputation and showed glimpses of his immeasurable talent throughout a promising debut term, scoring six goals in 26 appearances.

With great intelligence, Kagawa even played in a number of positions, most commonly in the hole behind the striker or on the left of a midfield diamond, displaying the attributes that have made him one of the most exciting imports in European football.

However, his consistency and form was ultimately undermined by an ankle injury that ruled him out for over two months from October onwards, forcing him onto the treatment table just as early-season momentum was beginning to mount – which was admittedly hard to take.

“It was a tough time for me with a lot going on in my head,” Shinji said of his first season with the Reds. “I am not happy with my performance for the team at all.

“I didn't score that much and I also had my injury. Despite that, it was great we won the league - I just don't feel that I achieved everything that I wanted. For me personally, it wasn't a good season.”

Of course, Kagawa is no stranger to overcoming adversity. Having been overlooked by Japan for the 2010 World Cup, the Reds hero declined a place on their standby list of players in order to start his pre-season training early ahead of a career-changing move to Dortmund the following month.

And after a successful spell in Germany - which later resulted in a dream move to United – that decision has been completely vindicated, proving the importance of hard work. Now, with another new manager to work with, Shinji hopes the same ethic impresses David Moyes.

“I always think that I must play well,” he told the Premier League’s official website. “And I always have an image in my mind of how I want to play, wherever the position. Whenever there is a tough time, whenever it gets difficult for me, I just train and look ahead to the future.”

Preview 2013/14: November

Fixtures: 2 Nov Fulham A | 9 Nov Arsenal H | 23 Nov Cardiff City A | 30 Nov Tottenham A

First thought: Three tricky aways and Arsenal’s OT visit make it a hard month.

Toughest test: United encountered a blizzard of Spurs pressure at a snowy White Hart Lane last term and the fact that a 1-1 draw was so valued by the Reds emphasised the difficulty of the task. Now a season wiser, André Villas-Boas’ side are perhaps an even sterner prospect, especially coming just days after United play a Champions League group game and at the end of a month of lengthy away trips.

Subplot: The Reds play Cardiff for the first time in almost 40 years. In 1974/75, United were seeking to bounce back from relegation when they won 1-0 at Ninian Park and 4-0 at OT en route to the Division Two title and promotion back to the top flight.

Fixtures: 5 Oct Sunderland A | 19 Oct Southampton H | 26 Oct Stoke City H

First thoughts: The title race gathers pace with the onset of Autumn.

Toughest test: Southampton were among the best teams to visit Old Trafford last term according to Sir Alex Ferguson and Mauricio Pochettino’s men are likely to provide another stern challenge this time around. With a great work ethic, bags of flair and plenty of spirit, they’re definitely a team to watch.

Subplot: United might face former players John O’Shea, Phil Bardsley and Wes Brown at the Stadium of Light before welcoming ex-Reds striker Mark Hughes back to the Theatre of Dreams - the 1991 Cup Winners’ Cup hero is, of course, the new Stoke City boss after the Potters parted company with Tony Pulis.

Giggs Enjoys Supporting Role

Ryan Giggs says one of the most enjoyable aspects of pre-season tours is the opportunity to support the work of the Manchester United Foundation.

The Reds have confirmed five friendly matches in Asia and Australia in July as part of Tour 2013, presented by Aon, with a sixth to follow in Sweden in August. The team will kick things off in Bangkok, before heading to Sydney, the Japanese cities of Yokohama and Osaka and then Hong Kong before the final leg in Stockholm on 6 August.

Amid the players' busy tour schedule and preparations for the new season will be a number of Foundation events and visits into communities around the world, which Giggs insists the players want to get involved in. "They are very humbling experiences," he told ManUtd.com.

"We’ve been involved with charities like UNICEF for a long time and it’s great to be able to make a difference first-hand. We have fundraising events and we try to help raise awareness from here, but when we’ve been to the likes of South Africa and Thailand we’re able to visit AIDS centres and orphanages and you can see the great work UNICEF do and the difference that the players and staff can make. It’s something that we look forward to getting involved in and we all get a lot out of the experiences."

Blackburn boss Gary Bowyer is keen to nurture links with David Moyes in the hope of bringing some of Manchester United's starlets to Ewood Park on loan.

Rovers' managing director Derek Shaw knew Moyes when the pair worked together at Preston North End more than 10 years ago and Bowyer wants to take advantage of this contact.

Moyes recently replaced Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford and the 41-year-old Bowyer told the Lancashire Telegraph: "Obviously, Manchester United are only down the road and they have some talented players, ones I've seen growing up so I'm aware of them.

"If we can establish a link with them in terms of bringing players to give them experience in the Championship, it's a fantastic contact.

"Derek obviously had David at Preston and when we were in the run-in during last season I just asked if it would be possible to speak to him.

"Derek asked him and he said 'yes, no problem'. David was brilliant.

"He gave me half an hour of his time, he went through a list of things of, 'Are you doing this, are you doing that, this is what you might need to do'.

"The advice was invaluable to us in terms of what we did and how we went about it towards the end of the season."

Rio Hungry For Success

Rio Ferdinand admits sharing the Manchester United dressing room with Ryan Giggs will always make him hungry for more success.

Ferdinand will soon embark on his 12th season with the club, during which time he has six Premier League titles, a Champions League and two League Cups to look back on.

His August 9 testimonial against Sevilla will be the first game in charge for David Moyes at Old Trafford and Ferdinand hopes United can mark the Scot's arrival in Manchester with first-season success.

With Paul Scholes having retired, Ferdinand only trails Giggs in the medal stakes, and that motivates him to secure further success when the Wales legend finally hangs up his boots.

"I'm not happy with what I have won, not when I can look around at people in the changing room and know they have got more than me," Ferdinand said.

"You always aim for the people above. That is what I did the day I walked through the door. I looked around and saw people with three, four, five titles and thought 'I want to have that'.

"You set yourself targets all the time. I am never going to sit in that changing room and think 'I am happy with what I have done'."

Ferdinand hopes the fact that Moyes has so many multiple title-winners in his squad will help make his transition from life on the verge of European football with Everton much easier.

"The new manager is going to want to put his own imprint on the team. That is what you would expect as players. We are open-minded to that," he added.

"But hopefully the fact he has got people in there who know how to get the job done will give him a little bit of time.

"The team can be on auto-pilot, with the manager just tinkering with things to make sure it is done in the right way. If we need to change tactics, that is when the manager comes into his own, with whatever training methods he wants to use.

"In terms of going out on a Saturday and getting games won, a lot of us have been doing it for years. That is why we have been here for so long and won so many things."

Manchester United Urged To Show Patience With Wilfried Zaha

Dougie Freedman has backed Wilfried Zaha to show his talent at Manchester United once he adjusts to life with the Premier League champions.

Zaha was signed from Crystal Palace by United in January, before being loaned back to Selhurst Park for the remainder of the season and helping the Eagles gain promotion via the play-offs.

There has been speculation that he could agree another loan deal with Palace for the new season, although it will be down to United to decide on the best course for his development.

Freedman played a key role in helping Zaha flourish during his time at Palace, and is backing the 20-year-old to go from strength to strength with the Red Devils.

However Freedman, who left Palace in October to take charge of Bolton Wanderers, says it would be wrong to expect an immediate impact.

"It took him eight games to establish himself in the Palace first team and eight to 10 games later he was the best player," said Freedman.

"I have no doubt he will take time to settle in but when he does he will show the talent that he has.

"I know his character and he won't be fazed, David Moyes will see that day-in and day-out.

"Wilfried likes a challenge, hence he's gone to the biggest club in the world."

Preview 2013/14: September

Fixtures (Dates TBC): 14 Sep Crystal Palace H | 21 Sep Manchester City A | 28 Sep West Bromwich Albion H

First thoughts: Moyes v Pellegrini - round one.

Toughest test: Arguably the biggest match in world football, the Manchester derby will determine who sets the early-season pace in what could prove to be the most competitive title race for years. Although the cast may be different, with new managers and players at both clubs, the script remains the same. Quite simply, this is the one.

Subplot: Wilfried Zaha could face his old employers Palace just weeks after starting his United career. After signing for the Reds last January, the youngster rejoined the Eagles on loan until May when he helped them secure promotion via the play-offs. No wonder he won the Championship Player of the Year award.

Miles to travel: 12

Last September: P4 W3 D0 L1 (Southampton 2-3 United; United 4-0 Wigan Athletic; Liverpool 1-2 United; United 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur)

Preview 2013/14: August

Fixtures (Dates TBC): 17 Aug Swansea A | 24 Aug Chelsea H | 31 Aug Liverpool A

First thought: Welcome to Manchester United, David Moyes.

Toughest test: Chelsea are the more imposing opponent but hosting a United side with Everton's former manager in charge pumps up the pressure at Liverpool and instantly heightens the hype. Manchester's Reds won at Anfield for the first time in five years last September with a 2-1 triumph, but there's added bite to this one now.

Subplot: Jose Mourinho is the new (old) boss at Chelsea, who are real contenders to United's crown, and the press will no doubt focus on the Portuguese coach, having widely tipped him to succeed Sir Alex. For David Moyes - first choice for the Old Trafford post - it's an early chance to prove his credentials against a major rival in the title race.

New Territories For MUTV

In the wake of winning a 20th English league title, Manchester United has today announced the extension of its dedicated TV channel, MUTV.

The three deals will see the channel team up with TV stations SkyNet and TV2 Norway, which for the first time will broadcast MUTV content to fans in Myanmar and Norway respectively, as well an extension of its already-successful partnership with the Icelandic TV station 365.

With some 23 million viewers tuning into a United game within the first 7 months of last season, SkyNet is confident MUTV will be popular in the football-fanatical country. Established in 2010, the pay TV platform broadcasts 84 channels including five HD channels and 20 in-house package channels. These consist of a mix of programme genres, with the station’s five sports channels establishing it as the leading football broadcaster.

Manchester United has a long history of strong support in Norway. This new partnership with TV2 Norway, one of the country’s biggest and most well-known TV stations, will be welcome news to the club’s official Scandinavian supporters’ club, which boasts more members than any other official branch in the world.

365 is Iceland’s largest private media corporation, broadcasting six TV stations as well as owning radio stations, a national newspaper, magazines and an online news website. The company currently has 40% market share of the Icelandic Pay TV market. 365 already broadcasts MUTV content to fans via its popular Stod 2 Sport channel, which can be purchased as part of a larger pay to view package. The extension of its partnership with Manchester United will allow the channel to continue showing MUTV footage to the club’s Icelandic followers for the next two years.

Manchester United commercial director Richard Arnold comments: “Manchester United is fortunate enough to have 659 million followers around the globe and the creation of agreements, like the ones we have with SkyNet, TV2 and 365, allows us to bring them closer to the club they love. The new agreements mean that MUTV now has 22 international broadcast partners, covering 56 territories worldwide including parts of Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. Through our partnerships, tens of millions of people now have access to MUTV content.

“The dedicated channel already creates some unique and distinctive content and, with the development of our network of broadcast partners, we are able to invest in this further. By teaming up with reputable media houses like SkyNet, TV2 and 365 we can ensure that this content is delivered in right way, reaching key audiences.”

Ferdinand Challenges Manchester United To Hit Ground Running

Rio Ferdinand insists Manchester United must hit the ground running after being handed some tough opening Premier League fixtures.

United begin the David Moyes era with a trip to Swansea on the opening day of the new season, but face some of their title rivals very early on.

The clash at the Liberty Stadium is followed by meetings with Chelsea, Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Manchester City in a baptism of fire for Moyes after his appointment as Sir Alex Ferguson's replacement.

"It is a lively start with Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool and Swansea away in the first five games," Ferdinand told Sky Sports.

"Normally you get a few games to ease yourselves in, but this time we must hit the ground running."

And Ferdinand knows how important a good start will be, especially for the new boss, and challenged his team-mates to be at their best right from the word go.

"We've got a new manager, we are going to be focused, on impressing him and making sure we are ready for the start of the season," he added.

"It is going to be important, we need to get off to a good start and I'm confident we will do."

Ross County Will Host Manchester United In July For A Pre-season Friendly

Ross County will host Manchester United in July to officially open the revamped, re-seeded Victoria Park.

Prior to his retirement, Sir Alex Ferguson agreed to send a side north after discussions with County director of football George Adams, who was part of the coaching staff with Ferguson at Aberdeen.

The match is scheduled for Saturday, 20 July, a fortnight before the Highland club open their SPL campaign at Celtic.

County chairman Roy MacGregor said: "Thanks to an agreement between George and Sir Alex, the game will go ahead next month.

"We are delighted about this and cannot wait for a Manchester United select, which could include a few first-team players, to fly up for this match.

"With the new pitch being laid this month, we didn't really want to play a match here before the start of the season, but clearly this was too much to resist. To have Manchester United be our opponents - to christen the pitch - is terrific news.

"The last time they were here, I believe, was in the 1970s, so it's fitting they are coming back now for an occasion when our new stand will be complete and pitch in place."

United's previous visit to Dingwall for a pre-season friendly was in 1976 - when Martin Buchan and Gordon McQueen were included in a side managed by Tommy Docherty.

Moyes' Boys: Strikers

Few new managers inherit the attacking talent David Moyes is taking charge of, with a blend of experience and youth, and a balance of creative and finishing abilities.

For 11 years, David Moyes rarely had strength-in-depth at Everton, but that certainly won’t be the case from 1 July when the Scot officially takes charge of Manchester United.

Here, we assess the four forwards all vying for his attention at Old Trafford. You can also view each player's full, updated profile by clicking on their name...

Robin van Persie: Signed from Arsenal last August, the Dutch maestro was the catalyst for last season’s 20th title; he played in every Premier League match and scored 26 goals on league duty alone. His efforts later earned the supporters' Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award and, having earned his first winners' medal, this fans' favourite is desperate to extend his trophy collection.

Wayne Rooney: Still a talismanic figure at Old Trafford, the former Everton striker will link up with his old manager on 1 July following a productive 2012/13 campaign in which 16 goals were netted from 37 matches in all competitions. The England vice-captain played in a variety of positions last term and, at 27 and fast approaching 10 years at United, has experience and ability in abundance.

Danny Welbeck: The Longsight lad knows his scoring must improve, having netted just twice last term, but his overall play from the wing was outstanding and earned him a nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Year award. Tall, powerful, intelligent, the future is bright for United’s academy graduate.

Javier Hernandez: Chicharito displayed his awesome predatory instincts last term to bag 18 goals from 36 appearances – equating to an impressive one in two ratio. Armed with intelligent movement and fantastic speed, the Mexican hotshot is not to be messed with in the final third.

Season 2013/14 Fixtures Released: United To Start Against Swansea

New Manchester United manager David Moyes' first test in the Barclays Premier League will be to take the Reds to Wales to face Swansea City on the opening day of the 2013/14 season.

It's the first time the sides have met on the maiden day of a league campaign and the match is currently scheduled to kick-off on Saturday 17 August (all fixtures are subject to change; the first round of TV selections will be made in mid-July).

The Premier League's 2013/14 fixtures were announced at 09:00 BST on Wednesday and, as always, make for interesting reading. Following what's been, in recent seasons, a tricky trip to the Liberty Stadium, the defending champions' schedule doesn't get any easier.

Moyes' men then host Chelsea at Old Trafford (Saturday 24 August) before travelling away to Liverpool (Saturday 31 August), welcoming Crystal Palace to Manchester (Saturday 14 September) and then visiting Manchester City (Saturday 21 September).

The new Reds manager welcomes his former club, Everton, to Old Trafford on Tuesday 3 December, while his return to Goodison Park is United’s penultimate away game of the season (Saturday 19 April).

The festive fixtures include a trip to promoted Hull City on Boxing Day, then a visit to Norwich City (Saturday 28 December). The New Year will be brought in at Old Trafford with a 1 January game against Tottenham.

Fixtures at the business end of the season can be crucial to the title run-in and United's last four come against Everton (away), Norwich City (home), Sunderland (home) and Southampton (away). For now, though, all eyes are on opening day, when David Moyes will take charge of his first league game as Manchester United manager.

United To Play In Stockholm

Premier League champions Manchester United will play a pre-season match against AIK in Stockholm as part of its 2013 Tour, presented by Aon.

The game will take place on Tuesday 6 August 2013 at Friends Arena.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill said: "I’m delighted that the final game of our preparations for the 2013/14 season will be in the magnificent new home of Swedish football. This match is our first against AIK and will provide a tough test for the players as the new campaign approaches.

"As a club, we have visited Sweden many times and, of course, one of our Treble winners of 1999, Jesper Blomqvist, appeared 30 times for the Swedish national team, as well as playing – and scoring – against United for Gothenburg in the Champions League."

Thomas Perslund, CEO of Friends Arena, said: "We are proud to have Manchester United at Friends Arena and I am sure this game against AIK will be unforgettable for the football fans coming on 6 August."

AIK managing director Thomas Edselius said: "From AIK’s side, we are looking forward to this opportunity to play against one of the most successful clubs in the world. Our ambition is to consistently play in the European cups and we are therefore always interested in playing against top-level European clubs.

"We are proud that Manchester United has chosen AIK for this match. We are also very excited about this game where the two biggest clubs in Sweden and England have the opportunity to play for the first time."

Aon is delighted to be the presenting partner of Manchester United’s 2013 Tour, offering its expertise in risk management, insurance, reinsurance brokerage and human resources solutions.

Greg Case, president and chief executive officer of Aon, said: "Aon’s partnership with Manchester United is as valuable in Sweden as it is in Asia or Latin America. Being the presenting partner for Tour 2013 gives Aon colleagues in Sweden and around the world a tremendous opportunity to demonstrate what we do for clients, and how the issues we help them with, including risk, talent, health, retirement, and data and analytics, are equally important in the worlds of business and sport."

Moyes' Boys: Centre-midfield

On 1 July, David Moyes will start work as Manchester United manager and begin to assess the considerable artillery that will be at his disposal.

And of course, it doesn’t get any better than inheriting a squad that has just won the Barclays Premier League title. Here, we assess the central-midfielders who will be jostling for first-team stardom throughout the highly-anticipated 2013/14 campaign...

Michael Carrick: A seventh season of classy consistency finally earned the underrated star some long overdue credit, earning the Players’ Player of the Year award at Old Trafford whilst taking a place in the PFA’s prestigious Team of the Year. In short, he’s the heartbeat of United.

Tom Cleverley: If Carrick is the master then "TC23" is the apprentice, and one who is rapidly becoming a star for both club and country. A neat and tidy player with an eye for a pass, the youth product is among the breed of diminutive ball-players currently taking the modern game by storm.

Shinji Kagawa: The Japanese international made a mightily encouraging start to life at Old Trafford throughout the 2012/13 season, despite a few niggling injuries. He clocked up 26 appearances and scored six goals, including a sublime hat-trick against Norwich. His intelligence is absolutely unique.

Anderson: Now with four Premier League titles to his name, the Brazilian has become an established star in M16. Although his career has been littered by injuries, his talent is unquestionable.

Importantly, his dynamism and style offers something different to his colleagues.

Darren Fletcher: In his farewell speech, Sir Alex Ferguson wished his fellow Scot a speedy recovery following surgery for a bowel condition. Of course, we all echo those thoughts and hope to see the marauding midfielder back in action – particularly Moyes, who will relish a player of such quality.

Nick Powell: Making it at Old Trafford is never easy, but the former Crewe Alexandra starlet is beginning to make it look easy following a debut campaign stuffed with encouraging cameos. At 19, he’s definitely one for the future, but his development will be fascinating during the coming term.

Asia Visit Excites Vidic

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic is relishing the chance to lead the Reds during the summer visits to Australia and Asia in preparation for the new season.

The Reds will play matches in Bangkok, Sydney, Yokohama, Osaka and Hong Kong as part of Tour 2013 Presented By Aon and Vidic says all the players are looking forward to the trip, especially the Asian leg.

"I’m very excited. We’ve had good experiences in Asia before and I hope we have a good one again," he told ManUtd.com. "We know we have supporters all around the world and we try each year to give them a chance to see a game and meet us. United have done a great job at that over the years.

"The fans in Asia are always very excited to see us and are very passionate about Manchester United. They respect the players and they love the club. Even at Old Trafford you can see so many of them each week – they fly all the way to Manchester to watch the games.

"It’s always been nice for us to see the different countries when we travel to Asia and I’m sure we’ll have another good experience this time."

RvP: 20 Moments And More

With the Barclays Premier League 2013/14 fixtures due for release on Wednesday 19 June, we’ll soon be looking ahead to the new campaign. But in the latest issue of Inside United magazine, on sale this week, Robin van Persie has one last glance back at what was an incredible debut campaign at Old Trafford.

United’s no.20, who scored 30 goals, won his first league winners’ medal and bagged the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award as voted for by the fans, picks out the 20 moments that made his first year in Manchester so special.

On scoring his first Reds hat-trick at Southampton in September, he says: “This was my first experience of United’s famous never-say-die attitude. It was a crazy match but we never gave up. I still think about the penalty I missed. I was so lucky to have a chance to make that mistake right by scoring another two goals.”

Of his stunning volley against Aston Villa in April, supplied by Wayne Rooney’s sumptuous pass, Robin says: “It was instinct. I looked up and thought: ‘This ball is so nice, it’s too beautiful to take a touch’.” And of United's supporters, he enthused: "The whole season the fans have been unbelievable from my very first match at Old Trafford."

But for the smooth-talking Dutchman the best experience is how all these moments came together, resulting in United’s 20th – and his first – league title. “I have to say that winning a trophy is fantastic,” he adds. “It’s great but the road to the trophy is maybe even nicer. Being together every day and working on details, getting better step-by-step, beating opponents and then at the end of all that is the result and the trophy.”

With the new season creeping ever closer, van Persie's final message whets the appetite for what promises to be an enthralling, intriguing campaign under new boss David Moyes. “It’s been an honour and I’m still thrilled about what’s happened in the last 10 months or so,” he concludes. “Hopefully we can do even better, crack on and win even more trophies.”

De Gea Targets World Accolade

David De Gea is determined to become the best goalkeeper in world football – although the Manchester United goalkeeper says he has work to do before earning such a tag.

The 22-year-old was outstanding for much of the 2012/13 season, helping the Reds secure the Barclays Premier League title whilst winning a place in the PFA Team of the Year. He also finished third in the voting for the club's prestigious Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.

To conclude an excellent campaign, De Gea is currently starring for Spain in the European Under-21 Championship in Israel, keeping four clean sheets en route to Tuesday night’s showpiece final against Italy at Jerusalem's Teddy Stadium.

“I have grown a lot,” David told Spanish newspaper AS when quizzed on his development since joining the Reds from Atlético Madrid in 2011. “I am more experienced, I have played a lot of games for United, and I am sure of myself and confident.

“Of course, I am very grateful for the effort they (United) made to buy me and for the support they gave me. First Atlético, then United trusted in me.

“My objective is to be right up there with the best players in the world, that's what makes me excited, and I’m doing everything I can to achieve that.

“I am playing at a very high level. I have had one year playing well but I'm still very young. I think that I still have a way to go before I reach the level of the best in the world.”

As well as his own immeasurable talent, part of De Gea’s personal development must be attributed to United’s coaching staff and former boss Sir Alex Ferguson, who signed him as a replacement for the retired Edwin van der Sar.

Of course, when De Gea returns to Manchester for pre-season training, his recently retired manager will have been replaced by David Moyes. And although it will be different, the Spaniard admits he is looking forward to a new chapter for the Reds.

“It will be very strange because Sir Alex spent 26 years at the same club, but this is football, and all eras must come to an end,” he said. “We are delighted that David Moyes is the new coach as he has the same level of enthusiasm as Sir Alex.

“I am very proud to have had the privilege of working with Sir Alex, it was a real pleasure. He is the best coach of all time and working with him is something I will be able to tell my children and my grandchildren about.

“The best advice that he gave me was to simply give my all. He told me to continue with the same mentality I have always had. I owe a lot of my capabilities as a goalkeeper to him.”

Sir Alex's First Manchester United Team Sheet Being Sold

The official team sheet from Sir Alex Ferguson's first game in charge at Manchester United is to be sold at auction.

Hand-written ahead of a 2-0 defeat to Oxford United on November 8 1986, the historic item is being sold in Devizes, Wiltshire, and is expected to reach between £2,000 and £3,000.

The starting XI was: 1. Chris Turner, 2. Mike Duxbury, 3. Arthur Albiston, 4. Kevin Moran, 5. Paul McGrath, 6. Graeme Hogg, 7. Clayton Blackmore, 8. Remi Moses, 9. Frank Stapleton, 10. Peter Davenport, 11. Peter Barnes. Substitute: Jesper Olsen.

The team sheet is being sold by Henry Aldridge & Son on behalf of an Oxford fan who was given it by former player Peter Rhoades-Brown.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: "The team in November 1986 was a little different to the star-studded affair for Sir Alex's last game in charge that included global stars such as Robin van Persie.

"The first match included names such as Chris Turner in goal, Paul McGrath at centre back and Peter Davenport up front.

"The present owner is a life-long Oxford fan and it was given to him by Peter Rhoades-Brown, an Oxford player, as a souvenir."

The item will go under the hammer on June 22.

Ferdinand Is Targeting 'Something Special' Under David Moyes

Manchester United's Rio Ferdinand wants to win the Premier League title at the first attempt under new boss David Moyes, believing it would be 'something special'.

Ferdinand has won six Premier League crowns since joining the Red Devils in 2002, the latest last season in Sir Alex Ferguson's final campaign in charge.

With former Everton man Moyes now in charge, Ferdinand is targeting a 21st title for the Old Trafford outfit.

He told The Sun: "To win the league under David Moyes would be phenomenal.

"Last season was one of the best when we won title No 20 but this could go beyond that.

"To win it at the first attempt with a new man in charge would be something special."

Ferdinand believes Moyes will be able to build on the solid foundation left by Ferguson.

"Moyes is a real football man and an honest guy," the veteran defender added.

"His hard working ethic reflects the man himself and he obviously wants success. We've got a great chance with this manager.

"Every year when we have the end-of-season party we are thinking about the next season and what we are going to do.

"We always talk about improving on the previous season. That was no different this year just because the manager has changed."

Jose Mourinho's return to Chelsea will make it harder for the Red Devils next season and while 34-year-old Ferdinand is pleased to see him back, he hopes he is not successful.

"As a fan it's good to see personalities like Mourinho coming into our league," he added.

"But, hopefully, he can wait till I've retired before he wins anything at all."

Nani Says Manchester United Exit Is Not Guaranteed

Nani is yet to decide what the summer will hold for him, but insists there is no guarantee that he will leave Manchester United.

The Portugal international is about to enter the final year of his contract at Old Trafford and no extension has been put in place.

It has been suggested that United would be willing to sanction a sale when the transfer window re-opens, while Nani is said to be open to the idea of taking on a new challenge.

He is, however, keeping his cards close to his chest when it comes to speculation regarding his future.

Nani has been linked with a number of clubs in the Premier League and across Europe, but he has refused to rule out the prospect of remaining at United.

He said: "My future? Nothing is certain.

"I am calm. I have everything in my hands.

"I am not saying that I will not continue at Manchester United. I will think about what is best for me."

While remaining coy on what his decision will be, Nani has ruled out a return to his homeland.

The 26-year-old winger added: "I have respect for the Portuguese clubs, especially Sporting Lisbon but also Benfica and Porto, but I don't think that is viable.

"I think my level at the moment is different."

Nani has also conceded that he would like to play alongside international team-mate Joao Moutinho, who is now at Monaco, but admits that he does not know whether such a switch would be possible.

Bebe Expresses Interest In Sporting Lisbon Move

Manchester United striker Bebe has expressed an interest in completing a summer switch to Sporting Lisbon.

The 22-year-old was a shock arrival at Old Trafford in August 2010, with United splashing out over £7million on the untested Portuguese frontman.

He has struggled for game time in England and has spent much of the last two seasons out on loan at Besiktas and Rio Ave.

Bebe is now looking for a permanent move back to his homeland and has welcomed reports suggesting Sporting are keen on acquiring his services.

"I would love to play for Sporting," he told Correio da Manha.

"The club would suit me and it is an ambition of mine to play for Sporting.

"They put faith in young players, appreciate them, and play an attractive game that suits my style. It is a club that can grow. I haven't found that in England."

Bebe believes that 'many' coaching changes have held Sporting back of late, as they 'change direction', but believes the club has 'everything to enjoy a much better future'.

Rafael Hoping To See Manchester United Tastes FA Cup Glory In 2014

Rafael hopes Manchester United can compete on multiple fronts in 2013/14, with the FA Cup considered to be a top target.

The Red Devils are the most successful side in FA Cup history - taking the trophy on 11 occasions - but their last success came back in 2004.

While they have kept a steady stream of silverware coming into Old Trafford over the past decade, they will consider their failure to land English football's grandest cup prize to be an issue in need of addressing.

Rafael hopes their barren run - which has seen them go six years without gracing a final - will come to an end in 2014, with the reigning Premier League champions determined to challenge at home and abroad next season.

The Brazilian full-back told Inside United: "Once we arrive back here for pre-season, the focus will be on winning the league again and also the Champions League, FA Cup and Capital One Cup.

"It's been a long time since we won the FA Cup so we should be really focused to win this trophy again."

Rafael believes United should be well set next term, with a youthful squad now boasting plenty of experience.

He added: "If you see all the players now, we are starting to get mature,

"We were young - me, (Phil) Jones, Chris Smalling, (David) De Gea, (Danny) Welbeck - we were all young. Now we are getting towards the age of 24 or 25 and that's a good age. We need to improve every day."

Following The Greats

Wilf McGuinness took on the unenviable task of replacing Sir Matt Busby as Manchester United manager in 1969 but, as he explains here, he believes David Moyes will fare better than he did when the former Everton boss takes over the reins at Old Trafford on 1 July.

“Manchester United hoisted me to the heavens, not once but twice,” wrote Wilf in his autobiography, Man and Babe. “First they bestowed on me the pure, unadulterated joy of being a young Red Devil on the threshold of a football career alongside the best bunch of lads who ever drew breath; then they did me the supreme honour of choosing me to succeed the incomparable Matt Busby.”

Football readily supplies some of life’s epic highs but it can also kick you in the teeth. Ultimately Wilf’s dreams as a player and manager at Old Trafford were left in tatters. He played in the same youth teams as Bobby Charlton and Duncan Edwards among Matt Busby’s Babes. He turned pro but his career was cut short when he broke his leg in a Reserves match against Stoke in December 1959.

Having pursued a career in coaching, he was named United team manager at the age of 31, succeeding Matt Busby in summer 1969. And yet once again luck eluded him. United were defeated in three two-legged semi-finals – against Manchester City and Aston Villa in consecutive League Cup campaigns and Leeds in the FA Cup – before being dismissed in December 1970. The Reds also lost an FA Cup third/fourth-place play-off.

Yet while the enormity of the job of replacing such a pivotal figure in Manchester United's history mirrors Moyes' task, the circumstances undoubtedly differ in 2013 compared to 1969. “Following someone as great as Matt Busby… I know how David Moyes will feel,” Wilf told United Uncovered, United's new e-newsletter. “But David is a very experienced manager. It was my first managerial role when I followed Matt. I had coaching experience but it is different being a manager.

“David Moyes is an experienced guy and what he needs is the fans to get behind him. Let them cheer like mad. The fans will definitely get behind the manager and the players will be there as well. Knowing what he has done [at Everton] and knowing the man slightly, it’s enough to say: ‘He’s the right sort’. He’ll need good luck. Sir Alex will tell you he had good luck with the last-minute goals. David will get that winning feeling, I’m sure.

"The biggest thing in football, in life if you like, is self-belief, inwardly knowing you’re going to do it. That’s how people like Sir Alex and Sir Matt got on – that inward belief that they’re going to make it – and I feel sure David Moyes will."

Moyes' Boys: Wingers

On 1 July, David Moyes will officially inherit a star-studded squad to mount his assault on the Barclays Premier League during the 2013/14 season.

And the former Everton manager will be spoilt for choice. Here, having analysed his batch of goalkeepers, full-backs and centre-halves, we assess the wingers that will be at his disposal. Click on their names to also view extensive profiles...

Ryan Giggs: Where do you start? The Reds legend is the most decorated British player of all time and tops the appearance charts at Old Trafford. Although he has adopted a central role in recent years, his form on the flank last term proved he’s not yet done with the art of wing wizardry.

Antonio Valencia: Having swept the board at the 2011/12 end-of-season awards, the Ecuadorian was handed the iconic no.7 shirt at United, an honour reserved for a special few. His form dipped a little last term, but a vast improvement at the business end hints at a bright future under Moyes.

Ashley Young: Although injury blighted his 2012/13 season, the former Aston Villa star showed glimpses of his unquestionable talent and, of course, bagged his first title winners’ medal. His pace, trickery and crossing remains a formidable weapon that must be utilised.

Nani: Since joining in 2007, the Portuguese ace has become one of United’s most potent players who can turn a match on its head with a single flick of his right or left boot. With a trick book to rival compatriot and ex-Red Cristiano Ronaldo, he is a man not to be messed with.

Wilfried Zaha: Quite simply, the former Crystal Palace starlet is one of the most exciting prospects in the English game. Although originally signed in January 2013 but loaned back to Palace, he officially joins his team-mates on 1 July and will hope to integrate quickly.

Buttner Nearly Quit Club Over Homesickness

Dutch defender Alex Buttner admits he nearly walked away from Manchester United because he was suffering from homesickness.

The left-back signed for the Old Trafford giants in a £4million deal from Vitesse Arnhem last summer.

But the 24-year-old, who was brought up on a travellers' camp in Holland, struggled to settle into life in Cheshire.

Buttner told The Sun: "I now know about homesickness. I'd think about my family and friends at home many times.

"How they were, what they were doing, little things like that.

"But I did not give up and I have my girlfriend Laura and brother Denny to thank for that.

"They were always there for me in England. I could call on them any time. I needed their warmth.

"I'm a fighter. But had I been on my own, I'd have got on a plane back to Holland a long time ago."

Mourinho Had No Interest In Manchester United Job

Jose Mourinho says he had known for months that Sir Alex Ferguson would be retiring but he had never been tempted to replace the Scot at Manchester United as he wanted to return to Chelsea.

The Portuguese coach, 50, agreed a four-year deal to take over once again at Stamford Bridge after he left Real Madrid at the end of the season.

There had been suggestions Mourinho, a Champions League winner with Inter Milan after leaving England almost six years ago, was in the frame for the United post when Ferguson stepped down.

He was also linked with Manchester City after Roberto Mancini's dismissal, but maintains there was only ever going to be one destination for him this summer and he told Ferguson he hopes to return to Chelsea.

He said: "I knew that Ferguson was retiring many months ago, and I am so happy with his trust because it was big news for the world - I can imagine that just a very small circle around him knew that, and it was a big responsibility for me to know that.

"Why do I know that? Because we are friends, so if I am his friend to know that he is going to retire, he is also my friend to know that the club I want to coach in England is Chelsea. Of course I told him I want to come to Chelsea."

Mourinho added: "I would have turned down every job in the world, the Manchester United job, everyone, for Chelsea I would turn down every job in the world."

Sheringham's Respect For Giggs

Teddy Sheringham has admitted he would not be surprised if Ryan Giggs takes his record for the oldest outfield player in Barclays Premier League history.

The ex-United striker was still turning out for West Ham in his 40s and played on for seven years after enjoying a key role in the Reds' Treble-winning success of 1999.

Giggs will be unable to usurp his former team-mate until the 2014/15 season and currently has only agreed a contract extension to take him to the end of the 2013/14 term. But his form and fitness both looked top-notch during United's 20th title-winning campaign.

"I hold the record for an outfield player," Sheringham told ManUtd.com, "but Giggsy has still got a couple of years left in him.

"I think he would have to play another season on top of next year [to beat my record]. You have to be that build – I didn't carry a lot of fat when I was playing and he definitely doesn't. He's kept himself in good shape."

The improvement in sports science has been credited for helping today's stars perform at the highest level for longer but Sheringham pinned his faith in his own knowledge of his body – something that clearly stood him in good stead.

"Sports science had come in for about five or six years when I was still playing," he stated. "But I didn't pay too much attention when I was involved. I got through 20 years of my career so there was no way I was going to start listening to sports science and people telling me certain things I could and couldn't do.

"It just didn't go down well with me as I had my routine and regime and that was it. You get to know your own body as you get older. It was only when you're younger that you get very frustrated but you learn to realise what's going on when you're older."

Sheringham believes the elder statesmen in the squad, including recently-retired Paul Scholes who has been tipped to stay on as a coach, can continue to inspire the younger players.

"Without a doubt, they are the ones that lead by example and show the youngsters how it is done," he added. "People are still looking up to the likes of Giggsy, Scholesy and Rio [Ferdinand] from the next generation."

Premier League's oldest outfield players

Teddy Sheringham - 40yrs 272 days

Gordon Strachan - 40yrs 83 days

Bryan Robson - 39yrs 355 days

Dean Windass - 39yrs 269 days

Ray Wilkins - 39yrs 233 days

Moyes' Boys: Centre-backs

David Moyes will inherit a squad of champions when he officially takes charge at Manchester United on 1 July.

Here, having already assessed the various goalkeepers and full-backs at his disposal, we study the selection of centre-halves all vying for first team selection this coming season. You can also read each player’s extensive profile by clicking on their name...

Nemanja Vidic: A fearless leader of men with an appetite for graft, the Serbian powerhouse is everything a club captain should be. Although injuries hampered part of his last campaign, his form towards the climax was outstanding and his future looks more than healthy.

Rio Ferdinand: Mature, experienced and classy, the veteran has just enjoyed a masterful year in Red, exporting his unique brand of intelligent, thoughtful defending to the masses. Having just signed a new one-year contract, he looks set for yet another fine season at Old Trafford.

Jonny Evans: Arguably the most-improved player of 2012/13, the recently-married Irishman has grown into a fully fledged first team star in M16 and looks set to challenge Vida and Rio for starting supremacy next season. Not content with defending, he’s even added goals to his game.

Phil Jones: Sir Alex Ferguson believes he could be “one of United’s greatest ever players”, which is high praise indeed considering the luminaries that have preceded him. Of course, his value has already been noted since joining the club, in various positions, and his potential is immeasurable.

Chris Smalling: Widely regarded as the heir to Ferdinand’s throne, the former Maidstone and Fulham man is one of England’s most exciting prospects. Mixing composure and control, his defensive style would complement those adopted by Messrs Vidic, Evans and Jones.

Michael Keane: Following a handful of first team cameos last season, the hugely talented youngster enjoyed a successful loan spell with Championship club Leicester City – earning a nomination for their Player of the Year award. His development will be fascinating this coming season.

Scott Wootton: Similarly to Keane, this powerful defender made positive strides last term and clocked up four appearances for Sir Alex’s men, including two in the UEFA Champions League. Injury hampered a loan spell at Peterborough, yet his talent remains unquestioned and he’s a prospect for the future.

Moyes' Boys: Full-backs

David Moyes has a powerful squad at his disposal when he officially replaces Sir Alex Ferguson on 1 July.

We are running the rule over the new United boss' options in each position and take a look at the full-backs vying for first-team spots. Click on the player's name for their full profile.

FULL-BACKS

Alex Büttner: Signed as cover for Patrice Evra, the tenacious Dutchman showed glimpses of great potential in his first campaign and even scored both on his debut and in the last game of Sir Alex Ferguson's reign.

Patrice Evra: Just when we thought we knew what we'll get from our left-back - top-drawer defending, amazing consistency, incredible fitness levels plus fortitude and focus - the Frenchman surprised everybody by netting a few goals as well last term.

Fabio: Spent the entire season on loan at QPR and was unfortunately unable to prevent Harry Redknapp's side from sliding into the Championship. United's right-back in the 2011 Champions League final will have learned plenty from the experience and makes a welcome return to the fold.

Rafael: The buccaneering Brazilian had his best campaign to date in a United shirt, making the right-back spot almost exclusively his property and catching the eye at both ends of the pitch - notching spectacular strikes against Liverpool and Queens Park Rangers.

Guillermo Varela: Snapped up from Penarol, the combative South American is on a steep learning curve but has already impressed during a trial spell spent training exclusively with the first-team group. Signed a five-year contract before heading out to Turkey for the Under-20 World Cup finals.

Marnick Vermijl: Ultra-consistent for Warren Joyce's second-string side, his goal sparked the superb comeback in the final of the Barclays Under-21 Premier League. Made his first-team debut in 2012/2013 and will be looking to push on further next term.

The Lowdown On Varela

Guillermo Varela has now completed his move from Penarol to United for an undisclosed fee.

Here, ManUtd.com runs the rule over the Reds' first signing of the summer after he penned a five-year deal...

What sort of a player is he?
He's a quick, aggressive right-back who has a real willingness to defend. In that respect, he's not a typical South American defender in terms of wanting to be a forward player and joining in attacks as a winger.

What are his strengths?
As well as his desire to defend, he is a composed individual and nothing seems to faze him. Overall, he's a no-nonsense defender who reads the game well and uses his intelligence.

What can he improve on?
His pace allows him to get forward to join attacks quickly but his attacking work is probably the area he will aim to develop most at United.

Why has he not been playing regularly for Penarol?
Penarol manager Jorge Da Silva arrived in February 2012 and brought in a number of players to his squad. This limited Varela’s first-team opportunities.

When did he catch United's eye?
Playing in the Under-20 World Cup qualifiers for Uruguay in Argentina. He was playing with team-mates he was not familiar with and yet still displayed a good understanding of the game. Despite a tough schedule in very hot temperatures, his stamina and strength shone through while other players wilted.

How did his trial period at Carrington pan out?
He was with the first team for 10 days or so at the end of the season. It was a unique trial in many ways because he trained with the first team during his entire spell. Obviously, if you're not up to that level, you get exposed quickly in the first-team group but his performances are believed to have impressed Sir Alex and the rest of the players.

Which former United player is he most like?
Although he is not as big physically yet, there is a little bit of Gabriel Heinze's style about him in terms of his approach to the game. If he does as well as the Argentinian, everybody will be delighted.
Will he be able to settle in a new country?
There is already a group of young Spanish-speakers at Old Trafford – the likes of David De Gea, Javier Hernandez and Angelo Henriquez – who can help him with the language and adapting to life in Manchester. Hernandez was a big help on the training pitch during his trial period, passing on the coaching instructions.
So, what's next?
The Under-20 World Cup in Turkey (21 June to 13 July). It will be another challenge for him and United have a good presence at the tournament (Henriquez with Chile; Tom Thorpe, Sam Johnstone and Larnell Cole with England). Brazil and Argentina did not qualify, which was a surprise, but it gives other teams and players a chance to impress and the Reds will be keeping a close eye on events.

Galatasaray: Manchester United Set Nani Valuation

Galatasaray have failed in a bid for Nani because Manchester United want £8.5million for the winger, according to the Turkish club.

The Portugal international has never really fulfilled his potential at Old Trafford and new boss David Moyes is thought to be ready to sell this summer.

Galatasaray are among the clubs who are interested in signing Nani, who has just one year left on his contract, but claim they cannot meet United's valuation.

The Turkish club's chairman, Unal Aysal, said: "We offered €7million (£6m) for him. But they didn't accept. We can't give more than this.

"We are not going to follow Nani anymore. We can't give more than €7m for him.

"They want €10million (£8.5million). Because of this he is not on our transfer list anymore."

Kagawa Has Big Hopes For Next Season

Shinji Kagawa has set his sights on becoming as influential as his Manchester United team-mates Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney.

The 24-year-old found life in the Premier League tough at times after joining United from Borussia Dortmund last summer, but an improvement in form since the turn of the year has given renewed hope to the midfielder.

His confidence is an area Kagawa wants to work on if he is to be as good as his illustrious team-mates, and the Japan international hopes to build on this at the Confederations Cup, which starts this Saturday.

"I wasn't satisfied with my overall performance but I played well in the second half of the season and started to get more and more confidence," he told Sports Illustrated.

"Hopefully, I can keep that going at the Confederations Cup.

"In this business, you need to be like Rooney or Van Persie and prove yourself if you want the ball.

"I want to be a player like them, which means I need results."

Nine Reds To Be Released

The Premier League’s list of released players, published on Friday, features the retiring Paul Scholes and eight Manchester United youngsters.

Scholes, who played his last match for the club on 19 May, is on the list of players formally being released on 1 July.

Michele Fornasier is the most active member of United's Under-21s to be on the list after forming a solid central defensive partnership with Tom Thorpe for much of the 2012/13 campaign. Frederic Veseli, a free transfer arrival from Manchester City, is also seeking a new club after injury ended his season prematurely.

Reece Brown has been released after finishing the term on loan at Ipswich Town while midfielder Luke Giverin spent most of the season at Royal Antwerp.

Luke Hendrie, John Cofie, Luke McCullough and Gyliano van Velzen are also available after finding it difficult to claim a place in the Reds' successful Under-21 team.

Van der Gouw Rates Büttner

Former keeper Raimond van der Gouw believes Alex Büttner can be satisfied with his first season at Manchester United.

Van der Gouw, who played in the Red Heart United Legends match against Real Madrid recently, is currently goalkeeping coach at Vitesse Arnhem.

Büttner left Vitesse in the summer to join the Reds and played 13 games in all, starting all but one of those matches, and scored a couple of goals for good measure.

"I don't get to see United as much as I want to because I'm too busy with the job at my club in Holland," van der Gouw told ManUtd.com. "But I think Alex can be pleased.

"He did really well. I think he wants to play a few more minutes of course but it depends on how it goes for next season. I read an article from him and he said he had a chat with Patrice Evra and [he'd said] that Alex should be very happy with the minutes he's played now as it was a massive step from where he was coming from."

Vitesse enjoyed a fine campaign in Büttner's absence and are competing for a place in next season's Europa League.

"We had a very good season," explained van der Gouw. "We finished fourth in the league and, next season, will play in Europe - we just have to play a few qualification games. So it was really good."

Community Shield Details Confirmed

Manchester United will take on Wigan Athletic at Wembley in this year's Community Shield, the Football Association has confirmed.

Last season's curtain-raiser, won by Manchester City, was moved to Villa Park due to the London Olympics.

But this summer's clash between Premier League champions United and FA Cup winners Wigan is back at its traditional home with a 2pm kick-off on Sunday, 11 August.

The fixture will see David Moyes take charge of his first competitive match as United boss, while Roberto Martinez's as yet unnamed successor will lead the relegated Latics for the first time.

"You have to go all the way back to 1985 for the last time that Manchester United played in this fixture without Sir Alex Ferguson on the touchline so the eyes of the world will be on the Community Shield and Wembley when David Moyes leads them out in August," said the FA's general secretary, Alex Horne.

"Wigan Athletic provided a fairytale ending to this season's FA Cup Final, which was fitting in our 150th anniversary year, and it will be great to welcome them back to Wembley as they take on the double challenge of Europa League football and the Championship."

United have been allocated 35,000 tickets - priced between £20 and £45 -while Wigan have been given 15,000.

"Manchester United travel in great numbers while Wigan Athletic's allocation is based on the attendances across their two visits to Wembley in The FA Cup last season," Horne added.

"The 2pm kick-off time has been agreed by all the relevant authorities and means that both sets of supporters can travel back to the North West."

Manchester United Appoint David Sternberg As Head Of Media

Manchester United have appointed a new head of media as they attempt to bolster their global social networking presence.

David Sternberg, a former Fox and Universal Sports executive, has already started in his new role to oversee the club's MUTV channel, as well as websites, mobile, social and print media.

Phil Townsend will continue in his position as United's communications director.

United have a hugely-popular Facebook page but not yet a Twitter account, though the club's handling of Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement as manager hinted at an increased commitment to social media.

The official news release carried the Twitter hashtag 'thankyousiralex' and Ferguson's decision to retire led to 1.4m mentions on the site in a single hour.

Moyes' Boys: Goalkeepers

David Moyes takes over as Manchester United manager on 1 July and inherits a powerful squad with plenty of cover in all positions.

As the Reds begin preparing for the defence of the Barclays Premier League title, we are taking a close look at the players currently at the new boss' disposal.

Beginning with the goalkeepers, we will review the senior squad on a player-by-player basis and you can read a full, updated profile on each individual simply by clicking on their name.

GOALKEEPERS

David De Gea: Most United fans recognised long ago his tremendous ability (never mind limitless potential) and, last season, the rest of the league caught up and the Spaniard received the praise of the pundits and a place in the PFA Team of the Year.

Anders Lindegaard: Still steadfastly set on becoming no.1, he had to play second fiddle with De Gea in such great form. It's easy to underestimate the security he provided and the Dane was rewarded with a return to the side towards the end of the season, including having the honour of being the last-ever keeper selected by Sir Alex.

Ben Amos: Learned plenty from spending the first half of the season at Hull City, with Steve Bruce's Tigers eventually securing an automatic promotion spot. Returned to be a key figure in a water-tight defence for Warren Joyce's side and lifted the Barclays Under-21 Premier League trophy as an over-aged player.

Sam Johnstone: After helping the U-21s on their way to nationwide success, the England U-20 goalkeeper was farmed out to Walsall in order to gain invaluable experience. A string of fine displays enhanced his growing reputation as the Saddlers were unlucky to miss out on the play-offs.

Robin Ready For New Era

Robin van Persie insists United's players must relish the dawn of a new age at Old Trafford.

David Moyes replaces Sir Alex Ferguson in the Reds' first managerial change in more than a quarter of a century, and van Persie sees the switch as cause for excitement rather than trepidation.

“It will be a new era and I am looking forward to it," Robin told MUTV. "It is part of our job as well. We have to deal with the new situation and how it is.

"First we can enjoy last year a little. We have a summer break which we should all take and enjoy. And then, slowly, after a couple of weeks, we will start to think about next season and, of course, we are looking forward to next season."

Despite the change of manager and members of United's backroom staff, van Persie is adamant expectations will remain undiluted, with the retention of the Barclays Premier League title top of the Reds' agenda for 2013/14.

"It is going to be a new era and a new challenge, with a new manager, maybe some new players coming," he said. "[Wilfried] Zaha is coming in from Crystal Palace, maybe some more. Maybe some will leave, nobody knows.

"But it is going to be a new challenge and everybody knows what our standards are: we want to win the league again and then hopefully add one or two trophies to that."

Zaha Buy Upholds Traditions

The signing of Wilfried Zaha upholds United's tradition of maintaining a strong English presence within the playing squad, according to David Gill.

The Reds' outgoing chief executive wrapped up a deal for the tricky winger in the final transfer of his time in office, and sees the deal as exciting business for the Barclays Premier League champions.

“It’s quite interesting that for England recently we had five players in the team, which is good for us," says Gill, in the club's official new book Champions 20|13.

"The backbone of Manchester United has always been this way. Matt Busby had it and Alex [Ferguson] has nurtured it himself – this mix between British or English players and foreigners – and that’s what this club is about.

"It’s going to be a big learning curve for him [Zaha], he knows that. But I think he’s going to be an exciting Manchester United player; that’s our view. He’s something different. He can beat a man, he can play in the middle or wide. It’s great for us."

Zaha was immediately loaned back to Palace after completing his January transfer to Old Trafford and helped the Eagles to secure promotion back to the Barclays Premier League via the Championship play-offs.

“Seeing where our squad was at, it wasn’t appropriate to bring him in back in January," said Gill. "It was better for him to continue playing with Palace before joining us in the summer. So we did a deal and that was a precondition, really. We were very happy when we spoke to the hairman of Palace that it was only to be done on that basis.

“He’s a player we knew and Alex had been following. We’d seen him and we were scouting him a lot in the Championship – a lot of teams were – and we just felt that because of his age, his potential and what he can bring to Manchester United it was the right thing to do – even if he’s still quite raw in a lot of respects, as a young man."
